The Denon X3800h is a better buy. While I want to love the RZ50, it is a 11.1 output and no DLBC. The X3800h measures slightly better and has 11.4 output, and is DL and DLBC upgradable. You can get it for $1000-1300, same price as the RZ50. IMO the X3800h killed the RZ50.

I know its impossible to tell for a while but hopefully no reliability issues and they can start rebuilding the brand. In fairness to onkyo mine was fixed on a recall. Now i use it as just a pre with poweramps but its still my main home theater processor. Hundreds of hours on it too. Never had an hdmi board issue but i purposely went with the 876 to get the higher end HQV hdmi set.ive had several onkyo and integra products over the last 20 or so years and have never been disappointed. I still use a txsr 601 in my gaming setup. Think i got it in 2001? I think about uograding to a 5508 or 09 to get xlr connections and true dedicated preamp because i still run a 1080p pioneer kuro 60 inch and have no desire to swap that screen any time soon. 1080p on a proper plasma still looks fantastic to me.

Hey Gene. You've got a subscriber all the way from South Africa. Great content as usual. About the power consumption rated on the back of the receiver, did you measure the power consumption on the electric wall plug while testing or playing a movie or something? Asking, because I've the RZ830 which is rated 850 watt, however, I've measured the actual electrical power consumption while listening at reference level, 5.1.4 channels using power consumption measurement Bluetooth plug, and usually it never goes beyond 300 watts, with explosions etc. it would reach 350 watts momentarily for few seconds only. I'm keen to know this for RZ70. Thank you

Stuck with a very good feeling about this receiver. Had Onkyo for 15 years and recently got a new AVR, the Anthem mrx 1140. It's now sent back due to a really ugly noise in all speakers (it's not a ground loop, but sounds like it). They've had it now for 2 months, so I'm in the process of demanding my money back. Plus, I was one of those who got the version were it seems the 50 cent fan they have in it, turns on max every 10 minutes. Really noisy. Like it's on a timer, not some sort of a heat censor mechanism. I've seen quite a few complain about this on avsforum. I was actually looking at the RZ50 before buying the 1140, but now I would go for the RZ70 instead and get the separated sub outs too. I guess after 3 months, there would probably not be any respond to this, but I would love to know if you'd bi-amp with the RZ70. If there's any benefit. I have a thought I cant get rid of - every AVR drops power when using more than 2 channels. Doesn't that mean that bi-amping would be a disadvantage on a AVR, as when you bi-amp, you use 4 channels? Or does the Crossover direct the nessesary power to the upper and lower drivers? We'll, you gave us really good numbers here with 130w 7 ch driven. So I guess bi- amp would be very possible on this compared to many other AVR's.

Hi Gene, thanks for your usual great job. I'm a happy owner of a RZ70 since it came out (almost an year now); I must admit the unit had a few bugs with the first firmwares that are being corrected now with the new releases, but it sounds really good and love Dirac Live (with DLBC). My setup is made of three amps, with the fronts driven by a stereo amp (that goes into bypass mode when used for home theater) and the 5 other base level speaker driven by my old Onkyo multichannel power amp (PA-MC5501), so the RZ70 is just driving the 4 height channels (I prefer this setup, to spread the load on the two amps, even though the RZ70 would be able to drive all 9 channels on its own). My height are pure 4ohms and being heights they don't need all the power other channels ofter require, so I've set the RZ70 to the low impedence 4ohm setting, do you still think that it should be set to high impedence even in my particular case?

...... Pre Amp Disconnect. 5:35 - The amps still receive power, from what I understand. I have to assume a set of relays are used to channel signal and power for this disconnect. Gene besides power - how would RZ70 compare to something like MRX1140 you have - sound quality and Atmos channel separation wise? I’m gonna build and office system and wondering if I should get RZ70 and move MRX1140 4K to the office instead. I’m interested in dabbling with Dirac and adding Direct Bass Management, would it do better than ARC with Phase Alignment in 7.2.4 system?
@Audioholics3 ай бұрын
I haven't directly compared them. I love the MRX1140 as I own one for my bedroom system. ARC Phase Alignment and the whole calibration process is the easiest of all the room correction systems and does the least harm. The other room corrections like Audyssey and Dirac are more powerful and configurable tools but it requires more effort to get great sound. The amp section in the Onkyo is superior to the Anthem. It's not even close. If you're planning on only using the internal amps and you have low impedance speakers or like to play at high SPL, than the Onkyo is your choice. If you plan on preouting the AVR, then get an AVM70 instead with a few multi-ch amps.
@Nikita-P3 ай бұрын

@Nikita-P my bedroom system doesn't require more power and I prefer to keep the Anthem in there for simplicity since ARC is so easy to calibrate and it works for that system.

