Hey Tim - nice tutorial. I have nearly this exact setup here, except I have the original Studio 1824 (not USB-c). Absolutely use this all the time. It means that I can record all of my Pearl Mimic Pro channels to their own tracks and still leave everything connected all the time. So I have mine set to Kick, Snare, Stereo Toms, Stereo Overheads, Stereo Rooms, and then I'm also using two of the 1824 inputs for Hit-hat and Ride to have more control over them - and I still have an open stereo pair input. Then on the 1824 I still have room for my main mic, my guitar/bass, and a stereo pair for the system sound card so I can easily reference songs, listen to everything in the same monitors, and play my mixes back through the same monitor setup after mix, master, and export. It might seem like overkill to have all of this for a one-person setup, but it is SO convenient and a great workflow enhancement to not have to constantly change out cables, etc which interrupts the creative process. It's also great to use the Presonus hardware in Studio One because you can control the mute and Phantom from within the DAW. My sound cards are about three feet to the side of me and not immediately addressable, but nicely out of the way in a little self-made rack and being able to control the hardware from inside the DAW is awesome. Sorry for the long info!

One question, you'll save my life. If I want to get a different sound from the line outputs of the pre AMP, different from the one coming from the inputs, is that possible? For example, sending the click from my DAW to come out of the line outputs of the pre amp, is that possible?
@TimTalksAudio5 ай бұрын
You wouldn't feed an output of the DAW into the pre-amp (unless you are looking to add some of the sonic characteristics of the pre into your mix). Use a different analog output from your interface to create a send of whatever tracks you want. External pre-amps are ONLY pre amps, they are not interfaces that you could route a different source in/out of. I hope this helps! Nice Tutorial .... starting where you left off in this video, how many I/O can you have total?
@TimTalksAudio2 жыл бұрын
Depending on a number of different factors, a lot. A single ADAT interface expansion can add up to 8 channels of additional I/O up to 48khz sample rates (halved for every doubling of sample rate). Some interfaces allow multiple ADAT connections allowing 16 channels of additional I/O, plus what ever is built into the interface itself! Some mixers are also interfaces and allow for even more expansion!

Hey Tim, I have essentially the same set up. I have a focusrite claret+8 pre and the same Behringer ada8200, however I also have the behringer powerplay p16i system. Any thoughts on how I’d go about setting this up considering both ADAT ins and outs are all being used?
@TimTalksAudio6 ай бұрын
First thoughts are that you'll have to go analog with the inputs to the powerplay. My other thoughts are if there are multiple adat connections you could ustilize those, but with the gear you listed, that may not be available to you.

@themikeymaulerproject5274 жыл бұрын
Great video Tim! A lot of information I've been looking at recommends the external pre system be the clocking master.... In this case, what are the pros/cons of making the Behringer unit the master?
@TimTalksAudio4 жыл бұрын
I would look at the quality of the clocks. With something like the behringer, it’s only 8 I/O plus an onboard clock. I would imagine to keep costs down, the clock works, but might be on the “inexpensive” side to keep production costs down. With the 1824c, sure it’s doing more things at the same time (pres, interface, clock, etc etc) but with the higher price point, one would think they invested into the internals a little more, trying to get the most return for investment.

Hello Tom, Thank you for making this video. Wondering if you have like 2 interfaces and you connect them with adat. Do you need to plug them both in with separate usb plug or can you run them both with one usb connection and merge them together as one unit?
@TimTalksAudio3 жыл бұрын
If they are similar to the units in this video, or are two units that both have USB, you only need to hook up one via USB (the one you'll set as "master"). The ADAT connections from first to second will transfer the audio to/from each unit, and the "main" will do the send to the computer. Hope this helps!

I put the ADA8200 switch on master ( 44.1 kHz )and set the PreSonus to sample rate ( 44.1kHz ) and Clock Source Internal- Sync 44.1kHz and it works. @TimTalksAudio4 жыл бұрын
@@FairweatherBlues-Band71322 So that's where the clocking issue is, clocking only sends on the output cable. Since you only have the out of the ADA8200 going into the 1824, you'll need to set the ADA as master and the 1824 as slave. The 1824 will see the clocking from the ADA on the ADAT in to the 1824.

