I've been looking at getting a turntable once again having been without one for at least 20 years and was looking for something user friendly and entry-level without the risk of damaging records. The LP70 was a serious consideration but I appreciate you reporting on this skipping issue. I looked into it further on the web and it looks like there are several such complaints (and also in the comments here). Hopefully there isn't anything fundamentally wrong, but it is a fairly new model yet and you never know. Anyway, much appreciated, I will hold off for now.

@@frankieritz if AT has a design issue hopefully they address it. Might be a batch of parts with the auto mechanism or maybe something as simple of something not being properly greased causing the arm to bind up with small movements. I’d check to see if the locked factory set anti-skate is ‘correct’ with an acrylic platter mat or test disc.

Yup, sounds like the LP70 is plagued with the same problem as the previous generation of LP60's because those skipped a lot too. Must have something to do with the auto-start/stop mechanism with relation to tracking because my fully manual AT-LP120X has never had skipping issues whatsoever. It's rock solid.

@@Boggedythe 60x/70x and 120 are just completely different turntables in every respect, of which the automatic/manual is just 1 difference. The issue with the original at-lp60 was a somewhat resonant straight tonearm which could skip on bass heavy records. I had 1 record my Aiwa variant LP60 would skip on. I haven't had the 60x skip on any record, so that issue appeared to be fixed on the later model. The 70x has a new tonearm again, so maybe a recurrence of old problems.

I reached out to Audio Technica and they told me that they could not reproduce my issue. They ended up replacing the turntable but I still have the issue. So I did not follow up with them because I don't think they can or will fix this. I do think that this turntable has a tracking force issue due to the fact that the tonearm is probably too light.

Did you purchase the suspect new records from Amazon? I never buy from them. Always some problems or they look like the have been rewrapped. But on almost any brand new vinyl, small bits of vinyl are left behind during the record making process. I really noticed it one day when cleaning several new Blue Notes with a 'Spin Clean' and noticed what I thought were black hairs floating in the solution when in fact it was thin strands of black vinyl, so getting that off the LP's surface before the first play is important. I bet that the downforce on the cartridge will measure different at different points along its arc. A couple of things; if you hold the arm by the cart end and slowly move it from the outside to the spindle , do you feel any bumps, subtle friction, holdups, along the way? Or when holding the end of the tonearm and sort of rotate it on its axis, is there any play in the arm bearings? Don't want to be rude but the AT-LP70X is a piece of junk. On another site, "Andy's Audio Krapp", he goes through a litany of problems with his and several mistakes in correcting the issues. Return it and purchase something else. Several people have the same issues.
@RamblingWolfmanКүн бұрын
I have bought just a few albums on Amazon and have had good luck so far. Now, when it comes to cds, that's a different story. 😄 From my understanding, the Spin Clean can actually take off bits of vinyl from the edge of the record when using it. I'm not sure if that's true, but that's what I've heard. Lot's more to come on the LP70X and other stuff. Thanks for watching and commenting.👍🏼

@@RamblingWolfman You have it wrong, record cleaners are removing detritus left behind from the record manufacturing process. This junk can get lodged in the grooves if not removing it first. I’m having a similar issue with skipping on a LP 70 BT. Most of my albums play great with no skipping. Only happens on two albums The Band 50th edition and AIC Dirt. I took the albums to my local record shop and they played great on their Sony turntable. The owner of the shop suggested adding just a little weight when I play the albums. Adding a dime (3 grams) when I play both albums seam to solve the issue.
@seanfarrington7134Күн бұрын
Just an update. I felt that a dime might be too heavy so I experimented and found that a paperclip worked great to resolve the skipping. I used two very small pieces of velcro to affix it to my tonearm close to the stylus. This way I could remove it and only use it when I'm playing certain albums that I know skip like the two I mentioned above. The combined weight of the paper clip and velcro was under 1 gram.

I then opened up a brand new 180gr album and before it was over it was skipping. Put on some older alums and it played fine, then open up ANOTHER 180gr album and it started skipping. I contacted Audio Technica thinking they probably had received numerous inquiries about this same issue and that they had an easy fix. Unfortunately this was their response. "Thank you for your inquiry. It appears that this item needs to be serviced. You may want to check with your place of purchase about possibly swapping this out for another per their return policy. If you are outside their return window please follow the instructions at the below link to send the product to our US Service Center." I wonder if changing to an elliptical stylus might help with the skipping issues - it should fit the record goove better. Here is an old school trick. my brothers are a bit older than me, but when they were in high school in the late seventies they had a cheap TT on their budget system ( homemade speakers from shop class), they took a penny and taped it to the headshell, you might balance a dime/penny on yours to see if it helps with enough weight on the tone arm. It looks like this tonearm doesn't have the rotating weight on it. it probably has the adjustment inside the table and not worth tearing apart and voiding the warranty. If it was me I would send it back, if enough people return theirs with the skipping issue, maybe Audio Technica will fix them. Well I know I may get some hate here, but I'm a CD guy myself. started CDs back in the eighties because I didn't have to fuss with cleaning records and what the TT needs are. YMMV

