okay - I keep dropping this places but nobody ever picks it up - Metasonix is a company that makes very interesting tube based effects, synths, and drum machines (among other...things). They're the sounds everyone has heard but doesn't really know they heard them, where they are coming from, and/or how they're made. If you've heard NIN or Deadmau5, you've heard Metasonix.

I was a musician in the 2000s and the emx-1 song mode was how I programmed all my tracks. I would send the midi out to run different synthesizers. People don’t realize that that the emx1 was only made to do one thing well, which is a specific sound of mid to late 80s EBM/industrial. That’s it. Not even the designers of the machine seem to understand this. That’s what it’s excellent for. And that’s what I did with it. Thank you for your time.
@dynasoar5Күн бұрын
You have to go 100% in on that kind of mentality when programming with it, otherwise it’s going to suck.

Song mode (or pattern chain mode) is very useable on this machine. Add programming mutes and motion recording over chains of 8 bar patterns can lead to a lot more variation than casuals realize.

This is one of the first bits of “proper” gear I ever bought, after a microkorg and 8 track recorder. I learned this thing inside and out. It can be an inspiring song crafting tool. I’d record live takes, muting and unmuting parts in a continuous 8 bar loop. Some of the synth engines are capable of unique sounds, the delay fx are decent, and the drum samples are very useable esp w a little added grit from the fx section or the tube drive.

@noiseloader2 күн бұрын
The secret sauce to the Korg EMX lies within its noisy compressor. Put it as the last effect in the chain, max out the sensitivity and smash all the synth and drum parts through it (except sub bass and low kicks). Make sure you turn down all the parts to around 20 volume but it completely opens up the synth engine and you can make the filters scream (with a bit of drive). Some of the oscillators can get absolutely filthy!

Great video! I bought my first Electribe, an ES-1, way back in 1999 brand new for about 300 dollars. It was my first serious sampler with a nice built in sequencer and decent built in effects. The thing is built like a tank and I still use it to this day mostly because I prefer hardware over software and you can put songs/beats together on it really quick and its just plain old fun to use. Later (2008/2009), I added an ESX-1 and EMX-1 to my rig. Quite often I'll use all three together MIDI'd up, and its a blast! Like the first generation Tribes, the ESX and EMX are also built very solid. I've tried to take very good care of all three since the first day I bought them, and they work just as good now as they did then. I never had any issues with knob jitters or any of the other things that people commonly report, thank goodness. One thing is for sure, I love them and will never sell mine!

Also, if you hold down Shift+Pattern Set, you can select any number of the 16 visible slots for instant pattern chaining. Furthermore, if you mangle your pattern beyond all recognition, you can hold Shift+Pattern to toggle between the new mutated version and the original, saved pattern in real time.

one of my favourite pieces of gear, and mine comes w an extra fun story. It was a surprise birthday gift by my parents about 12 years ago. (I just started making music but only babysteps in ableton) when my dad happened to see this blue shiny beast abandoned on top of a container at the scrapheap. He thought it looked as an interesting piece of hardware and good to just throw away. He's an electrical engineer so made his own power adapter (it has a pretty non-standard power supply connection) for it and the beast was alive. It did have the well-known jitter issue but I fixed it w/ the bakingsheet trick I found online. No issues since then (3 years already). I sequence it with digitakt and one of my fave things to do is using the percussion pcm sample patch in the synth section - lots of fun to work with the filter/drive/glide functions on perc. One thing I still need to figure out, is to properly send program changes from the DT to the EMX1. It's really annoying as it always does the 4 3 2 1 countdown after it received a program change and before actually changing to a diff pattern. Doing so the emx is always a bar too late w the right pattern, while already playing the new sequence. If anyone knows a workaround lemme know!
@hella_hels21 сағат бұрын
The workaround is to try sequencing the digitakt with the EMX. Bonus your patterns can be 8 bars if you want. But I get it. Im getting deeper into syntakt so I understand if you can flow in the elektron sequencer. I wanna know how to “see” notes playback in keyboard mode on my syntakt the way you have easy visual feedback on the EMX of which notes are actually playing.

I love the 'unfortunate routing' on these bc you can use it quite purposefully but it will always have the old gear crunch, tubes help lean into that in a nice way. Picked up a Deluge recently, everything else I owned before it was this era - whatever had a chance of showing up in a pawn shop real cheap. Really loving the deluge so far. You didn't mention the two biggest problems with this unit: encoder jitter - you turn the knob and values randomly go up or down and paramater 'ghosting' - you touch the strip or buttons and the parameters go crazy. I had 2 units that did this. I kept the second one and neglected it for years due to these problems. A couole months ago I finally decided to do something about it and just fixed it myself. For the encoder if you carefully take it apart, just clean it with ipa and put it back together. For the 'ghosting' I tried partchment paper between the circuit boards but that didn't work. I finally had success with a thin silicone cutting matt that I trimmed to fit between the top and bottom of the machine and I have been in beat-making heaven ever since!

six years after replacing this with a digitakt I still haven't been able to make things with the digitakt that I could with the emx. a shame, because I was never able to make good clean sounds on the emx. i guess I sold too soon before developing the skills. i even replaced the tubes with vintage 1970s ones that improved the sound a little bit. the stock tubes distorted in an unpleasant way for me.

Im slowly learning to love syntakt, but there are many ways this EMX does things right in terms of workflow. Like elektron just implementing 8bar patterns? 20 years too late.

Entertaining and informative- and I've kinda always wanted the EMX, especially after seeing the legend that is Mister Bishi using one like a boss!

Was just thinking about Mista. He certainly has mastered the korg boxes. Hope he’s moved on from whatever was troubling him when he got kicked off hospital.

The real fun of this machine is using the ribbon/arp to "hijack" a melodic sequence to add live variations to a lead. And you can out that MIDI-wise to get that performance on a synth with more in depth sound design capability. Also really great for hands on noise/effects performance too. Really miss mine, but sold it for like twice what I paid for it when I needed the cash. oh, and A+++ for the Jacob's Ladder sample at the end of the video!

The EMX1 is one model that did tempt me back in the late 2000s when I lived in the (American) Midwest. Of all things, what made me curious about it was hearing it used in a praise and worship context. This Christian rock band that I auditioned for as a drummer in 2008 had a drummer who was about to make his exit. There was one song on which he activated a sparse drum pattern on this baby and played ambient synth pad tones from its trigger buttons. That momentarily struck my fancy, but I did not go forward with trying to grab one. The indecision of red versus blue got in my way, along with budget matters.

I own a SmartCard version and still use it. It is a fantastic unit with flawless workflow, super fast and has a unique sound. Love this thing and hope Korg will issue a proper new generation for it one day.

I would like to point out that in East Germany, an entire scene called „Hardtekk“ emerged from the sound of the Korg Electribe series. This scene has existed for a good 20 years and is still alive today. Truly remarkable. 🙏🏼

Price 800e, 18 minutes after Bad Gear $1400 on reverb. The economy is working. Sorry still bitter about the TB-3