@TimTalksAudio4 жыл бұрын
@@FairweatherBlues-Band71322 you'll need a second ADAT cable to go out of the 1824 into the ada8200. Clock needs to send on the output. Once you have the second TOSLink cable in, the 1824 can be master clock. The other option would be to use a BNC cable to send Wordclock from the 1824 into the ADA8200

Can any body help me on this ? So this year I am Also will invest on Mastering Grade Gears such as SSL Fusion or Thinking to Get Summing mixer. i know Lyra 2 isn't good choice for outboard gears But what about Using ADAT expansion because my Focusrite has one too Also both has worldclock . so if i EXpand my Lyra 2 ( master ) with focusrite ( Slave ) & connectiong outboard gears with my focusrite ? & keep my monitor speakers connected with the Lyra 2 to hear from Great DAs of Lyra . is it good choice ? i hope it will Bypass The CHeap AD/DA of focusrite and i only utilize the quality AD/DAs of Prism Lyra , Or i am going to hurt the quality of Lyra with such setup , sorry if this setup sounds stupid , actually just stepping in Analogue . i don't want to spend more on titan , becuase i want to buy outboard gear as well with it. ( also please don't suggest me get room treatment and great Pair Of Monitors first before going analogue , i have good room and good monitors , if i want to use analogue i just want to,thats how i will learn. lol

I tried to hook up my old TC konnekt 48 to the 1824c but no luck. If I use the K48 as the clocksource I get adat - no link on the 1824. If I set the 1824c as clocksource the K48 syncs but I get no incoming audio on the 1824c. Guess I have to buy an 8200 :)
@TimTalksAudio2 ай бұрын
Sounds like possibly two things. When you have the TC as clock, you'll need to set your 1824 to look to external clock. That should be accessible via universal control. For your other setup, are you using the correct ports on the TC? looking at the unit, the bottom two TOSLink Connectors are paired and the top two are a different pair (used when running at higher sample rates). Follow your cable paths and ensure out of one goes into the other, and then doubled back again to ensure send and recieve on both sides. If you still need help, reach out to me via email on my site www.timflanzbaum.com or discord discord.gg/S84G4ejBcj

Is a word clock sync cable necessary? Also, why run an out optical from the 1824c to the ADAT8200?
@TimTalksAudio2 жыл бұрын
For sync, no you do not need to run a separate cable. The ToS Link or optical cables will carry the sync if you are only clocking two units together. If you are clocking more gear, then you would need a sync cable. And I run cables in both directions to send audio in both directions, effectively doubling my ins and outs!

Is it possible to add another ADAT interface and expand further to 24 ch.'s?
@TimTalksAudio3 жыл бұрын
That depends on your main interface and if it has a second ADAT bank. If it does, then yes. If not, no. Light pipe/toslink/adat can only send and receive a max of 8 channels at 44.1 and 48k sample rates.

Hi Tim, My situation is that I currently have Presonus Quantum 2 as my audio interface. This one has 4 mono outputs (2 stereo pairs). Soon a project coming up, I need to be able to output more to create cue mixes for an acoustic band recording. For the input, i already got how to get it working. I am abit unclear on the output. So lets say i will connect Ada8200 to my Quantum 2 (it will be the master) by ADAT, using 2 cables so that both Adat In & Out will be connected. And then will the Quantum 2 show up i know have total 12 analog outputs (4 + 8 from Ada8200). And then in my DAW (Studio One), i can choose which track to send seperately to which output from the 12 outputs i have? Will it work like that? Or should the Ada 16 be the master, then the Quantum 2 be the slave? All i need is the ability to send each audio track to each analog output, and i need atleast 12 mono analog outputs like this. Now i tried this with my Quantum 2, and I can send seperate audio track to seperate output within its 4 outputs. So in this case how should i go about it? Asking before buying Ada8200. Thanks alot

Hey Tim, I've got a Scarlett 18i20 3rd Gen (newest one) and a UA 4 channel 710d. The latter is obviously the beauty of the two but I'm not sure which to set as the clock and also what to switch the sample rate switch to on the 710d. Any way to figure out which one has the better quality onboard clock without just 'guessing' based on the price tags? I heard some folks say source the clock on the one that is connecting directly to my DAW (which would be the Scarlett). Looking forward to hearing your and anyone else's thoughts! Cheers for the great video for getting me this far mate.