For the first records,old and very news ,had the same problems( skip songs or play continuously the same music points ) that I reed in comments or I see in your video. But the last 15-20 days I have not problems. I don't know why. With lp70xbt I replaced lp60x and really I hoped that lp70xbt will be much better at all! Has little a bit better sound from lp60x but his construction in the system arm cartridge in my opinion is a disappointment. A wrong buy . With lp 60x that I had from the covid period never had a problem! In my opinion is a very good turntable ( lp60x ) at all for the price ( 160 euro lp60x ) and in comparison with more famous and expensive turntable! I think that is a very good solution for those that wish good sound with few money! Excuse me for my bad English but I have never been in a country that English is the language of country.. Please post a new video if when and if you find the solution. I have the same story as you with this turntable. I purchased it just after Thanksgiving. My records are in like new condition. I have several turntables, fluance rt85, a atlp120, and a stanton t62. Records that play fine on all of those will not play without loop skipping on the 70x. Ugh. I checked the table for level with a bubble level. I also thought maybe the arm lift was not retracting all the way. I verified with a flashlight that it was retracted and not touching the tonearm lift ball. A different stylus with a sharper profile might be better, BUT it still should not be skipping with a conical. I thought abput it and all I can figure is the tonearm is too light to match the compliance of of the atvm95 series cantilever, OR they designed too much antiskate. I was going to check the antiskate with a blank geodisk but this table is back in its box cause I can't tolerate the skipping. I should have researched a little better before i bought it. Apparently this is a known issue in the forums. Ugh

Hello everyone, I'm Alberto from Italy. I received this turntable from my girlfriend as a Christmas gift for Christmas. It played perfectly for 10 days and then the skips began with all the records both old and new. Since after some experiments I blamed the little weight on the tip, I solved it by simply by inserting a washer of about 1.5 grams around the lever for manual grip. Skips totally disappeared, I've been listening to random records for three days and they are totally gone.
@BoggedyКүн бұрын
While you were correct that the arm was tracking too light, 1.5 grams is WAY too much weight for this stylus. It should track around 1.8 to 2.2 grams and you're 3.5 to 4! You're going to damage your records & wear your stylus down quick.

Add some affordable turntable upgrade feet. It is not a long shot, vibrations may be picked up into the stand. The Lp might have a small defect or wave.

The Audio Technica AT-70LPX is supposedly factory set to be spot on with regard to tracking force and anti-skate {it is intelligently designed to have a non-replaceable cartridge, but you can upgrade the stylus}. It seems improbable that this would be happening to three tables without perhaps some quality control issues coming to the fore. This table is VERY popular. Perhaps the demand is outstripping the company's ability to assure high quality. Call the company you bought it from and request a replacement.

The old LP120's antiskate was weak to nonexistent so they "fixed" it by making it WAY too strong on the 120X. They say the antiskate should = the downforce, but I had to HALF that number on mine. I wonder if the LP70 is similar. At any rate, I'm sorry you have to go through this frustration. I'm sure you'll get it figured out. Try toning down that antiskate.

I had no idea that Audio Technica had a history of this. I'm hoping that this isn't a widespread problem, but if it is, I hope there is a solution. Unfortunately, I don't believe that there is any way to adjust anything on this table except for the speed. Thanks for watching and commenting. I'm really looking forward to being a part of the "budget" or "budget-ish" home audio community.👍🏻

@@RamblingWolfman it doesn't have anti skate ?? but we'll do internally there might be a screw somewhere around there that does operate a spring. Try adding the weight as I suggested to the Head shell somewhere along where the pickup point is for the arm if you go to a try place you might be able to get one of those stick on weights try one gram and then adjust the vertical tracking angle weight after you've done that. that will put you back to what the correct balance and weight should be on the cartridge, or you've got the scales just use the scales. Also you could try not having in the table balanced ,have it slightly sloping down from the center of the spindle to the tip of the cartridge bit tricky to setup but possible. only have to go a little bit couple of degrees if it's a digital meter if it's a bubble probably to the edge of the marking

I've had my LP70X since Oct last year and I haven't had any issue with skipping, and it sounds fantastic. It was a great upgrade from my old LP60 (non x) that would skip on a few records, that don't skip anymore on the LP70X. So idk maybe you have a bad one or something. Maybe they have a quality control issue.
@edwinsinclair985315 күн бұрын
Since there is a pop or click on the Marantz in the same spot that it skips on the Audio Technica, i would suspect there's some kind of debris in the grove of that pressing or it's just a bad pressing. The Audio Technica's cartridge and stylus just won't track it where the Marantz will. Have seen this before. Many of the new pressings are just not the quality of the older LPs. There's a lot of variables here like what are you using to clean the disc etc.

