It's hard to imagine a more perfect minimalist drum machine for people who don't need the drums to be the centerpiece of the mix. It does exactly what you need a drum machine to do, it does it well, it's a pleasure to do it, and it does nothing else.

I used tape sync for years. I had this machine when I was young. All I had was a JX3P, a TR-707 and a Fostex 160 four track tape recorder. The tape sync was recorded on one track, and then played back to drive the 707, and the trigger output of the 707 - which was emitted by playing the rimshot sound - made the sequencer on the JX3P moved by one step. This way I could made different sequences with the JX3P and recorded them on tracks in perfect sync. Then I'd bounce and overdub tracks to create a full multitimbral song.

The TR-707 was infamously the cheapest drum machine in Dixons, then the UKs biggest electronics store, at one point. For that reason you can hear this thing all over the UK rave and "baggy" scenes. The KLF used it, the happy Mondays, EMF, even bands that could afford better gear like New Order used it to get the same drum sound everyone else was using. You never forget those sounds. Sure the 808 is more iconic but the 707 has my heart personally. It has a kind of garage band sort of feel to it because of how it was used. It's the sound of a thousand bedroom djs with an Atari St and a 707 thinking they were going to be the next rave megastar. Or some teenagers with new guitars for Christmas adding in a drum machine and thinking they were now basically Joy Division. Its just instant nostalgia for a time passed for me.

Something I love about the TR-8S is that it has all the 707 sounds built in, and the sequencer and mixer are also both great, so you really get all the good bits of the 707 without having to spend a grand on a 40 year old piece of hardware that needs a bunch of other stuff connected to it to be really usable. I do love the look of the thing though. If I had infinite space and infinite money, I'd probably spring for one.

I love the 707. I got mine in 2005 for $35 from a hip hop producer who found it at a Goodwill. It has a big cigarette burn on the face. For years it was my only way to sync din to midi. Try putting the kick through a LPF, or hihats through a HPF and you’ll find it’s a lot more versatile than people think

I did! I used the Tape Sync on a couple of tracks way back in the very early 90s, although with a 626, not the fabulous 707. The whole setup was kinda adventurous: We had a Roland Synth (I forgot which one, though), a Tascam Porta Two 4-Track, a Yamaha SY 55 (which I still own) and the 626 connected and »Trax« on a Mac Classic. The tape with a guitar and bass was triggering the 626 via Tape Sync, this machine was connected to the Mac that played the MIDI signal out the the Yamaha and Roland synths. They were, along with a guitar that I played live, plugged into two inputs of the Tascam, allowing for stereo panning. Thus we archived 7 trtacks on a 4-track, but the synths themselfes played a total of around 6 more tracks. I still have the masters too. And the final mixes. I only regret not to have taken any pictures of the setup, since it looked really awkward with numerous cables flying across the room. 😂

Ahh the TR-707 ... wanted one so bad in late 80's. Found one second hand for $75, but when I got there it was the other model the TR-909 ... which I had no idea what it was - well except for being beige box as well. I got it as was pretty cheap, but when I got it home the drums sounded NOTHING like real drum samples. I eventually got my 707 via a MKS-7 module. By then 909 was were it was at. Funny how every cloud has a silver lining.

I compromised, I own an HR-16 with custom 707/727 eproms. I don't think I could ever hate the TR-707, it's the sound of Chicago House. To me, some of those early records are genuinely magical! Plus, Ceephax still uses one, I'm pretty sure it's illegal to dislike Ceephax.

@@AudioPilz my next purchase is the TR8... because it has 4 routable audio outs and faders... aaaand a magical audio input to apply some digital sucking sidchain compression type effects that I think could be a lot of fun. Actually right now I'm trying hard NOT to buy one because I'm in the middle of moving house and don't exactly need more things to pack. Hopefully no one famous uses one in a viral video and makes the prices sky rocket in the next few weeks because at current used prices, I think they might be one of the best value 'serious' drum machines available.

I bought mine for 70 quid in the mid nineties. It was a bit bashed up, but it's still with me and still working. I did need to do a fix on it involving mine being a later model so had a proprietary power supply so I replaced the socket so standard 12v power supplies fit so my failed power supply could be replaced and a faulty resistor I needed to swap out as even with the proprietary power supply it was always a bit sketchy in having moments when it would just shut off or not power up unless it had a prolonged plug unplugging. If you need some info I'll try and remember what I did haha but it was very simple

'Move Your Body', 'Washing Machine', and 'Acid Over' were all made in Chicago, innit? I'm sure the Detroit techno pioneers used the 707 too, but I've always associated the sounds with some of the first Chicago house records to make an impact in the UK. (Meanwhile, the 727 timbales will always make me think of Stock, Aitken, and Waterman, as they were all over the pop charts just as the "second summer of love" was happening in fields around the M25).

So glad you covered this - I am humbled enough to own all of them, but the 707 gets more use than the others! As you said, the interface is what makes it, plus the individual outs mean it’s versatile. The stick. The stick is THE most sinister stick of all. A gated reverb and you’re scared to go to sleep at night! No 707, no acid trax - it would never have been the same song with an 808 or 909. Interestingly the 727 plays best not with the 707, but with the 909 - the Latin toms through those hard hitting VCAs have a real edge to them!

Ahhhh. The good old days when this plastic fantastic boxes where dirt cheap… This was the main drum sequencer I used in many live sets before I had money to buy an MPC 2000. Trigger rimshot out to the 101 square trough a Russian big muff and a parametric equalizer and you had the dancefloor jumping and pumping. ❤

Back c. 1985, I was writing music using a standard notation and samples application on a Mac. I had no idea how to create drum parts, though, so my guitar teacher taught me some basic rock drum patterns using his TR-707. While I never had one myself and have no desire to have one, it still has a special place in my heart.

Guy I played with in HS in 1988 used one of these 707's to do Erasure covers and I would borrow it to some some Phil Collins/Genesis covers(bad ones lol). It seemed to do the job pretty damn well but you had to know its limitations. Only pro bands and rap outfits like Rodney-O & Joe Cooley could afford 808's/909's. The 707 was the young/budget musician's best friend for that time.

Noooo... Not my beloved 707!!! This has been the center of my studio setup since it was gifted to 17 year old me by my local music shop circa 1989. It's been happily driving and syncing my JUNO-6, MSQ-700, and a bunch of other gear for over two decades without a single issue. Its been the heartbeat of my dawless setup since before dawless was even a thing. Bad Gear?! Sheesh.
