Colleagues confirmed that the Cessna that crashed into homes in Santee on Monday was owned by Dr. Sugata Das - a cardiologist who worked at the Yuma Regional Medical Center in Yuma, Arizona.
The center's chief medical officer issued a statement, saying "As an outstanding cardiologist and dedicated family man. Dr. Das leaves a lasting legacy. We extend prayers and support to his family, colleagues and friends during this difficult time".
Home security camera video shows the twin-engine Cessna as it plunges from the sky and hurtles to the ground below. A moment later, a fiery explosion could be seen from miles away.
At least two people have died following the crash and two homes were destroyed.
Minutes earlier, air traffic control noticed something wasn't right.

The faa is right in the sense they basically said on other accounts. What do you want us to advise, don’t pitch for the sky and stall your plane in takeoff?? So many of these accidents don’t warrant a recommendation. @This Will Get Me Banned Again A medical emergency is possible. However it’s also very possible to come out of the clouds in a dive and overspeed which at that altitude would be unrecoverable. That’s exactly what happens when a pilot becomes disoriented. They become task saturated. Don’t realize they are in a dive and overspeeding the plane until it’s too late. Especially with low cloud cover. You come out of the clouds you have seconds to orient yourself before impact. Barely enough time for the brain to process what is happening and no flaps power on dive there’s no chance of recovery.

100% correct. I don't think he had his autopilot on the localizer. He blew right through it ( IN the clouds) Then went to hand flying the airplane and flying alone twin engine in the clouds, task saturated. For all the ones commenting that do not fly and never flown. I won't get into how our bodies sense orientation through the fluid in our ears, however, when the pilot is in that extreme state. Its super easy to look over the obvious like your artificial horizon, or properly read altimeter which is what tells the pilot where his plane is in relation to the ground. Rather listen to the senses in your body which can be very wrong in the air. Even atc told him, level your wings and climb. He was in a bank angle at high speed and he thought his wings were level. Ceiling was at like 1700. Excluding the amount of time needed to Orient oneself once he came out of the clouds he probably could have recovered. The full atc audio, flight data, his flight plan tell the whole story. These people commenting about how he sounds confused, absolutely, because he way too many things to handle at once. We don't just steer an airplane across the sky, especially on autopilot,unlike the movies portray, theres so many other things going on and flying twin engine even more to handle. I couldn't even imagine being in that position alone.

@Gold Plated Junk en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spatial_disorientation becuase i dont think that without the actual scientific "inner ear- vestibular system- somatogravic illusion" definition/process of spatial disorientation that people can accept it as an beleiveable explanation for bringing a plane down in this manner, certanley everything about thats known so far seems to fit a pretty textbook example of spatial disorientation( not ruling out anything else/medical etc either) but I don't think it seems believable how could create a circumstance like this despite how many actual pilots are saying it could & does
@gtm624
@gtm624 2 жыл бұрын
@@ar4203 valid point. Thanks for the link. Unless you have flown. It’s hard to understand. But to try and simplify. What non pilots are not including in their equation is the whole other set of tasks the pilot needs to tend to. While flying the plane. And when you add emotions on top. You get tunnel vision. I’ve done it. I’ve gotten task saturated just in training. Something stupid like forgetting to pull back on throttle after climbing out. It’s super easy to let little things like that slip by when your nervous and task saturated. Almost every crash is never boom something happens and your down. It’s always a series of events and or poor decisions. This was not a simple approach. I laugh at the ones telling all the pilots it’s medical. Simply because one cannot understand what it is like to fly a plane and how many things a pilot must do/monitor when flying across the land other then fly a plane. Especially an imc flight and ils approach. Which simply means the pilot is using instruments to fly and land not his eyes. But the best of us can think we know what our body is doing at all times. But not the case. Check out the guys doing inverted flights and pouring water from a bottle into a glass. The plane is inverted but it looks normal. So now in that case not only does the pilots body think it’s in a normal upright position his eyes can also see that when he’s pouring. But he is inverted, descending towards the earth. In the clouds you’ll have no way to tell this from out your window. All you have is basically a 2” round gauge that will tell you that. Now. Add the fear and emotions on top of 10 other things coming at the pilot at once tunnel vision sets in and it’s super easy to overlook or mis interpret what your eyes are seeing. Everything happens extremely fast. Extremely fast. For the pilot unfortunately it was in a blink of an eye from the time he blew through the localizer to the time he came out of the clouds in a pretty common SD spiral. The localizer is a radio signal his radio picks up on to guide the plane. For whatever reason unknown to me at least right now he did not catch it. Which that was the beginning of the end. Atc radios he’s off course and asks if he’s correcting. Meanwhile. While being asked about that. The pilot is trying to figure out how nav issue. Then kills the auto pilot and try’s to hand fly the plane in the clouds while trying to deal with all the other tasks while being extremely nervous and scared. I’m just trying to help paint the picture here because the ones that never flew couldn’t even imagine what it’s like to be in a situation like that. I wouldn’t wish that on my enemy. Sensory overload as well. When most humans are put in a potential life threatening situation. It changes everything in the body and how it operates. I mean this can also be seen outside of aviation and just in general for humans under heavy stress.

