Loving the style of your latest videos. I feel like I found an old VHS tape in the rubble after some world wide apocalypse, watching it and saying to myself: damn, if only we though that way before we let the earth fall apart. I absolutely agree. I think starting in the 90's with the advent of cheap foreign manufacturing Americans' ideas of value have gone horribly askew. I think there are two reasons for this. The first is that now the market is inundated with low value goods. The second is that Americans are now practically indoctrinated into thinking it is their patriotic duty to buy cheap shit. With these two factors you have an endless cycle of cheap manufacture and Americans pissing away their livelihood for the sake of propping up an economy the depends on cheap manufacturing. Sad. But this is why your channel in particular is so important. People with half a brain need to refuse to enter into that cycle. Instead they should (God forbid) SAVE their hard earned money and patiently research before they make purchases. They need to shift through the chaff to find what is true value to them. The opinions, therefore, of truly honest people like yourself are very valuable in that process. I recently watched a Z reviews and I sort of felt bad for the guy. I saw his desk littered with a mountain of cheap shit he was reviewing and in between his endless babble he would listen, quite literally for 5 seconds, to his music and then start babbling again. I prefer to SAVE my money, patiently seek out TRUE value and to always REMEMBER that what makes audio equipment valuable in the first place is my experience of the MUSIC.

Thanks man! Your comment reminds me of that Twilight Zone episode where he longs to just read a book and finally gets to do so after the apocalypse happens. Of course, there's a catch, but I won't ruin it in case you haven't seen it. If you haven't, check it out! It's called "Time enough at last" IIRC I'm going to have to use that second paragraph in a video. That was beautifully said. I want to talk about the idea of planned obsolescence and I think that ties in nicely. I too feel bad for people like him. I don't want to be that guy at the end of my life like "Well, I made a lot of money, but at what cost? It all means nothing now and I sacrificed my integrity in the process." Imagine being so out of touch with reality that shilling literally every single product you review seems normal. That's the life of a KZbinr. Plus you can't take all that gear with you. This is why I'm making a concerted effort to drastically reduce the amount of shit I have, because as Fight Club famously quipped "The things you own, ending up owning you."

@@HomeStudioBasics I am certainly going to check out that episode! Doing a video on planned obsolescence would be very welcome. I notice that HIFIMan in particular has a tendency to release headphones one year and then a year latter release a revision of that same headphone. Now this is not the same thing as planned obsolescence but is seems like it runs in the same vein to me. Dacs and amps also seem to turn over like water. That is one of the reasons I respect companies like Schitt, at least for their dacs. As I am sure you know, Shcitt design theirs dacs so the updateable components can be removed and replaced at home without having to purchase an entirely new piece of equipment. Great work. Your website, too, is a phenomenal resource for anyone researching headphones, amps and dacs or are just looking to learn more about sound. Very impressive and helpful. Thanks.

And it's literally the SAME F***** THING! But everyone wants to swipe their cards and toss their old one in a landfill. And it doesn't help we have these jerk off KZbin "influencers" regurgitating numbers and specs because welp that's their job apparently! The company is the food the influencer is the fork? And we are the pigs? And at the end of the day are these "pros" really playing the games or in this case listening to the music? Technology and greed are killing us. My pleasure, man! I'm always going to keep it real. That landfill comment really hits home. I think planned obsolescence is a huge problem as well - that is, stuff is made broken and designed to break down after a certain point. Even my dad, who doesn't really subscribe to conspiracies, noticed over time stuff being made worse and worse. He had an Echo leaf blower for over 30 years and I'll never forget that thing. But now? You're lucky if something lasts 5. Sorry I pissed you off! Lol. That's the price I pay for being honest. It can make me a little bitter and cynical towards society. Have you ever seen "Century of the Self?" I'd highly recommend it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ep-znppmh5aAZpY I too have been firing up my old console and playing Super Mario Bros. 3, wondering how technology has advanced so fast in only 30 years or so. Your pig comment reminded me of The Outer Worlds video game. There's this weird factory that produces "Boarst Wurst" only instead of it being what you'd think of as Brat Wurst (or some other semi-normal food), the pigs eat human remains lol. So in essence you're a cannibal if you eat it and enjoy it. And it's marketed as normal. Just some food you'd go and buy in a grocery store haha. It's not that much different from what a Hog Dog is made of I guess, but Americans still eat it, because America or something. Dress it up!

Thanks to reviewers people buy products that are not really what they want. Many people buy active noise cancelling headphones because they're under the impression that the higher price must mean that they sound better than headphones that cost less. They may have no idea that ANC headphones are for noise cancelling above all else and don't have great sound, they never have. I've also noticed that ANC cans are reviewed alongside regular wireless headphones which lose points for not having ANC as if all wireless headphones should have it.

