I've told you this microphone is the standard, that you all should you all should just have one, that's its the solution to all your audio needs....but that's about all I've done right? Today we produce and record and entire track exclusively using the Shure SM57 has the only recording device....so am I going to eat my words on this one? NO!!!

You should do a video on the production of The Killers first album. They only used sm57's on everthing, and a 58 on Brandon's vocal. After they were signed, it was all redone in a fancy studio, but were unable to recreate the raw power and energy. So they ended up mixing the demos they recorded themselves, and that's what we know and love!

PSA from an engineer: It is best to not mic directly on the center-cone while close mic-ing. It is bright, but you'll get some woof a lot of the time. Just put it slightly to the left or right of the cone or pull it back an inch or two for consistently good bright sounds.👍

Great video, I'm an "old - school-er", and long ago, an SM57 was the only mic I could afford to have several of. These mics are bullet proof, and can truly handle any application if you take the time to optimize its placement. Back in the eighties, an engineer told me, that while exotic, and expensive mics do offer nuances for different application, if you don't have the proper environment to maximize their intended use, i.e., acoustically treated vocal booth, etc., that $2,500.00 mic may be more trouble than it's worth. SO thank you for helping the younger crowd realize that the magic is in the music, not necessarily the hardware. By the way, that track you recorded was great.

I teach in a university now (video production class) and I always tell my students to use KZbin as much as possible because they’re so much good information. Lots of knowledge in short periods of time. When I studied audio production (didn’t actually finish the carrier) it took a whole semester to understand mic positioning and with no live examples… I don’t discourage people from studying creative careers, but we live in a time where you can learn everything you need free online if you really want to learn it and put it in the time and discipline. And even if you do study in university for a creative career, still use KZbin and the internet as an extra learning tool, not just what you learn in class. It’s suuuuch an amazing advantage. Your channel is a great example of it

@@G.Man- I 100% agree that finding your own sound is more important then trying to imitate someone else but man some gear just gets so expensive. Nice. I keep two 57s on hand at all times. They're probably 30 years old. I just thought it was my own weird preferences from decades of playing live and knowing which gear has never let me down. Good to see a generation younger than an old coot like me still seeing the value in such a workhorse mic. They're like the Fender Telecaster of microphones.
@hellomate639
@hellomate639 5 ай бұрын
I'm glad to see this, I liked the 57s more than the sm7b in one of the comparisons. I like mics that boost the trebles because it's always easy to reduce treble to make sound warmer because you're subtracting information, whereas boosting a weak treble is like trying to add information. Those "tinny" treble notes are the most important part of making music sound real and organic as opposed to artificial and sine-wavey.

Awesome vid! It reminded me of the time when back in the day (around 2000, I’m old, lol) I owned a Fostex VM200 paired with a VR800 for multitrack recording and when making demos at home, I’d only use one SM57 for vocals, acoustic guitar and miking the guitar cab. It really took everything you threw at it incredibly well. So thanks for showcasing it’s potential!

@PhaythGaming
@PhaythGaming 10 ай бұрын
@@scotmeaney5013 The most important thing to remember is the frequency response of the mic. This isn't always true of course, as frequency response isn't everything, but in this case it's extremely relevant. The main difference between the 58 and the 57 is a boost in the high mids on the 58 and a sharper dip in the highs. When EQ-ing, make sure to tame those high and use additive eq to bring out some of the high mids you lose. Then, use a high pass to take out a solid chunk of your bass, sometimes even pushing into the low mids. Cut around 2 db from 500 hertz and then eq the rest to the voice. This will give you a great jumping off point for a mix and make the mic way easier to work with. (this also makes the mic more similar to an SM7B with the EQ sliders on the back set to bass roll off and neutral. Add a medium wide Q around the 1000 hz range to emulate the presence boost on the SM7B.) I would use a clear EQ to do these changes, but you could also try things like the Pultec emulations in Pro Tools, or any flavourful parametric EQ that tickles your fancy. Hope this helps in your 57 mixing efforts. If you are still struggling, might I recommend using a large diaphragm condenser in your closet. Getting something cheap like the AT2020 or the ART C1 (a personal favourite of mine) and putting it in a closet surrounded by clothes for sound dampening is sometimes easier than trying to make the 57 work. At the end of the day though, you can get everything you need done with a 57, so it's not a bad idea to learn how to make it work.