Maybe he had some medical problem which caused him not to be able to correct as he wanted. The final minute of his flight he doesn't react to the ATC callouts and he doesn't seem to fly the aircraft even though the last 20 seconds he most probably was flying below the clouds and could easily have corrected the situation. The flight path he took indicates that he didn't even try to correct the bank nor the nose down position that increased slowly. So he is likely to have been incapacitated or even unconscious

Yup, his roll was greater than 45 degrees and he pulled UP hard on the stick sending his plane straight into the ground when he thought he was pulling "UP" into the clouds. When the instrumentation tells you "PULL UP! PULL UP! ALTITUDE! PULL UP!" If you pull up and you're at a 45 degree roll or more, you're killing yourself. You need to level the plane first and then pull up. This guy just pulled up on the stick while he was in a sharp banking turn where he was more upside-down than right-side up and sent himself straight into the ground. Because he didn't know how to properly read instruments.

I'm not saying for sure this is what happened is just my opinion, It's called a somatic graphic illusion. All his troubles really started when he was given a circling to land command that he failed to comprehend getting him all out of sorts, was in over his head from that point forward. He was in and out of the clouds and he was only about 6 -8 miles from the threshold at that point. He's rushing to get configured, was already dealing with task saturation and was behind the airplane, wayyy behind it, things were happening fast and got himself overwhelmed trying to get set up on his approach, and when ATC canceled his clearance and told him to climb immediately and turn I believe he panicked and pulled too hard on the yolk and being still configured for his approach flaps probably still at 10°or so the plane reacted in a way that surprised him going hard nose up, that's when he got the somatic graphic illusion. It happens when your inner ear gives you the sensation that you're stalling when you're actually not, then probably stalled it for real and by the time he realized he was in trouble he popped out of the clouds in a hard right condition at 70° nose down at over 250 knts two thousand feet above the ground with no time to react or even try to pull out. At 2400 AGL that's just absolutely no altitude to work with and at that speed you're hitting the ground within 3 to 5 seconds. You wanna be pilots out there these twin engine high performance prop aircraft are extremely powerful and you have to be proficient and knowledgeable of every aspect of that aircraft, especially flying them single pilot because things happen fast and if you're not on top of the airplane they can and will kill you. Task saturation, yanking too hard on the yolk while possibly still being configured for his approach with flaps out and the plane reacted completely different than he thought it would causing a somatic graphic illusion, and possibly some spatial disorientation thrown in the mix as well. Thats what i think killed this guy, and unfortunately also the guy on the ground, RIP.

One possible cause, he got a case of the leans in IMC and as he transitioned from IMC to VMC the aircraft was in a 50 degree nose down right bank with throttles set to climb. Another possible cause, is a medical issue during his attempt to intercept the ILS approach for runway 28R. He missed the interception, going right of course, and things went down hill from there. Judging from the METAR data that day for the destination airport, I think the most probably answer is the second cause, a medical issue… RIP Doc

I'm a commercial pilot with an instrument rating, and have watched several commentaries/speculations of this accident. This pilot crashed because he couldn't handle a localizer/circle-to-land approach, couldn't handle flying blind in the clouds, and couldn't handle the speed and complexity of his airplane by himself. Edit - I'm now 50/50 thinking it might've been a medical incapacitation vs spatial disorientation. No offence intended to the pilot, may he rest in peace.
@ryandraughon2861
@ryandraughon2861 2 жыл бұрын
He seemed to have trouble maintaining altitude after his approach to MYF was cancelled. He was directed to turn east, which he did, but his speed was erratic and may have approached stall. Any chance he didn't reconfigure the plane for climbing after missing his approach? Obviously we can only conjecture.
@crooked-halo
@crooked-halo 2 жыл бұрын
@@ryandraughon2861 During that approach cancellation ATC ordered him to climb, the pilot responded that he WAS climbing, however ATC tracks show him in a descent which increased quickly in speed. He was spatially disoriented in the soup, thinking he was climbing, yet rapidly descending. A very fast dive, which can be seen in videos. It's obvious from listening to ATC communication that he was very nervous & getting overworked. That area of the country is usually clear, and although the pilot was proficient in the plane and the route, he might not have much recent time of actual IFR flight. Hell, any pilot who's flown in the clouds knows what it's like to feel like you're climbing, turning, descending, when you're actually doing the opposite. Trusting instruments is a learned process that takes practice, practice, practice. Edit - I now am 50/50 thinking either spatial disorientation vs. a medical issue after watching this kzbin.info/www/bejne/hHekn4qirdyamZo

I’m a flight instructor. The flight track is very indicative of a loss of orientation, so I don’t suspect it was a medical emergency. Unfortunately, flying in clouds when you can’t see the ground is incredibly disorienting and most situations where non-instrument rated pilots end up in clouds are fatal. Even if he had his instrument rating, it doesn’t mean he was proficient or well practiced recently.

