This place is called "la conciergerie" the prison where Marie Antoinette was beheaded, it is a museum now. There were several paintings during the ceremony, this one represents Liberty, the French Revolution. Gojira and Marina Viotti sing "ça ira" the anthem of the Revolution. I am so proud of them! it was fantastic! sorry I'm French, the boat is Paris's amblem! The torchbearer was the conductor of the ceremony's lore, he represents the character from the video game Assassin's Creed by Ubisoft, a French game developer.

I'm lucky enough to have seen Gojira live a dozen times for more than 20 years, almost everytime at the very front row, whatever if it was in a tiny area or in a Stadium. I never would have imagined to see them opening at the Olympics in front of the whole world, i was so proud when it happened it gaves me chills and tears 🥲

I literally was like the Leonardo Dicaprio meme wislting at the TV and pointing. The whole layout with them transitioning from Les Miserable' into this was a great segway. Singing a french revolutionary war song about beheading aristocrats while performing on the side of the place where Marie Antionette was held and sentanced with a pyro budget that would make Disney envious.. Absolutely Majestic.. Also that guy carrying the touch who was bouncing thru the city and overlooking was Arno from Assassings Creed as the game developer is from France. Thought that was a nice little touch.

The red ribbons shot out at the end represent the blood of Marie Antoinette being spilled after being decapitated by the people in the French Revolution. Marie was a queen who basically went around spending vast amounts of money on herself, instead of giving it to the people. Metal. AS FUCK.

That was Kelly Clarkson lol... she was a little annoying at first, but it's because she absolutely loved it. A ton of people did. On that Monday, their listener count on Spotify was 1.3M. After the performance on Friday it was 2.3M. Last Monday it was 2.6M... I just checked again now, 8/7/24 at 5:21pm MST... they're at 3M.

Gojira sang "ha ça ira!" ("it will be fine") a song from the French Revolution (1789/1799) the song and the show made reference to the fact that French freedom was unfortunately acquired in the blood and beheading of the king and his queen and the Aristocrats and all anti-revolutionaries. Here we can see Marie-Antoinette, le Queen, beheaded. She was prisoner in the "castle" called the Conciergerie before being executed. It was also a reference to the Bataclan terrorist attacks in 2015, "it will be fine" : we will not let it happen. I would like to point out that it was not a question of advocating the Guillotine either, every French person finds it absolutely horrible that the Queen was beheaded. Here it was a question of symbolizing that the roots of Liberty, Equality, Fraternity, were drawn from internal struggles and violence, unfortunately. Hence the famous "Mea Culpa" in the lyrics of the Gojira song. And to emphasize this, the shows involve a boat, symbol of Paris with its motto in Latin "Fluctuat Nec Mergitur" (sail but never sink) which means that we will not sink and that we will fight for our freedoms and their maintenance. Art is subjective so everyone can see what he wants. But this show refers to Liberty.

You know that those words “ça ira, ça ira” were said in an approximate French by Benjamin Franklin, at the Congress of the 13 American colonies in Paris, around 1785. He was talking about the American independence war. Talking to the French. They used those words and created the song that became the emblem of the French Revolution that started in 1789.

Was watching live and forgot Gojira were to play part of the opening ceremony, blew me away, so freaking cool to see Gojira and Heavy Metal represented world wide at last, not the usual focus on pop and hip hop; the live mix wasn't perfect but it was a one shot thing so they couldn't really rehearse that.

Closest metal I ever remember being used in Olympics was 2002 Salt Lake City Games opening ceremony when they used A Change of Seasons by Dream Theater. This was without a doubt the BEST of the opening of the Olympic Games and this band making Metal stand out. This band was already known to metal lovers for their great activism, their lyrics, their simpolism, everything, and with this presentation they broke the INTERNET. For me, the charm of Gojira lies in how genuine they are, they do not want to pose as "bad", in addition to the archetype of their lyrics about real problems, and not about mutilations, murders, nuclear winters or things like that that are a constant of the gender. Added to all this is an enormous technique of interpretation, composition and a real and artistic declaration of principles, similar to bands like Tool, Mastodon, Soen, Devin Townsend Project/Strapping Young Lad or Meshuggah.

His voice can’t keep up, and indeed the mix in itself was also very low, just like Fortitude.. i hope they go the Tool route and have us a great more instrumental minded album. they are singing a medley of Carmen and Ah ca ira, a revolutionary song. Ah ca ira has two meaning depending on the tone and the context "it will be fine" and "That's enough". And we can interpret it on those two meanings :). It will be fine when we'll be rid of the aristocrats, and enough is enough with them.

Was just watching Nik Nocturnal's cover he made the other day again, and this video popped up on my notifications and had to click. Easily one of the most epic live music performances in history.
