@rlm447111 күн бұрын
@lalalaLaFlex I know you're joking, but I do sometimes think that these music production videos mostly just enable people to make mediocre paint-by-numbers music. It's so easy now to hear a song, look up a video on production techniques for that song, and make something very similar. There's nothing wrong with that as an exercise, but if that's all you do, where is the expression and creativity in what you're doing?
@codexstudios7 күн бұрын
@@rlm4471 That's just a personal failing of the people making music. Creative people will be creative and expressive, no matter the education they consume or tools they use. In my experience, developing a style came from "oh that sounds cool, i wanna make that", failing, then improving that "failure" into something great that barely resembles the inspiration.
@rlm44717 күн бұрын
@codexstudios What if you never experienced the failure part? What if you set out to emulate something, found a tutorial, and then figured out now to emulate it? Then you would have been less likely to develop your own style.

I only have one hack and it only works for me. (never heard of anyone else doing this) - I start everything with a drone. Right at the beginning, just after power up, I pick a note that aligns with my feelings... it might be high or low or sharp or a little flat, but I pick one. I sustain it at a low level of volume, and maybe have it fade and comeback every 16-24 measures or so (maybe add some fuzzy noise to the top end?) if I'm feeling fancy. Then I build everything on top of that... click+drums, melody, bass & accents. Eventually, the drone falls into the background once there are 5-6+ layers on top. You don't even hear it, really. When my mix is complete, sometimes I keep the drone, and other times I just nuke it. I use the drone because I need both 1) something consistent and evocative to push against at the beginning, and 2) something to build melody on top of without having an idea for what my bass-end melodies will support. If I don't use a drone I just get a mess I don't like 80% of the time.

Man.... As a jazz bass player who has gotten into electronic music the past few years the "Giorgio" hits home. It used to be so difficult for me to just program a bass line that is just root notes over and over again. It hurt my soul. Many "technical" guitar/bass players start into electronic/synth music and try "real" licks and Jaco/Ray Brown like bass lines and you just have to at some point realize that it just doesn't work. Like you said, Giorgio Morodor's bass lines were rhythmical sound for an actual bass player, but had very simple note complexity, and it works so well. There's a reason no one is doing house stabs over Birdland or trance pads over Hatian Fight Song. It took me so long to realize the sound and placement is infinitely more important than note/chord complexity for electronic music.
