I'm French and I'm a decent rock lover and I had never heard of Gojira. And what I mean by saying that is that the artistic team who picked them didn't do it because they were popular in France because they are not. That was a radical choice made by people who were smart enough to know that their idea would bring something that had never been seen before in an olympic ceremony. You didn't get a great metal act because France likes metal, you got it because France gave a blank check to young artists that were tasked to "shock and awe". I was not a metal fan but, like you, I found this act mind blowing. Let's all thank the artistic team for this bold choice because it was truly epic. We will never see that again in our lives.

Sadly, too many people don’t know history of their own countries, let alone the history of another. This performance was part of a retrospective history of France and its culture. Too many people get offended by things they do not understand. And then they throw religion into the argument to try and back up their offense. But this has zero to do with religion.

The castle is called Conciergerie, its a museum now, but it used to be a prison. This is where Queen Marie Antoinette was imprisoned before her execution. The fact that viewers who weren't familiar with metal think this is satanic is genuinely laughable to me 😅 Gojira are a ridiculously popular band in Europe and they are some of the best live musicians I've personally seen, but they also seem to be genuinely good people. They write songs about protecting our planet, and they used their most recent album promotions as an oppurtunity to raise money for charities, including an auction which alone raised over $300k for providing aid to indigenous tribes in the Amazon rainforest who are at risk thanks to violence and deforestation. People see fire and hear metal music and immediately think 'Satanic', when in fact this is a band who has an entire page on their website devoted to activism (and they're literally singing lyrics like "let us rejoice for good times will come 😅). So no, not satanic at all, just four really decent guys who play heavy music and give a shit about good causes. (Also from what I've gathered from reading interviews with the band the concept, pyrotechnics and the themes, including the headless Marie Antionette, were all decided by the Olympics team, not Gojira themselves :) )

The Olympic opening ceremonies are always an ode to the history of the country where it's being held. France really outdid themselves with this masterpiece. Including Gojira in their opening ceremony to embody the French Revolution and the people chopping off the aristocrats heads (the red streamers that exploded out from the building was emblematic of blood) was stunning to say the least. This section was easily my most favorite moment of any Olympic opening ceremony and it did something incredible for the metal music genre as a whole, put it on the world stage! Epic.

The Olympic ceremony was about Revolutions. Revolution in any form. Change to be bette and to grow as humanity - and that's what the sport in olympics is about. Citius, altius, fortius. Sometimes it works and we get gold. Sometimes it ends in blood and tears. It's all a Revolution. And the différent tableau of the ceremony were all about that. Josephine Baker being a black woman performing on stage was a revolution. Getting rid of royalty was a revolution. Accepting and showing our differences is a revolution. It makes us better, stronger and higher as human beings. It has its costs but we will go on. That ceremony was epic on more than one point. Loved it ! Great review by the way ♥

You got to hand it to France, they really embraced their history and allowed a super heavy band like Gojira to open the Olympics to over a billion people! Maybe someday the NFL will let Metallica play a halftime show. Regarding this song and performance, it is a traditional French Revolutionary song that they adapted for this performance. Ca Ira translates to It's Fine and it was sung by the Revolutionaries as a hope that overthrowing the aristocracy would end up as a positive for the country and people. Le Conciergerie (the castle) is near Notre Dame on Ile de Citie in Paris and it was a prison in the late 1700's and Marie Antoinette was held there until they sentenced her to the guillotine.

This epic performance was not only a reenactment of the French Revolution but also a a tribute to the victim of the terrorist attack in Bataclan which targeted the Eagles of Death metal concert. The boat on which the opera singer stands is the boat on the coat of arms of the capital, whose latin motto the "fluctuat neg megritur" (it floats, but it does not sink). Hence the fact that the performance represented the liberty (against the tyranny of artistocracy and opressive zealots).

