At first it is straight-up like 1973, Phaedra-era Tangerine Dream, but at the last track it sounds completely huge and like you said, VERY modern and in your face. I see this one getting a lot of use in current wave-ebm-influenced electro. Sounds great!

I find it interesting whenever you review something I actually own. I've had mine since they were released and yes it can sound a bit thin. But if I turn the volume down low and stack it with a string sound on my Prophet 08 it sounds more like an effect and you can get some epic strings happening especially if turn the registration knob slowly while playing chords.

Sold my Rocket, but can't make myself sell this guy. Sure, you could probably get the same effects from a VST, but the idiot-proof layering + reverb + chorus brings me back every time. I've coveted a vintage string synth for the decade. I looked at the Streichfett a few times but was never quite sold. This video makes me want to have a another look. That said, I've been very happy with my Behringer VC340 and vintage Yamaha SK20.
@keykrazy
@keykrazy Жыл бұрын
Fellow SK20 owner here. Those two presets we have in there are purty cool lol, but i've also wondered about this Streichfett for quite a while. Glad to see AudioPilz's take on it -- I don't need any more synths these days but it really is nice to see how tweakable it is, as well as the wider range of tones than i'd imagine.
@lo-firobotboy7112
@lo-firobotboy7112 Жыл бұрын
@@keykrazy Very true. As for the SK, I feel like if it had some kind of connectivity it would be a much better known synth. I've only had mine for a few months and have been surprised at how much you can squeeze out of the polysynth section. I like to push mine through a handful of cheap guitar pedals.

Hey I got one of these! Mostly wanted something dedicated to pad/drone FX and it does those really nicely so, job well done for that. I wasn't looking for any specific vintage sound, just wanted the little loops and bleeps I sometimes throw together for effects assets and bgm to be a bit more filled out. It's definitely not an all purpose device, but I don't think I'll regret getting it.

It's one of my favourite hardware synths, the first instrument where I eventually bought a second one after breaking the first (and I still have the first one in case one day I find the time to fix it). I have played a good bit with various string machine emulators and even got the Behringer's VC340 to get closer to "the real thing" and the thing about vintage string machines is they are often way more impressive to listen to, then they are to play. They are kind of a one trick pony, usually having one or two good, full sounds but the other sounds feel just like a cut down version of those good ones. And there is probably a bunch of bands from the 80s who have used that one good sound to death, so don't expect to sound original ;) For that reason even if Streichfett doesn't sound exactly like the analogs, for me it actually wins on tweakability. If somebody likes the string machine sounds (like me) and likes tweaking the sound and making it "yours", they will probably like Streichfett more than an actual vintage string machine. What other Waldorf do you plan to have next on the show? Maybe Pulse 2? (nah, just kidding, I think it flew too much under the radar to be actually hated)

Funny you mention the "one trick pony" argument. I just wrote a reply arguing the same thing. That is: the Streichfett may be cheesy, incomprehensible in it's settings and unclear about what actually happens under the hood but a one trick pony it is not. Turn a knob a little bit and you've got completely new cheesy 70's phaser fest. ;)

Waldorf is one brand that seems to know what it is doing when it comes to defining what a synth should sound like as an instrument. My ego brain says- give me a synth with infinite capability and I'll figure out how to get the sound I want. While the rest of my brain says- just give me instruments that sound good. Then they get into a big argument about the best way to get the sound of acoustic instruments while I glitch out imagining I'm firing sparks from inside a Tesla coil. Waldorf's products are definitely innovative and their outside the box designs fetching the prices they do is probably a good indication of their value. When I'm ready to get back into synthesizers, and get my brain melded with a new piece of gear, I'm hoping for a Studiologic Sledge 2.0 which has a Waldorf sound engine.

Great content as always. As a writer, I am just curious if you are so natural in writing such fat-free, concise voiceover or if you actually write the first draft and then build points/reduce it to the final version. (And if the delivery efficiency is a conscious decision in the whole process?) Frankly, when I want to see a thorough review I will watch Loopop if I want a deep dive into the sonic abilities of a machine I will watch Starsky, but I watch you mainly because of how well-written and executed your content is. I'd complain that you didn't get nearly nerdy enough, but the Stringers are almost an endless history lesson with regards to music, electrical engineering, and culture. Seriously, if you're even slightly electrically aligned, reading about how divide-down synthesis works, and why these digital and analog approximations rarely ever sound right... it's a fascinating journey, leading me to start collect these divide-down oscillation devices. Alas, since the Italians never were known for their build quality, many of these units may never be repaired again. I have an Elka Rhapsody that has a shorted out transformer, and a crumar (branded Univox when sold domestically in the states, amusingly enough) that has a few bad chips. All unfortunately unobtanium, leaving me as one of the few curators of their magnificent legacy on the history of music. Probably a little pretentious. I just like Tangerine Dream 🤣

@@AudioPilz HAH! I forgot to finish my thought. The Crumar is a Compac Piano. Not a string synth, but basically a super thin, pinky sounding synth not unlike a Nintendo or something. Edgar Winter is most famous for using it, with many advertisements in magazines at the time featuring him and his Crumar. It's not a great synth, honestly, but they're still able to be had for less than $300. Loved your jams with the Streichfett though! Very inspiring, hearing those sounds used on something you wouldn't dig out of your granddad's record collection hahaha.

This synth nerds is the reality. As lustful as these old stringers might appear, pushing up a fake demand (prices) these units do fail. I repaired one recently, was lucky and found a chip replacement. It's easy to have a non-working (and un-repairable item) - check on ebay, people selling non-working, "for parts only" - units where many of the unobtainable parts have been salvaged.

Curious about your video editing since it's so much better than the last season of Rick and Morty, do you do it all alone? And please tell me you are having fun since your videos are so rich with to me at least hilarious humor.. Again, kudos to you for putting a smile on my face every time I see a new thumbnail of Bad Gear popping up on my youtube on sad and boring days!

@@AudioPilz it takes me back to 2008/9 when half the videos on KZbin were like this and weren’t churned out daily 👍 big respect, I know too-well the ritual of editing a 10 minute video for 6 hours, just getting things frame perfect and synched to the music. (Though by the end of my time I could get that to half or less.)

Another quality bad gear episode brilliant. The streichfett sounds great and really gives a good string/organ mix I would consider getting one but only because my eminent 310 takes up so much space I’m the studio.. or perhaps not… I can’t stand my minimoog on a streichfett 👍☢️