He might have been a great doctor, but that doesn't mean he was a good pilot. Beechcraft, considered the "Cadillac" of airplanes have a nickname, "Doctor Killer." But this nickname can be applied to any complex aircraft like the Cessna 310. There are all kinds of sensory illusions a pilot can suffer from because of the forces that effect a pilot, especially in IMC (Instrument Meteorological Conditions when the pilot can't see the ground). These sensory illusions can lead the pilot into thinking their plane is oriented in a way that it isn't. Pilots need to learn to not trust the "seat of their pants" and use the instruments to orient themselves and this requires quite a bit of skill. A good doctor can make a terrible pilot, but a lot of people tend to think if they are good at one thing they must be good at everything, but this simply isn't true.
@dirkvanderlaan31
@dirkvanderlaan31 2 жыл бұрын
The last 20 seconds the aircraft flew below the clouds in VMC, so there was no disorientation during this flight phase. He would have had ample time to recover the situation which he didn't even try. An incapacitated pilot is the most likely cause of this. This is supported by the fact the pilot suddenly stopped responding to ATC the last minute of the flight.

maybe heart attack or stroke. The pilot's tramissions with ATC are garbled and difficult to understand. There were no responses to ATC requests to climb.

Not true, he responded in normal fashion ("4000" and "tail number") back to ATC when they told him he was dangerously low and asked him to climb to 4000. It may appear to be garbled to you, but that is they normally respsond.

@@mark9118 I'm not relying on others for my own opinion. The arguments is what this is all about and claiming the pilot was spatial disoriented while flying in VMC is pretty hard to believe. The alternative of pilot's incapacitation explains everything: the erroneous flying, the sudden radio-silence and the fact that he did not even try to correct the situation. Seems obvious to me.

Why is everyone assuming this was a drunk accident? Disoriented could mean anything and in this case he most likely suffered a medical condition since everything suggests that everything was okay a moment before he started swerving.

If there was a flight data and cockpit voice recorder (there wasn't), and sufficient wreckage to examine, that might be the case. However, the plane disintegrated and burned up upon impact, as did the body of the pilot, so not much physical evidence to go by.

After what happened with Kobe Bryant, I'm suspicious that flight training is a bit too relax. I know several famous people who have helicopter and plane licenses and it's like... really? It's not a motorcycle, why is it so easy to attain a chopper license, etc? What's more: I don't understand why they don't simply use their instruments more prolifically. There is a literal line-bar on the dashboard of all choppers and planes that shows your current incline and altitude. You simply need to keep the bar horizontal along the dial and you can literally ignore everything else so long as you're not so low that you're going to climb into the side of a mountain like how Kobe Bryant went down last year or so. Must have gotten dizzy or confused. Blood sugar, maybe inner ear or even some kind of neurological moment. Stroke, heart attack, or just simple vertigo could do this. But again: instruments. It must have been very severe his distraction, or he must have been very amateur to fall like that with all the hints he had from both coms and his equipment. If I had to bet on anything, I'd bet that he had become total feint, possible approaching feinting. Could have been anything that caused that, too. Some people feint for no reason and it never happens again. Dude could have been totally healthy and had that happen, which is why flying should NOT be something for everyone. It's way too dangerous and the airspace isn't something that's easy to deal with either. Planes and choppers crash into one another on top of botched landings and straight up plummets to the ground. I think it's time we stopped letting pilots have it so easy. If this was an airliner, it would be a totally different level of mayhem. So something is lopsided about the training and sophistication of flight training. There's a discrepancy clearly. And it needs to be overhauled because flying has been going on for such a long time. This stuff shouldn't have to happen. I mean, we've been airborne for almost 100 years now. It's time to realize that being a pilot isn't just a job or a hobby -- it's a major responsibility. There's no where to fall that someone probably won't get hurt or have property damaged. I mean can you imagine being a mailman and seeing a plane coming for you out of the fking sky? It's like a nightmare we've all had 1000 times and would never expect to experience. I mean go to your window right now, look out, and imagine a giant aircraft coming directly at you. The immediate sense of doom must have been overwhelmingly horrifying. Even the noise was likely horrible to endure, as the young woman said. This could easily be another 9/11 if it hit something bigger and more packed with people. Makes you wonder how much damage an REAL plane accident could do. Crazy stuff.

Sad to hear about this loss. Condolences to his Family and friends. What really happened is offered as an experienced opinion from the FAA. Without a “Blackbox” that records everything we may never know the true cause. Am wondering if this Plane had its Instrument Panel upgraded to a Glass Panel? If so, how elaborate was it? Also how extensive was the automation to control flying? Were some type of motorized Servos installed for the Control Surfaces? If so, which ones?
