Peace Sells is very much not representative of 80s Megadeth. It was a single for radio. Nothing else on the album sounds remotely like that.

Here's a bunch of stuff regarding Megadeth that's good to know. Mustaine was kicked out of Metallica on their way to record KEA, and started Megadeth as (essentially) a revenge band. He eventually forgave James and Lars around '97 realizing that he was also massively successful and trying to out do them was pointless Dave wrote a lot of material for KEA and a bit for RTL and supposedly MOP. Mechanix (the four horsemen) was orignially Dave's song that they slowed and edited for KEA (look up the no life till leather demo version) In 2002 Dave sustained an arm injury in which he damaged his nerves in his hand and had to completely re-learn guitar. which is why he had so much time for the remixes when The system has failed (2004) was recorded, dave mustain and david ellefson were the only members in the band, so they had a bunch of studio musicians come in to record sections of that album. They have released 1 album since surviving throat cancer (the sick, the dying, and the dead, 2022) Mustain wrote Crush Em in hopes it would be played for a wwe theme, as he was a big fan of the sport Peace Sells is not representative of their first 3 albums, it was a single for mtv (although a very good one) On your own time, you should watch the video for sweating bullets, It enhances the song so much. if you do a part two, I would recommend listening to these songs; Last Rites/ Loved to Deth (Killing is my business... and business is good - the final kill) (the final kill remaster is objectively the best) Tornado of Souls (Rust in peace) A tout le monde (Youthanasia) Blackmail the universe (the system has failed) Washington is next (United abominations) Sudden Death (Th1rt3en) We'll be back (the sick the dying and the dead) As a separate Video it would be interesting to see you do a comparison to Mechanix and The Four Horsemen Also the Wake up Dead cover with Lamb Of God is really good

That's a great list that doesn't parrot back all the same songs most people suggest. Good job. I'll suggest a few of my own. Reckoning Day (Youthanasia) Back in the Day (The System Has Failed) Night Stalkers (The Sick, The Dying,...And The Dead) Poisonous Shadows (Dystopia)

Hello, long read ahead, so bear with me: 1) I have purposely neglected Megadeth's material because I am a Metallica fan but damn every now and then I come across hidden gems that make me enjoy much more of what they are and respect them even further. Crush 'Em is such a fun tune Patrick, thank you for enlightening us with that. 2) Now some context for what happened in 2004. I don't know if this is related but the context is necessary. Dave back in 2002 had many health complications, such as a nerve injury in his left arm after he fell asleep on a chair and it caused pressure on its arm, causing to it to be paralyzed and Dave wasn't even able to make a fist after the injury. He did have to go to therapy in order to reteach his arm how to play guitar. It seems a little bit of a stretch, but that's a summary of what happened. Megadeth was disbanded for some time, and then Dave decided that he wanted to work on remastering and remixing all existing Megadeth released up to that point. Maybe those years without touring or writing made him think that this was necessary up to some extent. 3) Many songs from Metallica's debut and second album have riffs that came from Dave: The Four Horsemen, Jump In The Fire, Phantom Lord, Metal Militia - Ride The Lightning, The Call of Ktulu. But Dave likes to say that he wrote many other riffs that remained uncredited. -----Apple Music has all of the original mixes of Megadeth releases, but me living outside of the USA, I have a ease of access for me to get all versions, remasters, remixes and stuff similar to that of any band----- 4) We are sorry that Peace Sells left you a little disappointed to what Megadeth was and is at the beginning; Thrash and Speed Metal. Also Dave liked to touch occult and gnarly topics such as Wake Up Dead, The Conjuring and Good Mourning... Black Friday. These are the songs that you should give it a listen in your spare time and it will leave a better impression. Or maybe a quick snippet could be Rattlehead from their original album. 5) Holy Wars is much better on the 2004 remaster, at least on the bass and drum mixes. But also, Hangar 18 sounds much better in my opinion with the dynamics of the drum. It is a shame that you skipped the solo because on the 2004 remaster they got rid of the solo panning in the original Holy Wars song. All right. I will stop yapping; it is always a joy to see these kinds of long videos with Chris and Chris. We understand that is hard to get them together to record, and you look to be doing nice with your treatment Patrick! Hopefully soon there is going to be a format for all to be involved and me more videos together!