I learned a while ago that better gear does not make me enjoy music more or "connect me more to my music." Or the hundred other lies audiophiles tell themselves as they pretend to enjoy their garbage music collection of snoozefest 32 bit Amber Rubarth and movie soundtracks to movies that arent even good. Real music lovers get as much pleasure out of $10 headphones they used their whole life than thousands of dollars of kit, and I see that now. I enjoy playing around with gear and hearing music better, but do I enjoy it more? No. Absolutely not. Two very separate things. I can connect with a favorite song if I hear it in an elevator to be honest.
@HomeStudioBasics2 жыл бұрын
Definitely laughed out loud at your comment. Yes, and that's precisely the lie peddled endlessly now. "You'll enjoy your music more!!" So music itself, while still a commodity, is not only that, but now it's *also* a tool used to sell shit to people. How sad is that? This is in part why I'm torn about Capitalism. One one hand, it's a pretty great system and works. On the other hand, it's kind of evil and corrupt; a way for people to get rich by selling lies and manipulating others into purchasing something they may not even need. Have you heard the Garden State soundtrack? that's an example of a really good one. I think it won a Grammy and deservedly so.

@@HomeStudioBasics id love to agree, however the majority of my money in audio these days is headed to Communist China, who undoubtedly is violating some IP issue or paying wages far less than even what we embarrassingly call adequate, but I digress. The main question for me is "does audio quality connect me more to my music"? And in all honestly, the answer is no. Its like what was the weather when I got my last beej. I like nice weather, I like beej. The two arent really connected. Enjoying music requires very little. I just have to hear it well in a manner somewhat detailed and pleasing. That can be achieved with a 128kbps mp3 off an iPod into $10 headphones, and I know this because for 20 years i had the most profound experiences with music on said setup. And while I have enjoyed the detail retrieval and how good my equipment sounds, its not really making me "love music" more. Its like if your girl is sitting around in shorts and a shirt vs all dressed up. So long as she's clean and hasnt just finished eating a can of sardines, theres a good chance youll find both sexy. Do you love her more when shes dressed up? No. Its just the same thing dressed up. Which is great, its enjoyable. But im also down with the shorts and shirt. I feel as though a lot of old company's, and I am a fairly new to audio and trying to be connoisseur, have really fell off. It's almost like everyday I get more and more skeptical about reviews when a product turn out to measure like a disgusting pig. I'm not a measure freak, and have enjoyed a fair share of products which weren't the brightest crayon. But you cant be charging an arm and a leg for something that is garbage. I think these companies are getting away by skimping heavily on everything and just riding the brands prestige. That's unacceptable and unrealistic when you know you got a bunch of crazy audiophiles that are chasing this endless nirvana. You may feel that's what is going to push sales, yet now a days a lot of people are about some kind of truth behind the marketing. Also on another note, a lot of companies who change CEO's and direction at the same time end up getting with the times and maintaining a level of expectation. It basically comes down to two things, youre either going to make a bunch of expensive products with limited variety or youre going to the walmart way and try reach a high volume of sales. Just like any other business. I will say though, as person who is very much into stereo listening. I dont want to raise hell here, but we got rega, hegel, and many more that are selling stupid in their mid-tier range which is 1000's of dollars and is designed so poorly it's beyond belief. Some products nearing 5 digit price tags and are crap. Yet, if you notice all the new companies are trying their best to provide something from nearly nothing. I can consider manufacturing and all of that, but this is a little over the top, you cant justify selling crap with high price tag. Profit is everything, and that's fine, we respect that. But dont rip people off with propaganda and marketing for a product that's going to have three times the longevity of a inferior build but sound like poop and cant even perform to a 90's standard of music. The thing is this issue is across the board and it's effecting not only products in music, but everything worldwide. These 5 star ratings make it even worse, as mentioned by another headphone reviewer/company it's like 99% of reviews fall between 3 and 5 stars.. or 7 and 10 stars.. so basically everything is great no matter what. That's a fairly flawed system, and is being passed on to many reviewers. It's a shame that honesty means a reviewer would cut off from product reviews, when in turn a company should take the criticism and work on fixing the issue and making a better product next time. Worse, is you never hear any negative reviews on a product unless it's going be a small company that doesn't have its foot in the door of the industry. But I do understand a perspective on a reviewer that if you have a big weight on your shoulder, not only from the company itself, but also from the businesses that sell these products. No one can make money, which is the goal, and buy every single product and do a review on it. Hell, they probably hoping to get a discount or keep the product they get for free if all goes well. They face the same struggle we all do.
@HomeStudioBasics2 жыл бұрын
Yes, this is why I rarely think expensive products are worth it. As an example, I respect ifi for making rock-solid amps, and even despite the Diablo not being worth $900 sound-wise, it's still built like a tank. I've always appreciated that about them. They AIN'T gonna make a cheap POS, that's for sure. FiiO's products aren't nearly as hefty, but the K5 Pro here still works flawlessly and sounds great. I think China gets a bad rep but they do make some solid audio products for sure. YES. That's another topic I want to discuss in a video and in fact, I may start writing the script today. This idea of "Everything is.. mostly good." As ridiculous as it sounds, there is some truth to it. Out of the 50+ Amps and DACS I've heard, only like 1 sounded like complete trash, and that was the SoundBlaster G3. With headphones obviously, it's a bit different as there is some truly atrocious sounding garbage out there. But it's really not hard to make a good DAC/Amp especially when you consider the open-source nature of the original Objective 2 design. Anyone can do it, thus why there's an overabundance now. The problem with the rating system is can you honestly tell me there's an amp that's 1 or 2 stars? How would you even justify that? It would have to be truly horrific and again, most amps are built well and sound good. Even headphones are getting a lot better in terms of their build and longevity. It's like the industry is being drowned in quality to the point where it all just ends up blurring together in a haze of absurdity. Headphone sound signatures are largely a matter of taste, but a discerning ear can tell a badly tuned one for sure. As far as companies, I really don't give a damn and will tell them honestly what I think. Surprisingly, (or not so surprisingly) none of them have cut off sending products - likely because they respect the fact that I will carry on with or without them. I won't let my life or my convictions be dictated by some audio manufacturer. That's ridiculous. Reviewers in general are teet suckling slaves, and I've never been like that - in audio or otherwise. I'm after the truth and always have been. If someone doesn't like it, so be it. I'm not a product peddler. I just told a rep yesterday that I'm not going to sit here and shill crap that I A) haven't reviewed and B) wouldn't actually purchase myself. Just for the sake of getting some extra clicks or trying to get them some extra sales on the flavor of the week DAC? No. That said, I still have to make money to justify doing this all day, so there's a fine line I have to balance between writing articles and making videos while still maintaining my sense of integrity and not just becoming another shill. This is why I'm moving away from a Rating system and just talking about products based on their value and if they're worth a purchase. It makes it much simpler. At this point, I'm in that phase of trying to get rid of products as they keep coming in. The good part about having many headphones and dacs is that you can make comparisons for people on the fly, but the bad part is my laundry room is filled with boxes and I hate clutter. xD Sometimes it's just too much. Too much crap lying around. I also have been getting back into making more beats and music lately. I'd like to review other stuff than just headphones and dacs, but you can get pigeonholed quickly into a certain type of product because companies know your viewers tune in for it and they're going to double down. This is why I mentioned in the last video that I'm drastically cutting back on DACS, 1) Because I can't stand them and 2) Because there are too many and they largely don't matter. Sometimes it just all feels so fake, to be honest with you.

