'philosophically' speaking, I think that only fools never change their mind no matter what. The entire universe changes, why should not people. I think it's actually the smart people who change their mind after they deliberately start to think: 'You know what, in light of newly found knowledge, I now changed my mind for this or that reason, and I want to move on.' And also, I must say, someone who doesn't waste their time gossiping deserves respect. In this day and age, this is probably the exception, not the rule. You are a serious person.

good choice. my best friend ran into a similar problem. she did undergrad and then med school at Harvard (8 years total). when confronted with the opportunity to continue to specialize again, at Harvard, and continue her education, she made the big decision to leave. She felt she had simply spent too much time there and wanted change, plus east coast winters were getting worse, lol. she didn't care about the brand. it simply wasn't new or fresh -- it was all too familiar. you're gonna kill it no matter where you go!!!

I'm not American so don't know about this, but what is the most prestigious college, Princeton or Harvard? I know Oxford is in another country, but what about compared to Oxford as well compared to those ones? I'm going to guess Harvard, then Oxford, then Princeton. Is UCLA one or two levels down from these three? And what about Berkley, is that down on the level of UCLA?

I have had the good fortune and pleasure of knowing other people who are like you. Just by being yourself you spread joy, elicit smiles, and inspire people to be the best that they can be. I care more about whether you are wearing comfortable shoes than about the particular decision you make about where you go and what you do. I hope you continue to share your life's journey with your 50k subscribers. Looks like we are in for an adventure.

First of all, congratulations on your upcoming graduation! Looking forward to some cap and gown photos! I’ve enjoyed all of your posts and vlogs. As I and many of your supporters have said before and on Patreon yesterday, we follow YOU and wherever life takes you. I’m excited about your future adventures and am looking forward to all the new things you will be doing! There are many pianists who play extremely well, but there has always been and will always be something extraordinarily unique about watching and listening to you perform music. All of your fans feel this and know exactly what I’m talking about. In life, you may sometimes run into people who have different (their own) opinions about what you should and shouldn’t do. At the end of the day as you unwind and sit quietly, you have to be at peace in your heart with whatever you choose and decide for your life. Actually, you’ve always said to surround yourself with those who support what you do. And, I did wish you luck in your application process to JM because you had applied but I am still going to wish you luck as you are embarking on a different journey. Wherever you go, whatever you decide will be the RIGHT decision FOR YOU. I support you! Your music is still your music no matter where you are. It’s a part of who you are! The right people will remain and become your greatest supporters. So, good luck and congratulations are in order! Looking forward to happy graduation pics and what you bring to the world!!!

I can totally relate. I attended a large Ivy league school for 2 years of my undergrad, and after careful rumination, I left for a variety of reasons to a smaller lesser known institution. People are always flabbergasted when I tell them this.I wish most people realize that most people go to these schools for the reputation. Honestly I've had some classes where we use the EXACT same textbooks as the Ivy league, essentially your paying for the reputation. Also, most professors who teach at the elitist institutions don't even have degrees from elite schools themselves. I wish you luck Ms.Poon, although I never did attend a music school at the collegiate level, I'm sure that studying at Juilliard for 12 years has greatly benefited you. The closest to Juilliard I've had is a couple of masterclasses and lessons with alum, not even close to your experience.

That's growth and evolving for you. Everything in life is absolutely temporary. The duration by which you engage with everything in life is but a moment in the grand scheme of things. Enjoy it to it's fullest while you can, with the knowledge that this too will pass. The heartbreak of loosing those things near and dear to your heart is where the real growth and teaching happens. The struggle of life is why we are here. To engage it and grow or be disheartened by it. In a thousand years, humanity will have evolved to be more civilized by your small positive input. And then a giant asteroid hits the earth, total mass extinction happens, and we have to start all over again.

There are many options for such a talented student. Who wouldn't like to teach Tiffany? Tiffany needs to find the right teacher, which is a very personal thing - the School itself is probably not that important. If I had to guess I would say that Tiffany goes to Dang Thai Son who joins the Oberlin Conservatory Piano Faculty for the coming academic year. But there are lots of other possibilities. Anyways, we wish Tiffany that she finds the right teacher and that she will feel comfortable at the new place.