The castle is a historic building called the Conciergerie, and was once the very prison where Marie Antoinette was sentenced and held before her execution. It's in the middle of Paris on the banks of the river Seine that runs through the middle of the city. The boats you can see in the video normally run history tours since there are so many landmarks right on the river. And almost everyone has a similar history: "A couple hundred years ago, a whole bunch of people were killed/executed here. Now it's a museum!" Seriously, Paris is arguably the coolest looking city on earth. If you don't speak French you should probably go with a tour group, but you just gotta see the place to believe it 🤘

“Ah ça ira” is a song written for the first anniversary of July 14th (the French national day). You should also know that during the revolution, there was a period called “la terreur” (the terror) under Robespierre; and that for a yes or a no, people were put on the guillotine (squic, no more head). There's a reference to the opera “Carmen” written by Bizet, also French and the most performed opera in the world (French culture in the world). There's a reference to the video game Assassin's Creed Unity, with Arnaud (the game's hero) holding the Olympic flame at 1'17 of the Olympics video. AC is an Ubisoft game, which is a French company, and AC unity takes place in Paris during the revolution, a game sold worldwide (21st century culture worldwide), so everything is linked. The backdrop is therefore the revolution, a period of great unrest and turmoil, and there's no way you can stick soft or guinguette music to this performance; and the band Gojira fulfills the task perfectly. Finally, the castle is the “conciergerie” where Marie-Antoinette was imprisoned before her execution. So, in less than 3 minutes, you've got an ultra-concise summary of what brought human rights to the whole planet.

It was one of the residences of the kings of France but became even more famous for having served as a prison during the French Revolution... and its most famous prisoner was... It is a very strong symbol, it is ingrained in our history, I know this song yet it is 230 years old, we must understand that if France made the revolution, it was following social abuses, pandemic, famine, war, taxes without respite for centuries the French people revolted and it remained in the collective unconscious! as soon as something goes wrong the French take to the streets and demonstrate! hence our reputation as a complainer. We see at the beginning ("the conciergerie", former residence of the kings of France in the Middle Ages) transformed into a prison during the revolution, a place where Marie Antoinette was locked up until her trial like hundreds of other nobles! The boat It was a brotherhood of merchant sailors. They managed the affairs of the Seine and developed trade between the city and the rest of the world. It is the symbol of Paris. And I love Gojira's performance for this opening of the Olympic Games. it is the same energy that the people must have released to dare to revolt against the powerful!!

This is Palais de la Cité in the 1st arrondissement in Paris, commonly known as La Conciergerie(which is only a part of the castle). The land it sits on has been inhabited since 5000 BC, and began life as a fortress with wooden ramparts around 300 BC. It has undergone many additions and reconstructions since then, but was finally finished in 1914. What it is most famous for is being a prison and courthouse in the late 18th century. Marie Antoinette was convicted and held here until she was taken to the Place de la Concorde and beheaded. Fun fact, The skateboarding and BMX areas for the Olympics are on the literal ground where she was killed. History is cool sometimes

Gojira played at the 2024 Summer Olympics opening ceremony in Paris, France, on July 26, 2024, becoming the first metal band to ever play at the opening ceremony. Their performance from the Conciergerie, on the bank of the Seine, included depictions of a decapitated Marie Antoinette, and the band played a heavy metal rendition of "Ah! Ça Ira!", a revolutionary song that was popular during the French Revolution.[314] Aside from metal news websites and magazines, Gojira's performance made headlines in many news outlets as the first metal band ever to play in an Olympic opening ceremony, delivering an epic rendition of an old song.

The "castle" is la Conciergerie, a palace that was turned into a political prison and where Marie spent her last day as a prisoner and then at the end of the day, during her trial. She was taken at midnight to the Place de la Concorde (where the Egyption monolith at the bottom of the Champs Elysees) where she was beheaded by guillotine. The beheading is represented by the red streamers at the end and the pyro after that. If you watch the performance from Les Miserable just before the Gojira song, you'll see the Conciergerie used as the back drop. The guy with the flame was said to be Arno Dorian from Assassin's Creed Unity. He travelled from performance to performance during the opening ceremony.

The castle (la Conciergerie) is located at the very heart of Paris, on the île de la Cité (meaning "City Island"). Notre-Dame cathedral is just a few minutes walk away, on the same little island. The whole ceremony was located in the center of Paris - on or next to the Seine river. The castle was the royal residence for the second half of the Middle Ages (from the 10th to the 14th century). The island is the historical kernel of Paris. Under the foundations of the buildings we can see today, there are Roman building foundations*; and below these, foundations of a small Gaulish town. * Roman invaders actually established a bigger quarter on the hill across the river, immediately south of the île de la Cité. It's the quartier Latin (meaning "Latin Quarter") that was actually the living heart of the town in Roman times, before the Middle Ages, and where you still can see Roman ruins - still at walking distance from the castle.
