This album one those releases that have several different reissues. I have the UHQR, the OJC, and I have Bill Evans Riverside box set from Analogue Productions did. The UHQR, my go to now
@VinylLatte3 ай бұрын
Very true. It would be nice to see the UHQR process on lesser available pressings. It makes me wonder what the back story is regarding these releases. It was announced that these two titles were to be the launch titles for UHQR when Analogue Productions acquired the brand. But that never happened. Perhaps there was a license hold up, and Chad finally was able to release them. I have no idea, just speculating. Anyway, how do you compare this with the Riverside? I heard some folks say it's really close. What is it about the UHQR that makes this your go-to?
@justinrun1003 ай бұрын
@@VinylLatteUHQR is what you said , the piano is in the background, but the box set, the piano is more forward like in the OJC, but the sound stage is wider, which I think is due to the box’s being double 45. But the box price of 900 dollars might seem not realistic to most people, but if you want Bill Evans whole Riverside catalog, it prices out cheaper than the UHQR. The noise floor is almost the same between Box set and UHQR

Good Review... Well we know what we would get from Chad, only the best. I have a BS Techniques(Ortofon Blue CRT), EQ and Klypsch "the fives". I compared an 83 OJC, RE OJC, and an Original. All village van. Even with my humble set up you can hear the grandeur of the UHQR. Every frequency is just vivid and up. When its time for Scott you get full granular Scott, its like time traveling back via sound. Its hard to believe this is a live recording, its really clean. The UHQR is very close to the original(RE 70's), but summer time in comparison. To my ears anyway..

Thank you! It is amazing to think that was a live recording and wasn’t done in a studio. The amount of detail from the album is incredible. They really did a fantastic job with both releases.
@Pflege_Fall19712 ай бұрын
Hi, very detailed explanation, it is precisely this distinction that makes it so difficult for the "ordinary listener", i.e. me for example. A qualitatively "better" pressing makes you doubt whether it is still the music in its authenticity or whether it has been changed by technical means so that it sounds excellent but is no longer what a viewer in the audience hears. Thank you for the detailed, differentiated opinion.
@VinylLatte2 ай бұрын
You're welcome! I understand your concern about maintaining the authenticity of the music. It's always a delicate balance between preserving the original sound and enhancing the listening experience through better mastering and pressing techniques. Ultimately, it's about finding that sweet spot where the technical improvements serve to bring out the best in the music without altering its essence. Enjoy the journey of discovering what sounds best to you!

With this particular release, I would be lying if I said I didn't feel the same. Most of us can't afford to pay hundreds of dollars for a record, regardless of how good it sounds. There are a lot of great albums out there that don't cost a small fortune, and someone could build out a nice jazz curation that includes several OJC and/or Acoustic Sound Series records for the same price.

When you say that the OJC emphasizes Evans' piano, it's not necessarily a good thing. Evans' trio was a true ensemble group, each player contributing equally, as opposed to having a main player with the other two being supporting contributors. One of the extraordinary achievements of the MoFi OneStep of SATVV is that it truly showed all three players as equal partners, something that the AP 45 done by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray doesn't do nearly to the same degree. The MoFi OneStep is a relevation. I haven't heard either of the two versions of the album being considered here, but I'd want whichever does a better job showing the three players as an equal trio.

I read it and I don't believe it. everything has its price. you can buy a Rolex for $80,000 and a Casio watch for $100. all will show the same time. for someone who wants beautiful packaging and a de lux edition, they will pay $150. he has a Rolex in a beautiful box. you can also buy a casio that is wrapped in paper. ojc plays well, uhqr good + + but you also have all the details of the process and a beautiful box. In 20 years, when AP will no longer exist, you will be able to show your grandchildren how beautifully they used to release records and take care of the art of the whole. they treated music lovers very seriously. nowadays hifi companies don't do this. they produce things that cost a lot and don't play like good vintage ones. they sell cables for millions and people believe it instead of reaching for a good edition. everything you hear is included there.

I'm more a rock guy but i don't really get all the reissues. Aqualung, definitely. But how many versions of Gaucho can you have? My $8.00 original RL sounds great as it is. All the colored vinyl and multiple pressing seems a money grab to me. Just my 2 cents.
@VinylLatte2 ай бұрын
I hear you on the abundance of reissues. Some classics like "Aqualung" definitely warrant it, but I get the skepticism around others. I'd love to see Analogue Productions use the UHQR format to press lesser available albums that haven't received the time or attention as others. For "Gaucho," if your $8.00 original RL sounds great, that's awesome! The market for colored vinyl and multiple pressings does seem driven by collectors and audiophiles looking for specific qualities or just the novelty. It's all about personal preference and what you value in your listening experience. Thanks for sharing your perspective!

So the OJC is equal if not better. The UHQR are a total rip off! $150 for one record and it doesn't sound better? No Thanks. There is no reason these should cost so much, its a total money grab. Clarity vinyl actually costs less than black vinyl. Last time I checked quiet is quiet. I have tons of records that were cheap that have a very quiet noise floor. There is no such thing as quieter than quiet. If you want to buy a big box noone wants for $115 than go ahead.
@VinylLatte2 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I totally understand where you're coming from. It's important to note that the UHQR and the OJC offer different listening experiences, which might appeal to different preferences. The OJC does a fantastic job of highlighting Bill's piano with crisp, bright details, while the UHQR provides a more immersive experience, bringing out the entire ensemble and even the presence of the audience. It's really about what you prefer in your listening experience-whether it's a richer overall sound or a focus on the piano with more intricate detail. Both versions have their merits!

@VinylLatte2 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment. I don’t see Chad selling snake oil; the releases from his labels are some of the best out there for those albums. I view Chad as a very talented hype man who knows how to boost his brand and get people to buy. And when you’re as good as Chad, you can drive up the cost because people will pay. At the end of the day, Chad is in sales, and his main job is to promote his products. The big thing he has going for him is that his products are top-notch. Whether they’re worth the asking price is a different discussion.

@@VinylLatte You are so far up Chads Back side its not even funny. Alot of people think his releases are good but not the best out there. I sold a few records I bought from him because they didn't sound as good as the original that costs less. Chad so talented he can charge what he wants? Good luck with that. I guess as long as he has people like you pushing the FOMO he might even think that. You are part of the problem . With your videos pushing the FOMO are terrrible. I thought I was done with you but you had to reply to a comment made a week ago. The comment was to me not you. But you couldn't help yourself.

I don't understand videos like this one. After watching the video, I know nothing more than what I knew before watching it as to which version I might like better. Why not play a few clips to compare and contrast? It all boils down to the old axiom, "Don't tell me, show me."