Hey Tiffany, nothing wrong with your decision at all. You're young and have world class talent - why not step out and see what the rest of the world has to offer? I tell my former students (I teach P1-P3 in Hong Kong btw) who come to visit me that if you're not sure what you really want, then go - get out into the world and experience different things. Who knows, the world is BIG, beautiful and full of experiences just waiting to be discovered, right?. Of course you must protect yourself cause there are plenty of nutty people in the world who will try to take advantage of you, but that should never stop you from stepping out of your comfort zone and learning from these experiences, both good and bad. In fact, that's how I found you! A year ago I was feeling kind of bored with my life (mid-life crises I guess) and eventually got the idea that I wanted to start playing the piano again...I had not touched the piano since I was 18 when I studied music in my home state of Louisiana, but eventually gave it up. But anyways, I was just randomly watching piano videos on here, letting KZbin select my next video when suddenly a little girl from Hong Kong was playing Lizst, if I recall correctly. Wow, she's good! I was very impressed so I became your subscriber. So in a way, you and a few others that I've found here on KZbin have inspired me to start playing again and I cannot even express how satisfying it is. My colleagues and even my wife think I'm a little crazy for 'wasting my time' relearning from scratch how to play the piano. But what joy and real pleasure it brings into my life. I'm in the music room at my school every spare moment I have. Thank you for such a good example to others and I commend you for your decision not to gossip about all of your reasons for leaving Julliard. You are exactly right that gossiping never helps anything. Good luck with whatever you choose to do and I hope you find joy in your endeavors! Oh, and congratulations on your graduation!

Wondering why you see this as a matter of "gossip". One can have a perfectly reasonable reason for leaving a school. Why not discuss it? I don't see why you would think that would be "gossiping" or denigrating the institution. I wouldn't worry about hurting Juilliards feelings. I think they can handle it...Go on - let's here what you have to say - I'm sure it would be a valuable discussion. I just noticed this was posted 2 years ago, so I guess it's water under the bridge. I see that you are well into your concertizing career, so I guess you'll survive. I just hope you have continued your theoretical studies, which makes all the difference in the world for your general musicianship. I can almost always tell when a pianist has had in depth theoretical and/or compositional training. It shows up in their grasp of background and global structures in the works they perform.

I think it's great that you're mixing it up and going to another school. You'll get a whole new perspective, with new teachers and friends. And thanks for not gossiping.... Like someone else commented, I'm following YOU, not Julliard, so go where your heart leads, and best of luck.

You are very honorable to not give in to gossip. It just breeds more gossip and vitreol and you are not that kind of person. You are a great person and a great piano player. Good luck!!

Don’t worry about ‘us guys’, you must do what you need to do and life decisions are hard enough without having to consider us lot. Thank you for taking the time to share your life and art with us. I look forward to seeing and hearing more from you in the future. Chris, from Oz. PS, what about NEC?

It’s a great, courageous decision, dear Tiffany. You will be great wherever you go :) the studies of philosophy teach you well to be a great thinker that you are...aside from a fantastic pianist and a lovely human being. Cheers!

Hi Tiffany. Yes was quite surprised to hear this news! But if you've been in place for 12 years, things can get stale. So why not move on - eh? Haven't discovered where you're moving to, but I'll certainly stay in touch with your YT work, cos it's really helpful and inspirational. I'm not a pro - music is a hobby - and am always in awe of people who are a million times better than me! It's good to go new places, meet new people. Even for an amateur like me, musical life doesn't stand still!

Juilliard doesn't define you as a musician. You define yourself. If staying is what you need to grow, stay. If you need to find another path, then travel that other path. It's nice to see that in the year after you posted this there was almost no negative feedback from your subscribers. And also in that year I have seen the path you have taken since leaving. It was the right chioice.

We have seen each other in some competitions in the NYC, but never met. I am a big admirer of your piano playing. I didn't know you had a vlog page. Just subscribed! +1 :) Best of wishes for the upcoming years in your musical journey! PS: I love the final song at the end of the end of the video!
