Amy this is dead on! I've had generals with two casting directors and in both cases, I had a great, FUN conversation that had little to do with my credits. In fact, I learned that one of the casting directors grew up on the same block as my mother! He was so blown away (as I was, too) that he followed up with an email asking further questions about it. And yes, he has called me in for auditions since then.

What you shared in this video is the reason I'm even considering acting. My son took a "look here" photo of me and I used it as my f.b. profile picture. Suddenly out of nowhere I've had more interest than I ever thought possible. Talking with people isn't hard if you are yourself, it's when you try to be something you are not it becomes a challenge. Thank you for confirming what I already suspected.

I like that. Something as simple as being yourself is hard and sometimes uncommon. Good reminder. Thanks for the advice Amy!

And GENUINE. You don´t act it. I am not flattering you. I mean it. Lots of Americans are acting without really being actors, you know. Mostly acting BEING HAPPY when they are not. I hate that, but most Westerners do that, and I think that the western society kind of DEMANDS it, and thus keeps on making pressure on you guys. We Easterners, are quite the opposite - which is bad, too. I think that being and STAYING yourself is always good. And you ARE genuine. I appreciate it. Really.

Amy, I really like you with your simplicity. Once I was chatting with a sculptor and he stated that in art the job is about removing and not adding.

Thank you Amy. This is a simple, refreshing and challenging thing to do because it requires that I believe I am enough, have something valuable to share and just to be willing to be open about who I am. I find it interesting that life doesn't require this kind if honesty but acting does:)

Thanks for this tidbit, just recently had a stage audition for a role in a new play (it's in development). First time I had a chance to just chit chat with the director and playwright as well as other members of the creative team. It was a little unsettling initially. I realized this was their attempt to get to know something about me. I was asked about sining abilities and wasn't sure this was part of the role or not. (I am an actor who can carry a tune). I mentioned that I was not a belter, it wasn't my strongest asset and that just because I am a full figured actor of color doesn't mean I can sing. We all had a chuckle and he shared info about an actor he recently worked with who had two left feet but sang like an opera star. I think all actors try too hard with trying to impress. I haven't heard back about the audition but realize it is still early. Keeping my fingers crossed and trying to remember to just be me!

I have a unique look, it's a blessing and a curse (if you look at it that way). I have to be myself, I'm not the look that lends itself to the Ward Cleaver roles. If I get tapped for a self tape from Actors Access for that type of role I take that as they are not married to that vision so be me, I probably wouldn't get it anyway so why not be me. Thank you again for all you do.

Honestly the hard thing is that sometimes it's harder to talk about your self than other people. With the nerves sometimes you might not be who you really want to be which is yourself because of trying to win the part.

Great videos Amy! Does an actor who auditions name ever leave a lasting impression..for instance where you think back and say to your colleague "remember that guy with that quirky/original name". Just curious if the actor can benefit from that in any way. Again love the videos, keep em coming! Thanks.

I find it so hard to be myself especially because it is so intimidating sometimes. I have met some really harsh directors and producers and I couldn't identify whether or not they did that to see if we had tough skin, or if they truly hated all of humanity. Do you think maybe you could post something about that (if you have already, please disregard this comment as I have yet to discover all of your videos...been watching and re-watching for the past 2 hours and taking notes on everything!)
@elliart74328 жыл бұрын
OK, this sounds like a really weird question, but could being too enthusiastic and hyper cost me the audition? Not in my actual audition or anything, just before and while doing the games after (It was a small high school audition.) I swear I wasn't putting on a show, I was just really excited to be there! I'm sorry for rambling, but only five people are going to get in and I'm not an upperclassman, so I'm really nervous.

Would it be OK to walk in and pretend to get an embarrassing, but short phone call from mom. *phone vibrates loudly* "mom I'm auditioning right now! " holds phone down "I'm so sorry" "mom I have to go" *rolls eyes* "I'll clean my room when I get home, you're embarrassing me!" I just thought it would be funny, but also showcase my sense of humor and acting or would that be a bad idea?
@kimw80565 жыл бұрын
Trey_Dizzle Yes, that would be a *horrible* idea. You wouldn't be seen as professional, you're wasting their time waiting for you to do your audition. Time is money. That's not a very funny scenario, you'd come off as lazy, as someone that doesn't listen and a slob since your room isn't clean. Their thinking would be, "If they won't listen to their mom they probably won't listen to a director either." Just be yourself, and do what needs to be done in the audition, there will be other opportunities to showcase your sense of humor.
@victoriacaine70405 жыл бұрын
I would never advise doing this, it would show them that you are a totally green actor and they wouldn't call you back in. Seasoned actors go on (at least) one audition per day, they show up, do their work, and move on to the next one. Hope that helps!

So, very true. Its like saying your fake. I guess people do this because people are afraid to show their true colors. But, if you think about that, its like saying might as well put a bag over your head. They see the face so they expect a total unique voice or attitude that best fits it. You know. And if I like seem like lets say a gurly girl and I go in and start shouting YO YO YO WAZ UP G! obviously, they would be like what the heck? But it is funny I say this cause I tend to act a little different, as I may of commented on your other post if you remember. But, I'm not like over the roof top, trying be a top notch. And I tend to get worried mostly on my audition moreover then what they would think of me as a person. But I could defiantly say a positive attitude is the way to go. And a smile :->
