The Timbre Wolf can be circuit bent and it is awesome. Next time I can find one for 200 or less out the door I will pick it up and circuit bend it. I did one in the past and made it semi modular with 44 patch points.

i only have the pleasure of the one animal, the og. purchased out of intrigue in 2016 it had been in deep hibernation. all truths and past stone throwing aside. out of its den was awakened the rhythm wolf, only recently. i suspect the result of a powerful, uprising spring. and indeed it is pure unfettered joy. yes, some knobs have questionable purpose. still, pure joy. like a panelled clock radio that really knows the time. joy.

I've been an InMusic employee at that time and when they showed us these three little beauties we (me and nearly all other collegues with a professional audio backround) were just: "They can't be serious with this." - But they were. Poor Dan, I can just imagine how these concepts looked at their early stage before the beancounters started cutting corners ending in the devices that everybody knows.

I bought the Tom Cat and Timbre Wolf new from Guitar Center when they were blowing them out. The combination of price and my curiosity made it irresistible. This then forced me to explore them and I eventually fell in love with these quirky little beasts. Not long after I found a mint condition box and everything Rhythm Wolf. I’ve got a fair amount of other nice gear, but I still love the immediate fun and warm sonic landscapes these animals provide. They very quickly force you into creation of musical ideas rather than tedious sound design.

I've got the Akai Rhythm Wolf. Before anyone mocks me, It was given to me by someone who's husband had passed away. It had never been used. All he'd done is mod it with separate outputs for each sound, and a couple of other mods. Then he must have turned it on, and realised he'd wasted precious moments even bothering with it. That said, a bit of EQ and it's only borderline terrible.

I was at the Messe in 2014 when the Rhythm Wolf was first shown and it became quite clear it had no other purpose than p*ssing on Roland's parade as they were presenting the first Aira products there (the TR-8, TB-3, VT-3 and System-1). It was clearly unfinished, it didn't play any sound but a lot of people got really stoked for it because it was true analog while the Airas were digital which made a lot of people pretty unhappy back then. A lot of people really believed Akai therefore "won" the Messe even though their machine didn't make a single noise. Now, 10 years later, the Roland range is well loved and still going strong, while these Akais are mainly meme fodder. Fun times!

Rhythm Wolf and Timbre Wolf honestly always seemed fine, especially for the prices. Tom Cat was obviously nonsense, but whatever. Actually totally DOES reminds me of the DrumBrute, perfectly fine but people gotta be cry babies about everything. You don't see anywhere near the same amount of crying about the existence of the M4000D: a $240 Fatar TP/40 keybed in a $50 metal box that gigantic all to house what amounts to a Raspberry Pi rompler for $2800, but actually sounds worse than a E-mu Vintage Keys from the 90s.

As a cabinet maker, I'm surprised wood isn't used more on the sides of synthesizers. Two scraps of walnut and a splash of furniture polish? Costs less than a single moog-style pot knob, but you can probably add 100€ to the price of the synth. Jokes aside, it is a pretty rational way of building a box for electronics : stamped and screen-printed sheet metal that is bent/folded in one direction. The wood closes up the sides and provides stability and as raised stands for the box. Add a bottom plate for access. This can be produced out of a small workshop with a few machines, or you can order a few dozen units from your local metal- and wood shops. Manufacturing moulded plastics require a huge facility and large production runs to be profitable.

I own all 3! I do believe they are future classics or will at least be sought after in the future. They will last long of taken care of. Also, there ARE Easter Eggs in these synths. One example is that the rhythm Wolf, when you take a MIDI cable and connect its MIDI out to its input, the synths audio out sounds beefier but less aggressive, like it’s a different waveshape. Just one tiny example for all the skeptics. Akai Wolf Pack for life! ❤

great video! i had always heard these were bad but wow i didn't know HOW bad x_x I think the nicest thing i could say is that if you don't wanna fork out $2000+ for a Pearl SY-1 Syncussion you could get these drum boxes for far cheaper, but im really struggling to think of a use case for the Timbre Wolf that isn't "real simulated wood doorstop"

Epic jams with underwhelming features.. this was actually my first step into synth-land. Owned both a TomCat and Timbre Wolf. Quickly returned the Timbre Wolf though. The sequencer was surprisingly useful. I liked the fill/transition-bank.

I love my Timbre Wolf. Four multi-timbral oscillators, individual out for each, cool sequencer, it looks badass and awesome side panels. I just run each line through external filters. Every single time that someone who doesn't know much about these things comes and checks out my gear, they always gravitate towards the thing. It's weird.

A friend of mine is all about boxes that make sounds... Drum machines, groove boxes, desktop samplers, etc. Anyway, he has the Rhythm Wolf and I borrowed it because I played one back in the day when they came out and quite liked the kick. I then sampled the crap out of it and handed it back to him. He's since told me he's acquired a Tom Wolf. I plan on doing the same. In summary... Great for sampling and then sound designing from there and not so great for using on their own.
