I've been performing magic for over 20 years, and I've always wanted to be a filmmaker as well but I'm just now getting around to it. I have one arriving today, looking forward to doing some ambient/nature recordings. The only thing I don't like, are the micro USB types. They are flimsy and when they were the 'new thing' 10-15 years ago, I had a few items break purely due to that type of usb socket! On small items like this, USB C should already be the standard, like it has been on phones for years. I'd pay the extra few coins. Great content and very helpful video, thanks.

04:07 2GB is not the best option - this setting tells you what the maximum single file the recorder can create if you record continuously for many hours. For example, if we record 16bit/44.1k, the recorder will automatically "break" the files every 3 hours and 20 minutes (for 16bit/48kHz respectively 3h and 6m) and further recording will be in the next file. However, if in the meantime a serious failure occurs (e.g. sudden power loss), then unfortunately the entire previous record is irretrievably lost. For this reason, it is worth considering whether to use a lower value of automatic file splitting (we have here from 64MB to 2GB). Of course, the safest option is 64MB, i.e. closing one file and opening another one every 64MB, but this in turn means that we have only about 6 minutes of recording in one file, the continuation is in the next and in the next. Then we need to "glue" these files together. But on the other hand, we are almost 100% sure that in the event of a failure we will only lose the last 6 minutes. In the recorder, we can choose the following values: 64, 128, 256, 512MB, 1GB and 2GB. It is worth thinking ahead and choosing the right value, depending on how valuable the recording we are making and how high a degree of reliability we expect.

I stumbled upon this video by chance. I was intrigued with the audio interface facility as an aid to mutitrack music recording. Just to illustrate possible use. If I use Garageband on my Mac with am externak mixing desk, say a Boehringer 6 channel.mixer and i want to either DI or mic up a guitar or bass, how would I utilise the dr05x ? Would I put the instruments through the mixer and connect the desk output to the tascam.or is that pointless? I'm trying to work out whether this device would be a better option than my old M-Audio inteface and a mixing desk. This is only for home recording so I'm not wanting to survey or thousands on studio grade equipment but the sound of your you tube video was pretty impressive..certainly better by a long way when compared to the AM radio I listened to in my teens.

I am trying to use a DR05X to record music my neighbor is playing 24 hours a day. The sound is coming through the walls of my unit. Every time I record, it is not picked up. What settings must I use to hear the music? I don’t understand anything about sound mixing. This music has been playing all the time whenever my neighbor is home since April 2021. He turns off the music when the police arrive and puts it back on after they leave. They cannot enforce the noise ordinance without hearing the music themselves. My landlord will not do anything without a recording. She says I am the only person who hears it and it is all in my imagination. I am desperate to rid myself of this constant noise. The neighbor is currently playing “Suicide is Painless” over and over on a loop. Not the entire song, just that line. He is playing the lyrics on one sound system and another song (sounds like the chorus of a Fleetwood Mac song) on another sound system at the same time. I have tried to get the police to commit him to a hospital for mental illness, but that doesn’t work. I need a recording. All of the information I see is about voice recording. I need to pick up the music without having the recorder think it’s is background noise which needs to be filtered out. What settings will made this audible??

I would really appreciate any input from you or any one reading this that have experience with using this recorder. Be careful about the Stereo vs Mono setting. If this thing is anything like the Zoom H4N, a standard Senheiser shotgun mic will only record 1 audio channel if set to stereo (in my case, it was always the left channel). General rule is setting stereo to capture level differences in different channels, so if you know your shotgun mic can do 2 channels (like in the vid), go for it, but Mono is always a safe bet when hooking up external. AND ALWAYS TEST BEFORE RECORDING, I made the mistake so many times of recording in stereo when I was supposed to record in mono, only to rerecord entire sound segments because it was fucked up.

Thanks for letting me know. I’d be frustrated if that happened to me as well. So, there was a mistake here, but not the one you think :) I’ll do my best to explain. When you plug a single XLR cable into a single XLR port, you have a mono sound. In order to get stereo, you’d need two XLR microphones each plugged into a separate XLR port, and then pan those two captured sources left and right to taste. Meanwhile a 3.5mm TRS input, like the kind found in on-camera shotgun mics, is already stereo signal. Unless the 3.5mm mic you’re using is a stereo mic, this signal will transmit as dual mono. In other words, it will send an identical signal to each the left and right channels of that 3.5mm connection, which when captured, sounds like a single mono source. Okay, so now we have to understand the Zoom H4N. Unlike the Tascam DR-05X in this video, the Zoom H4N has two mono XLR inputs. But it also has a 3.5mm input, and built-in stereo mics. The “4” in H4N means you can record up to four channels at once: The two independent XLR inputs plus EITHER the built-in stereo mics (2 channels) OR the 3.5mm input (2 channels, because it’s stereo). And here is where we discover the error being made. When you set the H4N to record in stereo, you’re telling it to capture the two XLR inputs as a single, liked stereo signal. You’re capturing Input 1 as the left channel and Input 2 as the right channel of a single stereo signal. Then, if you only plug a mono XLR mic into Input 1, you’re capturing that mic as merely the left channel of a stereo signal. So, yes, if you are using a single XLR mic with a multi-input recording device, and intend for it to be captured as a single mono source, then you must set your recorder to mono, not stereo. But no such mistake could possibly be made by following the example in this video. The Tascam DR-05X, like the Zoom H1, has only a single 3.5mm stereo input. And when you plug a 3.5mm mic into it, unless it is a stereo mic it will output as dual mono, and therefore it won’t matter at all if you’re set to record in mono or stereo. Hope that helps!

@@AudioforContentCreators Hi dude, helpful video and I'm using this to get quick started with it for a project this week. Just wondered if I would be correct in saying it should be MONO if I'm using 2 Lav mics connected to this? I'll be using a 3.5mm TRS splitter to dual 3.5mm female jacks, then putting my Lav's in to that. I assume I would just leave it on MONO for that as well?

Where can I find the link you have for learning how to manually set the audio?

Hello , I’m trying to record a DJ set with tascam dr-05x from a DJ mixer Allen & Heath Xone 42 directly to Mac , I follow all the steps from your video but the peak stays on red so the gain into the input is to loud . How should I make it working fine? Thank you for your videos! 🙏🏼

Can you hook it up to a mixer (like goxlr) and use it with streamlabs obs?

This told me what i was missing: SD CARD READER option in USB CONNECT. All I need to do is record my band rehearsal, then upload that file to my PC for work in Audacity. The manual shows nothing about this, only about AUDIO I/F, which got me nowhere. Very simple, now that I know how. Thank you much.