I was just talking with a couple friends about the SM57 and how it's such a workhorse. I still think it should be everybody's first mic. Even as you upgrade to mics better suited for more specific things, the 57 will live forever in your mic collection. Heck, Sufjan Stevens recorded 2 of his most famous albums with a pair of SM57s and a C1000. That's a pretty ringing endorsement for me!

Hmm, the SM58 isn't a great mic. The Beta58 is better - much nicer top end and less muddy than the SM.
@JunkBondTrader
@JunkBondTrader Жыл бұрын
@@drinkinslim the 58 and 57 are pretty damn close, the 57 a little bit flatter sound, the sm58 with subltly more proximity effect and a broader upper mid boost. Layered in a recording, the difference is negligible. So if the 57 is a legendary mic, the 58 can't be not great. The difference is so subtle yet it has the pop filter, and that's why you always see singers using the 58 not the 57. The beta is better, lots of mics are better than the sm series, but they cost more. The 58 is a great mic, especially for live singing,

Great production , music sounds amazing . The very first mic I ever owned was a sm57 and I like it BUT with some EQ adjustments , I would say the shure sm58 would be the only mic you would ever need . Sm58 sounds more warm, full and natural . Sm57 is bright and sharp when comparing .

SM57s & 58s are the rock n roll multitools! I've done more than a few gigs with just 57s and 58s. I use them in the studio as well.

Excellent video. As I like to tell people, just start making music where you are with what you have. When I first got into recording, we were in the living room of a rental house and the only mics we had were SM57s. And those recordings still hold up to this day. It's amazing what you can produce with a little creativity. Name? Joe Willy.

That sm57 is such a workhorse microphone with little design changes since it was out a long time ago! And it's a good entry level microphone to use anything audio related.

I remember buying for first sm57. It was 100$ and for me that was a lot to just up and spend that much on a mic because I usually bought stuff used, but I never regretted it. I recorded a lot of my first projects on just that single sm57 and if you know how to use compressors and eq you can really make it work. All praise to Shure for that mic 🙌

I always carry one in my bag. I'm an acoustic performer, and I don't use pickups in my instruments. If, at a gig, the mic that the sound engineer picks doesn't really work, we'll try the 57, and it always does the job. I usually don't even have to take mine out of my bag as they already have one (actually they have 10). The big bonus though is that the engineer knows what to expect from a 57. A fancy, expensive mic might be amazing, but if the engineer has never encountered it before they might struggle to get it to sound as good as they could, simply through unfamiliarity and time constraints.

@@AudioHaze hey, does the audio interface we use play a big role here? I intend to get a SM57 to try this out as I've just moved into a new place and I'm not very keen to do any acoustic treatment to my room for now. I'm using the Scarett 2i2, I wonder will it work with SM57? Or is there any step you would recommend to make the combination of SM57 + Scarlett 2i2 work? Thanks! Big fan!

The SM57 was one of the first microphones I ever bought. Although as a voice actor I would have to say my all-time favorite is the sennheiser 416 because of its versatility. Not only can I position the 416 out of the way when reading copy but it's proximity effect (for me) works well. That said, for years I managed with the SM57. At the end of the day I think providing you have a room/booth with good acoustics you can get away with most decent microphones.

You'd be better off with an MKH50 than a 416. The 416 is intended for outdoor work.

If you you add the oversized windscreen it turns into a budget friendly SM7b. Just without the extra functionality. I personally run a Beta 57a with a normal size windscreen and sounds great 🥰. I use a super 55 as well. I enjoy it 😊.
