One trick that sometimes works for certain chord triggered sequences is using arp also but at different division from the sequencer. And I do like being able to edit the start and gate time of each note per step.

Say what you will about Korg, they are the current kings of digital synths. Korg offers a wavetable, FM, and vector synth. Compare that to Yamaha which has a few FM synths, and Roland that pretends their linear arithmetic synthesis never happen.

i LOVE my OPSIX. For easy subs, just have a sine wave on the first operator, bring it down just passed the point you can hear it. then use an algorithm that keeps OP1 away from any modulators, and then build crazy complex wave folding/FM madness with a steady sub. Secret weapon for quick Subs when a song needs it in certain sections :)

Until you start facing all the bugs it comes bundled with. I didn't expect this low quality software from Korg, no Undo, no bank organization, defective program change, mandatory access to user private documents, developers laziness in all its glory. Sharing "native" doesn't mean all "native" software products developed by KORG are even in the same feature or quality universe, but more like a weird multi-verse where everything went wrong. It's cheap, sure, and even more when I re-sell this license.

What’s wrong with the envelopes? I’m curious
@deanwalliss8739
@deanwalliss8739 17 күн бұрын
@@javiceres The DX7 envelopes have 4 rates and 4 levels. ADSR envelopes by contrast have 3 rates (AD and R) and one level (S). The practical difference is that complex envelopes let you make really nuanced sounds. This is especially important in FM synthesis because each operator has his own envelope, and changes in envelope dramatically affect the timbre of your patch.

Lightweight synths are getting out of hand. I had a Roland VR-09 for some years and one of the reasons I ended up selling it was it kept sliding all over the keyboard stand. Granted, I might have been a bit aggressive with palm glissandos and other shenanigans. BTW the VR-09 would be a great candidate for a Bad Gear episode but I’m afraid it does too many things and is maybe too vanilla for this show. But man, that iPad editor was frustrating… Plenty of annoying stuff on that keyboard.

Nothing wrong with the sounds or the controls, this is I guess as much of an approachable FM synths as can be. The keybed is atrocious, literally toy keybeds are better. Totally agree about the form factor. I have a WaveState and Modwave. They dont fit properly in my keyboard rack and take up a huge amount of desk space due to the nearly useless keyboard. A desktop, keyboard-less version would be MUCH better--I'd choose it even if the price was identical to the current one. As for the OpSix, it sounds great and it's pretty easy to use as FM goes. But I have the FM engine in the Kronos, the FMX engine in the Montage and many powerful VST options like Cherry Audio Sines or Arturia DXV. It's really hard for me to justify another very similar 6-op FM box--especially with only 32 voice polphony and a big footprint.

i absolutely love FM synthesis, and OpSix has a KILLER sound engine, one of the best when you allow for a voice to be swapped with a COMB FILTER!!! (ie, physical modelling) But the instrument is horribly flawed bc you can't automate the levels in the user matrix algorithm, and it has FUCKING ADSR???? WTF???? why did they not do rate/level envelopes???? WHYYYY!!!! 😢😢😢 So you are forced to use the software VST, which has the same issues, but you can use midi control in your DAW to automate amplitude and levels manually. But wtf. Why Korg??? It is a beautiful concept which was circumcised by lack of community input. This could've been the greatest FM synth ever if they fixed those two glaring flaws.

You can use it without FM if you want! Each "operator" can be used straight up as an oscillator. 6 oscillators! Or 3 oscillators being run through 3 different separate filters (operators can be turned into filters, wave shapers, or FX!) that's without even touching the actual onboard filter and FX section

Yeah! My beloved OpSix made it onto Bad Gear! 😊 Yes, it‘s kinda sad that Korg cut some corners on the hardware, but it‘s such a powerful synth nonetheless. 6 OP FM is plentiful is it is, but having the other operator types opens up so much more. For example, i love to build a modulator construct with Ringmodulators and then use this to modulate a FM carrier. Use all this with the user algorithm and you‘ve got yourself a little polyphonic modular-like synth. Everytime i turn it on, i discover some new sounds and loose myself in it. I just love this synth!

