Me; Slaps the roof of KZbin channel, realizes its a soggy cardboard box in an ally. "oops" at least i have some bad gear in this box with me, puts on headphones is magically transported to a serene grassy valley sitting on a tree stump tapping the pads like a while animals groove to my beats like a Disney princess.

Each pad can be assigned to midi note of your choice. Mute all drum sounds, and use 626 as a midi note sequencer to any midi synth. That’s how I used it in 1987.

Did the same with the TR-505. Always annoying that it sent note offs right on top of the note ons though, so note length expression was me playing with the release in real time.

I have a very surprisingly romantic attachment to Roland TR-626. Its very dry 8-bit sound becomes alive with experimentation. It's inspired a lot of works with layers of percussion and we went to the 626 with a band I was in from 2016-2017. Three decades later the 626 can make musical romance definitely with the umlaut accents. Thank you for highlighting how creative the 626 can be used in this video. All of the jams really hit hard.

I love your channel, you’re such a goofball. I got a 626 about six months ago and I love it. These old machines stand the test of time, when treated nicely, and I like how you commented about the sound versus a drumbrut. No character in the new machines, and these old Rolands sound fantastic run through proper effects!

If you have a 626, def do the HKA Design mod, which is a ROM expansion. "Bank 1 covers LinnDrum and LM-1 sounds, Bank 2 covers DMX and TR-707 sounds, Bank 3 covers TR-909 and TR-808 sounds, and Bank 4 is the original factory sounds." DMX and LinnDrum samples sound SO great through the 626.

Had one, and the internal mixer of the 707 was really missed, especially for muting. It’s pros were the tuning, and per instrument accent which was amazing for techno with the toms and hats. If I find one again for a good price, I might hop on it, because it was inspiring to use, and it’s relatively compact to its brethren. Looks like the pros outweigh the cons! Great video as always! Brilliant video. In the 80's my first drum machine was the TR-505 then I upgraded to the TR-626. Yes I was in a goth band. I still have a fully working TR-626 and have acquired a 2nd one also in full working order both with original boxes and instruction manuals. Only today I synced up old 16 track reel tape recordings transferred to Cubase Pro 12 with a SMPTE time code stripe and fed it through a XR300 SMPTE Synchroniser and synced up my Roland TR-626 and W-30 Workstation. The 1980's meets the 2020's. Magical day. Now where did I put that black eyeliner pencil?

It was my second drum machine when it came out, and I had two of these. Your review is again spot on, as always. The sync tape feature was great to virtually add anything / anyone to rehearsal or live performances, as putting extra drums, strings, backing vocals, synths, bass, 2nd/3rd guitar or even samples, it allowed to use an audio mix on one output, unless having a multi-tracks tape/reel, that sync'd the 626 on the other/different output just like any other external clock; Great also to speed up or down a tempo at some point in a song. One more cool feature is its ability to play blocks of patterns. [edit] I've used it as a basic sequencer too.

I'm going to echo Omar Hash's comments before me, and I still have mine, usually connected to a Novation DrumStation to augment my R-70. The 626 has a better Midi spec than its siblings, the sequencer has good timing, and as you pointed out the separate outputs and detune facilities let it still be useful for its own sounds too. It's a keeper.

If you want to engage with this kind of UI in 2022 you really need to go talk to someone. Great work as always! Although slightly dissapointed that the Spelonking mention wasn't followed by a meme from Batman

Amazing 👍 you've had a great year ! The young kids might not get this one but those in their late 30s early 40s know this one! Well done audiopilz 👍 every style today owes it's self to the sound of these kind of drum machines 👌

Great episode! Similar to the 727, the 626 was considered a "Latin" extension of the TR-505 sound set. It was hugely popular in Latin house music, particularly for it's snappy clap. French Kiss by Lil Louis is a good example.

Lil Louis also used it in Wargames and Blackout (percussion elements).

I got my 626, and love it! Worh to mention, there's some hacks for it... For a little money, can be boosted with ROM Expansion tool kit. "Expanded sounds The expansion board's sounds are spread across four banks, selectable with two toggle switches. Bank 1 covers LinnDrum and LM-1 sounds, Bank 2 covers DMX and TR-707 sounds, Bank 3 covers TR-909 and TR-808 sounds, and Bank 4 is the original factory sounds."

I think you liked this so much because you didn't have to learn any more complicated system manoevers to get it to make sound! The interface is pretty cut and paste from the other Roland drum machines so it was easy to get down to jammin!

Having the 727 kit onboard was a big bonus at the time, but it still has that thin kick from the 707 to deal with. I actually used a 626 a few times in a shiny Atari midi studio, but doubled the kick and clap with beefier sampled options from a Sequential Tom. The 626, to my mangled ears, was the best of the rudimentary Latin Percussion drumboxes of that era. It sounds much better with some fx to thicken up the sounds, which are a bit (very) dry and crispy when naked. It sounds fine through a 12bit reverb to give it some proper 80s vast room depth.

The 626 is very special to me and I barely even use the sounds. It syncs with the rest of my midi capable gear which then keeps my juno six Arp in sync via trigger. Another neat trick is that the trigger is tied to the rim shot, so you can sort of program arpegiator patterns on the Juno.