I got the same deck for Christmas and have the same issue with skipping/looping on brand new records. When it happens, it's always closer to the end of a side, usually last couple of tracks. FWIW I have also upgraded the stylus to ML variant. Put on Rumours first, side A was flawless (sound quality improvement is insane) but had a minor skip on Oh Daddy on side B and was slighly hopeful. Then put on Hotel California and it entered an endless loop on The Last Resort :lolsob: So not sure a better stylus is gonna fully "fix" it. Super frustrating as it's a great sounding deck otherwise esp. paired with a better stylus and an external preamp.

Well that's telling me the anti skate is too much, dial it back to the zero amount do this while it's skipping and you'll find it will sort out the problem. Also make sure your deck is level not just the platter but the deck I have noticed on cheap turntables I've had to correct a few that the platter doesn't sit very well on the spindle, try holding the spindle tight with a bit of rubber balloon in your hand and just slide the platter side to side in a rotation motion clockwise anticlockwise and then push down a little bit in the middle, make sure it is sitting level.

@r0mant17 күн бұрын
Just as an update in case it's helpful, a few other very crude things I've tried to "fix" this: - Replaced the mat with a rubber one which obv didn't do much (didn't really expect it to for this issue) besides just saving me some sanity from the felt one clinging to records. - Seeing someone mention penny on the tonearm to increase tracking force I did an experiment and tried attaching a paperclip to the tonearm's small handle after encountering a part of a record that was consistently looping. Interestingly, that "solved" the looping in that case and it played past that but then I removed the paperclip to see if it loops again and it didn't. So not sure what to make of it lol. - After the above, I thought "what if i get a thicker mat" so I stacked both the original felt mat and new rubber one together and it didn't do much either as it looped on the next track (and the same paperclip trick worked again). So idk, as much as I like troubleshooting things, I like listening to music more so I'm considering returning this table while I'm still in the return period and shelling out a $100 more for a LP3XBT which has all the same features but seems to be better built, not have skipping/looping issues and has adjustable tracking force and anti-skate (and is compatible with the same VM series stylus). Curious what you end up doing, looking forward to your next video.

I bought some new records and one of them skipped so I assumed it was defective and I returned it to the online seller for a replacement. Then another new record skipped and returned it, and then another... I clean all records before play, TT is level, not close to a bass source and set up on a solid wooden entertainment unit on my basement cement floor so I'm pretty confident vibrations are not causing this. It hadn't donned on me that my TT was perhaps the problem until I saw this video! I contacted the store I bought the TT from and they said they haven't heard of any such issues until the fellow I was speaking to did a Google search while we spoke and saw the dozens and dozens of reports. They have asked me to send them videos of it skipping in order to return the TT but I returned those albums for replacements and have yet to receive them. Hopefully they will take it back because I don't want to have to deal with all that skipping over and over again and deal with AT down the road as I can see the pattern here. I am hoping to buy a different TT, likely from a different brand. Seriously thinking about the Fluance RT84. Looking forward to your follow-up video and what you may have uncovered!

If the skipping is happening on the very same spot, I doubt it is a turntable issue alone. It could be that the weigh of the cartridge is not enough to play that part but that is an issue with the record, not the turntable. If it was an antiskate problem, it would skip in random places, not the same one over and over.
@oscarmouse65ify11 күн бұрын
Not a true solution to the skipping issue I'm afraid, but in the UK the difference between a new LP70 and a new LP120x on Amazon can be as little as £30 if you don't need a blue tooth version or automatic, the LP120x is fully manual. I don't know if it's feasible for you either by cost or location, but perhaps you could consider exchanging the LP70 for an LP120x and simply side step the problem. My son runs an LP120x and if has been faultless for in the two years since I bought it. I had a skip recently on my own system on a new record and know that feeling when your stomach drops although luckily mine was simply dirt in a groove and easily cleaned. It sounds like a cartridge issue as the issue on the record repeats itself to a point where you know where its going to skip. The stylus points will be shaped differently and it looks like the AT stylus is riding the groove where your Marantz stylus isnt. A couple of things to suggest are: 1. Check the tips of the stylus with a light and magnifier and check for damage or debris on the stylus.2. Check that the turntable including the platter are level as if they aren't then that too can kick the tracking of the stylus out. 3. If you have any hifi store in your area see if they can try out a temporary cartridge change just to see if it is a cartridge problem. I used to have an AT 120 X but now have a Technica 1500C so I have some previous experience with using an AT turntable. I hope this helps. Dont let this experience put you off as its a great hobby to get into. Good luck.

