Audit reports by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India on the Modi government has decreased. Compared to 2014-18, the average has drastically reduced from 40 to 22 reports per year. In the current year, the CAG tabled just 18 audit reports on the Centre.

CAG is loosing relevance, not only in terms of number of audit reports, but in so many ways, especially in recent years 1. Now the focus of audit is on outcome appraisal of scheme mainly to help the government instead of on financial propriety, 2. Audit subjects were taken in consultation/request of the ministry, instead of his independent assessment, 3. Accepting for redacting financial details (rafale) in Audit reports defeating the transparency and handicaping a meaningful discussion even in PAC, 4.non-hosting of audit reports on defense sector (it started from AR on rafale), 5.not objecting to operation of and PM cares fund using govt servants services, though on honorary basis, and govt infrastructure including PMO, all maintained out of consolidated fund of India... Thus the most important institution in democratic governance is eroding. But who cares? Who will discuss all these omissions to take this to the ultimate kings in democracy (people) who largely are fragile before religious sentiments?

Without an effective opposition, how will India remain a democracy. Unfortunately a lot of Indians are carried by rhetoric and they feel the opposition was a nuisance. The point is what happened to those media men and people like Anna Hazare who had a field day before 2014 criticising and taking the Man Mohan Singh Government to task for various omissions and commissions?. Again what happened to the genre of CAGs like Vinod Rai, who had pegged the loss to the exchequer due to the spectrum auction at 1.75 lac crores and later the allegation itself was proved a scam. Those in the opposition and the agitators who took to the street at the drop of a hat had nothing to fear whatever they said or wrote against the government as there was no question of midnight raids by ED or CBI at their premises. Ultimately a people get the government they deserve. So an opposition Mukth democracy is perfectly in order.

Democracy is defined differently in different countries and being too democratic like india where the parliament and the press and the tv channels and you tube etc. Is a total disaster. We talk and talk and fight and quarrel and think we are always right. If India is not democratic I dont know which country is? I think being too democratic is a failure because we talk more and work slows down. We need some kind of a government which talks less and get work done and Modi is doing that. Most progressive nations are some kind of authoritative for progress like Singapore and even China to a certain extent.