I thought I had found a perfect one box solution at first. I wanted a 5.1.2 capable processor/amp, so far so good. But would like to bi-amp front three channels for extra headroom...this would be perfect, it allows bi-amping front three channels, great. Only problem is it uses the main height channels for the bi-amped centre. Why not use the rear surround outputs in this situation instead of robbing users of the ability to use this receiver as a perfect 5.1.2 solution? Also why do these reviews never mention bi-amp capabilities and their pluses and minus points?

Hello, great review, I'm hunting for rz70 in Europe, but here unfortunately it's 2500 euros after a discount. Explain to me one rz70 1080W class Ab, of which 960W is available with 11 channels. And how does it compare to Onkyo rz3100 or rz3400 class D, current consumption 340W, and they give off what tests indicate over 1000W, how is it possible?

If this can max out a 15 amp plug how do you recommend hooking it up with a pre amp at the outlet? Seems like if you run a 5 channel amp and the AVR it will be blowing the breaker.
@Audioholics3 күн бұрын
@myriadcorp we don't stress amplifiers at maximum continuous power with normal program material. As long as your outlet is dedicated and not running on the same circuit as your appliances or can lights, you will be fine to connect with other electronics in your rack. I'm running two 2400 watt subwoofer amps on a single dedicated 20A line with no issues.

@myriadcorp I wouldn't buy from them. Get it on sale for new through a legit authorized dealer or look at the Pioneer equivalent that Audio Adive often sells at discount.

@myriadcorp I prefer purchasing from Authorized dealers with tech support. They used to advertise Harman products without authorization and got them removed as a result. Why buy refurbished when you can get brand new with good support for just a little more money?

Great video Gene! I got a TX RZ 3100 that I got about 6 months before Onkyo USA closed its doors. The AVR seems to share the same architecture as the RZ70 . 140 W , 11.2 channels, thx ultra and dual sub control. It is indeed amazing
@Eki2743 ай бұрын
unfortunately rz3100 has nothing in common with rz70 only with rz3400. I have rz1100, these are class D amplifiers and rz70 is class AB. These are completely different amplifiers with the same power.

The Marantz SR8015 has been on sale for over six months at under $2000 for a brand new 13.2 channel, 11-ch amp do almost everything AVR. I can't imagine why anyone would pay more for less.
@Audioholics2 ай бұрын
I owned and loved the SR8015 but it's no longer in current production and not a fair comparison. The Onkyo has newer HDMI boards, slightly more powerful amp section and Dirac support.

I have a 7.2.6 Atmos setup. 7 speakers are rated at 4 Ohm (bed layer), and 6 speakers are rated at 6 Ohm (height speakers). These are powered by a Denon X4500H, with external amps for the LCR (because I have to in order to use all channels of processing). I have never experienced any issues whatsoever, and so I was curious about your statement about it not being advisable / realistic to run 4 Ohm speakers of an AVR. Do we have any evidence to suggests that an AVR can't handle 11 (or more) 4 Ohm speakers in a real world scenario where Atmos content is being played back? I would guess that real Atmos content actually very rarely (if ever) demand that all speakers get such amounts of power that an AVR can't handle it. Or? If you do think an AVR needs external amplification, under what circumstances, and how do we tell? I have been contemplating adding more external amplification, but I have yet to see any evidence that it will make a difference.
@Audioholics3 ай бұрын
I was very clear about the impedance switch setting. I never suggested you can't drive 4 ohm speakers with this AVR.
@isak66263 ай бұрын
@@Audioholics Yes you were. With regards to my question on the need for external amplification, what's your take? How do we know if it's needed or not? Is there a reasonably goood way to estimate the power need of your setup?
@demonreturns43363 ай бұрын
Since when does the denon 4500 able to process that many speakers at once 🤔
@isak66263 ай бұрын
@@demonreturns4336 since it's launch. It has 9 channels of amplification, but you can do 11 channels in total (e.g. 7.2.4) if you add two channels of external amplification. I.e. it has 11 channels of precessing, and the two subwoofer outputs are independent.