I could be wrong - so please forgive me in advance. The Marantz has a T4P (P-mount) cartridge. Those should have a tracking force of no more than 1.5g. Ideally they should track at 1.25g. But please look into that. For my taste, it seems too heavy. On the other hand, try the AT at 3g. I know that sounds like a lot, but keep in mind that for example the LP60 (with the 3600 cartridge) tracks at 3.5g. NONE of that will do any harm to your records, so I would say it's worth a try. Now for the anti skate settings... for the adjustable turntables the rule of thumb is, when your tracking force is set to 1.5, so should be the anti skate. If it's not adjustable, well there's nothing you can do, really. IF you want to know anyway, try getting a BLANK vinyl disc so you can SEE whether the stylus skates or not. All that being said, the Marantz is by far the better turntable. It SHOULD sound better than the AT. You may want to try and replace cartridge and/or stylus. Both don't last forever, I'm afraid, and the Marantz is getting on in years. Best of luck, sir!

Thicker records (180 grams) slightly change your VTA (Vert Tracking Angle). This can also be effected by a thicker mat. If the VTA is slightly off from the factory this can add up and cause skipping. Check your VTA. Having said that, the most likely culprit is the new and more accurate stylus generating more heat and friction. In this case, I would increase the tracking force and decrease the antiskate force. Picture disks can be challenging and I’m not sure I would judge my table’s performance with a picture disk. Good Luck

One thing to check is if the support that raises and lowers the arm is fully down when the arm lowers. Another thing is your Marantz table using the same style stylus? The LP70X comes with a conical stylus that type of stylus doesn’t track as deep in the groove as an elliptical or more advanced stylus. I use a LP120X with the same cartridge but have elliptical (bonded and nude types) and microlinear styli that I interchange between. Never had skips with either of those. Also have a Sony linear table with a Realistic Shure clone with an elliptical .2x.7 elliptical stylus. Never had skips on that. The pop in your record leads me to believe that higher riding of the conical stylus in the groove causes the stylus to jump out of the groove. The fact it keeps repeating shows me that the factory set anti-skate is doing its job.
@DirkGently197213 күн бұрын
Agree here. These turntables typically cheap-out on the stylus, as suggested by above commenter. I see Amazon reviews of them skipping. Enough of the reviews say the same thing that there is definitely something wrong. I wouldn't buy one because of it. Also, the noticeable pop you now hear with the Marantz is likely the AT damaging your record by skipping before. Sorry to say, the AT is damaging your albums. RETURN IT. And that difference in tracking force shouldn't have mattered.
@Buick5416 күн бұрын
I just bought the same turntable and have played maybe 4 of my 1977 albums that I bought new back then and so far no problems. It could be the antiskate but as you know it is not adjustable. When you compare it to your Marantz player and it sounds different and doesn't skip either not at all or less keep in mind that what you are hearing is the difference in the phono cartridge/stylus more than the turntable itself. When anyone compares 2 turntables unless both tables have the same cartridge you are not hearing the tables as much as the cartridge/stylus. Ideally a good turntable should have a mostly neutral effect on the sound. You did mention that even your Marantz while it didn't skip it did pick up a "pop" sound indicating that the vinyl record itself has a defect which could cause the LP 70 to skip so that problem has more to do with the record and not the turntable. The Marantz simply handles that record defect better than the LP 70. In any case it wouldn't hurt to discuss the problem with Audio Technica if you feel the need to.

Something's a bit weird I'm a bit early in the video I would have less anti-skate you don't need to set it to the weights of the cartridge. looking at the picture you showed try turning it back to 0.7, play the record where it's skipping and adjust the anti- skate see if that sorts out the problem!! also make sure it is level. Looking at comments it seems to be a trait, I would say the bearings are too tight and they're pinching up because they're not designed with the tolerance, you could try adding a weight to the headshell, above the cartridge say 1-1.5 grams, and adjuster the tracking weight accordingly, set it up normal after you've added the weight. Balancing the arm 5 to 6 mm above the record without stylus guide, that should give you the correct adjustment tracking weight, then adjust it to the desired weight what should be halfway between the minimum and the maximum for the cartridge or slightly on the heavier side by about 0.2-0.3 of a gram. Set the anti- skate for 0.5-1.3g. for instants, if you set the tracking weight to one and a half grams, don't set the anti- skate to that figure!! set it to say 0.5-1.2g. Also I have found that the anti-skate/ really called bias Adjustment is not accurate on the dial in most cases. reading off the dial you could be giving it more anti-skate than it should be having. Where you are playing the skip? At the same time adjust the anti skate while it's playing to the zero position, in increments till it goes away I think you'll be alright.