Thanks for diving in. My thoughts on your thoughts. First, you definitely got a VERY limited exposure, and yes, several of the picks did not represent their albums. Second, the voice lol. Dave’s voice is very much an acquired taste, and even then it’s hit or miss. I went from struggling to get into them to them being my favorite band. Third, the sound production. They’ve actually changed a good bit in that area, but it’s less a total reinvention and more a gradual shift. It’s more apparent when you listen to the albums in order. The “parody/caricature” thing. Again his voice is weird and it’s true he couldn’t find another singer. That aside, it’s over the top. It’s theatrical at times. It’s corny at times. It’s over the top but mostly it’s FUN. Not all metal has to be devoid of fun lol. Watch the music video for Sweating Bullets sometime. It’s clearly comedic and they’re having a blast. I’d really be curious to see how you guys react to the original mix of their 1997 album Cryptic Writings. It was well within their peak commercial era but before they went too far on that direction with Risk. It’s in my opinion by FAR their best mix of radio friendly structure and presentation with heavy credibility. It’s a good radio hard rock album with pristine production. Dave worked with some Nashville producers to purposely go for that sound. Really would like to hear your take. For songs from it, Trust, Almost Honest and She Wolf are great. Finally…. Cannot believe you house slagged Holy Wars lol. And you claim to like metal. Jk. Mostly. This man’s voice is definitely an acquired taste but they’re so good once you’re there. For Anthrax, the Among the Living album is generally their Master of Puppets/Peace Sells/Reign in Blood Thanks guys! Also Patrick much better on the talking this time! 🎉

I forgot! Dystopia the Sony is a carbon copy of Hangar 18 from Rust in Peace. They’re playing different stuff but it’s basically a one for one we make of the structure. And I get especially as current audio engineers that you would appreciate the more modern production, but I personally hate the artificial drum thing, the excessive compression and how everything is engineered to sound exactly the same these days. I would happily give up a little oomph in the sampled snare to get a more organic drum and more headroom and more blend and to just sound like an actual band. I don’t need every album to sound like every other. That’s just me.

While there has been many members in Megadeth their departures aren’t all without reason Chris was fired for pawning the band’s equipment to buy drugs I think Gar did the same and was also unreliable towards the end of his time in the band. Chuck the drummer on SFSGSW was the drum tech and became gars replacement later being fired for being unreliable. Jeff young replaced Chris but Jeff was fired because Dave suspected him of having an affair with his then fiancé. Then Marty and Nick joined and that was the lineup for about ten years with Marty quitting the band in 99/2000 I believe. Many of the Changing of members has happened in more recent years.

But since we focus on technical things here, I feel like it's more important to talk about the music in real time so that you can hear an example of what we're talking about in that exact moment. If we were talking about the message of a song or just impressions of a song overall, then we could definitely talk about it after we were done listening to it, but since we're talking about technical things it just makes more sense to me!

At no point would I have expected Patrick to really get into Megadeth (I'm only part way through, maybe he likes the newer stuff), but his take on Mauro Renallo is way off. Mauro is an excellent announcer.

Maybe one day you guys can review the Metallica “And Justice for All” with Loud Bass and there’s a dude on KZbin that switched up some stuff and remastered “St. Anger” in a different key and it sounds awesome. Love the channel too btw. Thankyou. 😊

IMO that papery, attackless snare on Rust In Peace makes the whole album sound like a demo. Which is puzzling to me because Guns N Roses got these massive sounding drums with the same guy (Mike Clink). I'm not sure if the sample they used for replacing the snare in the remix was the best choice but it does sound way better.

Holy Wars.. The Punishment Due is my favorite album opener of all time! And Countdown to Extinction was their critically accaimed that made them world famous "Black Album" those songs were all over MTV when I was growing up! Rust in Peace was their And Justice.. I've watched all of your Metallica videos but the video that stands out to me the most is when you listened to Spiritbox The Fear of Fear because I had no idea that even came out and never much got into them other than a few listens but something hit me about that EP, I instantly fell in love with it! So much so that I literally went on Amazon and ordered the vinyl immediately and also Eternal Blue and then just recently even paid $110 for a collectors edition of Constance on vinyl because that song is pure brilliance and has literally pierced my soul.. Ever since your video, I think I've listened to Spiritbox every single day! Had pretty much the roughest start of any year in my entire life and their music got me through those dark days and I honestly don't even think I'd be around anymore if their music wasn't in my life and I have to give you credit for that too. There are a ton of their videos on here and every song is also here and they are all amazing! Just wanted to express my gratitude for reintroducing that spectacular band into my life, they made me feel things I never thought I'd ever feel again are now my favorite band of all time! 💗

I LOVE the production of the original Peace Sells album. It was the best Megadeth ever sounded on tape in my opinion. And the rawness is such a cool thing. I love recordings where you can hear those little thigs like pedal switches and fingers sliding on the strings.