So I took them off of my list, and there was a really good sale man and I got one unit and it's favorite all in one unit. Then I got my dac, it too is my favorite stand alone dac. One of my top rec's is and will likely remain a K5 Pro because it's a great piece of hardware. I want to try the K9 soon. I used to own a Magni/Modi 2 and sold it because I didn't like it at all. I heard they improved their line but you say not so much? And yeah, I can't stand DACS anymore and won't be reviewing them nearly as much. Only certain products I'm interested in to compare to stuff I have like hip-dac 2 vs. the original, K9 vs. K5 Pro, etc. I won't be delving into all the obscure brands because DACS are mostly a scam imo. I really appreciate the support my friend. It can be hard being the voice of reason in an overcrowded market because people really don't want to hear it. But it's the truth. @@HomeStudioBasics Honestly dont know how much they improved or didn't on schitt. It just wasn't my thing, it may have been my headphones. However, those are the headphones i've used with everything and they sound great and even more so with eq. Yes I feel the same, I think in the realm of headphones you get way less out of dacs than you do a stereo setup, I maybe wrong. But I feel like a few factors do vary and are much more noticeable on stereo. I'm not an audio professional here. Yea man, it is like that. I mean people are sometimes just a little bit too passionate about certain things and just go crazy cause this audio thing is no joke. So many variables and aspects to a setup it's quite crazy. It will make any sane person go mad trying to find the best, but rather I think it's what is the best for you that really counts.

Reminds me of a video on capitalism and innovation, in which he states that capitalism isn't driven by innovation but profit motive. So if something is profitable, such as headphones, amps, dacs, etc., then it will be produced and multiple copy cat products will be made not to improve a technology but simply to produce a profit. Should check out the video and youtuber, very informative and insightful kzbin.info/www/bejne/pn_LlX6miayZd7c Love your vids by the way! Love that! I will check out the video. It's so true though, especially when you consider real life examples like the 50x being carbon copied by many companies over the years. The sad part is that in America, we manufacture very little. Most of the crap we have is outsourced. There are very few innovators in this country. A famous example is a company like IBM, one in which my dad worked for for almost 40 years. He told me that they went from making pretty much everything to absolutely nothing. Sad when you think about it, as he worked on the gigantic mainframe computers they used to operate.