I think that Korg is starting to realice that these while yet fun but cheap feeling "gadget" synths really are a waste of space as a hardware synth unless they put at least a decent keybed in them. For me both the Wavestate and Opsix is a waste of money as a standalone synth, when Korg already present them as software. Even the software versions is a bit overpriced at least you can play them with a controller of your choice instead of those subpar mini keybeds. The Wavestate SE is prove that I was right about my initial mixed feeling about Korgs mental state. I was absolutely gutted when they released the Nautilus with the same keybed as the Kronos, but without a 5$ aftertouch strip and stripped away all the tactile controls and buttons of the Kronos. They seem to have learned nothing in the last 30 years. I still remember how bad the first touch display presented in a Synth was recieved and how laggy the Trinity was, why you want normal buttons and controls on a keyboard. The touch display and menu's is fine when programming it, but for live play you need those buttons , faders and controls. The Opsix and also the MOD7 engine of the Kronos/Nautilus is nice updates, and so is Yamaha's own FMX engine if you are a fan of FM synthesis that brings the 40 year old tech into modern perspectives, but please stop using crappy keybeds. Yamaha does the exact same thing with a really subpar keybed in their MODX line, which is really horrible when you know Yamaha have provided keybeds for tons of other brands for the last 5 decades because it was the best you could get.

Then 3 of my friends all had defective units... Then GuitarCenter canceled my order a week later due to an obscene amount of people returning them due to being defective and failing. Haha was such mess! Originally was SO upset I didn't get one, then my dog got sick and had vet bill of, wouldn't ya know, it like $350 - the price of the Opsix sale that I missed on. @@RebeccaTurner-ny1xx it's almost like the point of this series is to address gear that has had a visceral/mixed reaction and try to be as objective about is as possible, not make a grand declaration that the gear is shit. All the criticisms in this video are fair in terms of calling it bad gear: amazing sound engine, streamlined and intuitive sound design, a terrible keyboard, no aftertouch, limited sequencer, no multi timbral patches. Those are all deal breakers for many people, hence 'bad gear'. I love my Opsix.
@RebeccaTurner-ny1xx
@RebeccaTurner-ny1xx Жыл бұрын
@@whahappend8222 I don't agree that the OpSix is bad gear. The same level of criticism would apply to any other electronic musical instrument. The Roland Jupiter 8, for example, not only had no aftertouch on its keybed, but no velocity either. So is that also bad gear? It's hard to imagine any synth or drum machine that wouldn't qualify, making the label meaningless, perhaps apart from the most expensive, such as the Arturia Polybrute, Waldorf Quantum, Moog One etc. A 'deal breaker' for most of us is price above a certain level, making those three synths 'bad gear' by your definition.

The opsix could be turned into exactly that if korg really wanted to. They don't want to. Synth companies know you havec to strategically hamstring instruments so that the user is tempted to buy the whole synth ecosystem just to cover the bases missing in his current setup. There is a monetary incentive to never make the End of All Synths Synth.

@@d3tuned378 All they needed to do, IMO, was use a CPU that was adequate for the advertised features, multi-stage EGs, AND house it in a desktop form-factor instead of tacking on a cheap non-aftertouch keybed. A desktop form-factor would have helped with rigidity, too; as it is I can actually lightly twist the entire enclosure.

I've listened through the jams a few times to understand what it's capable of better, and yeah, every time that lead comes in, I've listened to it at least twice to listen to both the lead itself and the context it comes in (the other more midground and background sounds in that section) that lets it stand out so well while still supporting it. I saw the channel pop up in my recommendations, and at first I was a bit turned off by the negativity implied by the name (I wasn't looking to be discouraged from something I was also excited about), but I'm so glad I did eventually click on it.