Peace Sells and Rust in Peace full albums are kind of necessary to understand the various edges of the Megadeth sound. Countdown has tracks, KIMB and SFSGSW have tracks, Youthanasia has some great tracks, but the two "Peace" albums are critical. Anthrax-wise, if you just do Among the Living you'll get enough of the taste overall. Maybe include I'm the Man for comedy. Slayer, Hell Awaits all the way through Seasons are important to hear the differences in their sounds. But if you just have to pick two do Reign and Seasons.

I really like Risk and The World Needs A Hero, but I will agree that I am a rare breed among Megadeth fans. I think the general consensus among more open minded fans is that the albums aren't that bad and they certainly don't reach the low of St. Anger.

I’ve been watching this channel for a while now and have a bad tendency to watch your videos from front to back 😂. Anyway as someone who has probably seen like 50 hours of you guys listening to music and talking I have some thoughts. I would love to see you do a ‘audio engineers listen to thrash metal’ video, and listen to a compilation of thrash bands and see how the production was differnt between bands, and globally, because the way things were produced seems to differ with both age and location it seems. I would reccomend Slayer, Sodom, anthrax, testament, perhaps a more modern band as well like Municipal waste, it would be interesting to see how these bands vary both musically and in terms of production, and how time and location of the bands links to that too. For example Sodoms early stuff, despite being late 80s, sounds like stuff from the early 80s, and this seems true for a lot of german stuff. Additionally if you ever want more hands to listen to, I would say do Tool with caution. Tool fans are psychopathically obsessive, if you thought Zeppelin fans were bad, you know nothing. They only have five albums, so I would start with their first one if it were me, however if you only wish to do one video on tool, do lateralus. But yes you will be ripped apart for talking over it, being negative, so be prepared for that backlash. I also think you should Definelty listen to Death, whose last two albums are absolutely stellar front to back, and Gojira and mastodon. To me Gojira don’t have amazing albums front to back, but they have a lot of amazing songs across their discography. Mastodon I would say the same for, but mastodon are great as well. Both Gojira and mastodon came out within the last 25 years or so and have roots in death metal, but mastodon certainly and Gojira to a lesser extent have moved away from that genre to prog if anything. Furthermore, you absolutely need to give the band camel a listen, if it’s not on video then whatever, their first album, sumplu called: camel, and their second: Mirage, are really excellent front to back, and will be a good change of pace from what you normally listen to. Blur sucks, and oasis are worse. What else did I want to say while I’m here, oh yeah you should listen to more zeppelin because you’re wrong 😂😂. Please listen to King Crimson as well!!! The court of the crimson king is seen widely as one of the best albums of all time, and I agree. It’s produced not amazingly, especially on epitaph, but I love how the drums sound, and have never understood why, so a breakdown on that I would love so much. Also listen to MF DOOM and Nothing But thieves. Anyway, glad to see you seem better and better spirited Patrick. Your impression of Mustaine grunting in front of an orchestra made me laugh like mad. See you around.

The chromatic descending or ascending solos you talk about are most of the time Dave Mustaine. He does lead on a lot of song and most of the time back and forth with the other guitarist. Sweating Bullet is all Dave. You can recognize his solos after listening to couple of songs.

It's all good, no worries. Megadeth is a strange band for me. On paper, I should like them because I like Metallica. But it turns out I like Metallica not because of the sound, but because James can write one hell of a song and perform it very well. I only know a bunch of Megadeth songs, but the two standouts for me are "Angry Again" (from the Last Action Hero soundtrack) and Symphony of Destruction. They have the right amount of cheese and a very tightly written.

You need to listen to the album Youthanasia. If you havent heard it you havent heard the best produced and writen album they have ever recorded, Cryptic Writings is a close second. Internet Megadeth fans are really MegaMeth fans - they are off their faces and dont know good production at all. Mustaine did like Led Zepplin growing up, and bands his sister listened to like Cat Stevens. in his later years he was saying he really liked Crowded House, he is also friends with Kenny G. Hescpretty eclectic in his listening tastes.

Honestly if Patrick wants a thrash band from this time with a ton of gang vocals, Anthrax is THE band for it. The entire Among The Living album is filled with awesome back and forth between lead and backing vocals and gang shouts and stuff. And then there's the killer riffs and all that of course. edit: Chris Schoenberg said all of the big 4 are from the same part of California, which is not true. Anthrax is NOT from the same scene as the other 3 in the big 4. Anthrax is from the east coast.
