oh just wait until you learn about what the brain does with color. your peripheral vision for example, physically speaking, you have basically no cones at all able to detect color in the peripherals, yet your brain fills it in. Most people also are unable to see their nose on their face without trying to deliberately, despite being so much in the way of peripherals, the brain just says "na fam, we dont need that, lets crop it out" The same thing happens with lots of other things. Take road signs for example. Over time of seeing them repeatedly, you will grow accustomed to them and be able to read them from further and further away, not because you are better at seeing, but because your brain is filling in the details since it already knows what it is. This also happens with lots of other things your brain does its best to just automate things as much as possible and synthesize them to not rely on perception as that takes more energy, and it has a goal to reduce energy spent

Technically not an illusion, but rather a great demonstration of the Fourier series. Any sound, no matter how complex, can be represented by a combination of pure sine waves. The more sine waves, the closer to the original. These audio-to-midi programs just find a sum of sine waves to approximate the input audio, then each of those sine waves is mapped to a piano note.

I reckon it could be made to sound even more like the vocals if the converter used piano tone waveforms as basis functions as opposed to the Fourier basis.

When sound is created by voice or instruments it is not actually a single hertz soundwave. There are overtones that create a more complicated mix of soundwaves from a single source. This is what gives different sounds their unique.. sound. From the note display it looks like a lot of overtones got converted into their own notes, as we see clusters of notes together that were obviously not part of the original track. The distribution of overtones is also more dense at the high end of the overtone group, which is why the clusters are more dense at the high end of the piano. It is also possible for our ears to pick out individual tones or even groups of tones from other sounds. That is why we can distinguish vocals from guitars to begin with even if they are playing the same note. Their overtone groups are different for each sound and we naturally learn how to identify the differences. I believe this is part of why we are able to pick out vocals from this. We are already familiar with the overtone groups that make up the vocals of the songs, and the overtones are preserved in the midi, thus our ears can pick out the same groups of overtones that make up the vocals. Happy birthday Tim!

For me it goes from not hearing the song at the beginning, my mind not comprehending the "music" i hear, to being able to hear the song in it's entirety when I listen to it a bit more, I guess it's because I've heard these songs a lot so I know how they go a bit more

Right? I never fully memorized Smash Mouth, but I know at least the chorus; it immediately switches from a caucophony of madness to "wait, there's really not someone singing there?" If he's from the city, then it's exclusive accent from the city. There's only a tiny bit of city compared to the rest of the state, and they have a very different accent there. The funniest part of this is that when you convert an audio signal to digital, it's essentially like pixels because we have to chop it up to store it as bytes. In a sense, converting a sound into a midi file is doing the same thing, but at a much lower resolution, so in theory, if you were able to make notes that were much much shorter, you could make a higher resolution version of the piano midi so it wouldn't sound as "garbled" or "fuzzy" the same way that a lower resolution picture muddles the quality of the information being displayed

The secret of how this works is actually very simple: There's functionally no difference between instruments. When any instrument (including voice) plays a note (read: frequency), it's really playing a bunch of other frequencies with it. Even better: All (tuned) instruments share the same prominent frequencies for a note. The Midi Converter just picks the most likely frequencies using something called a Fourier transform. So when you play it back sure the piano inserts some other weird frequencies, but the core frequencies are still the same so it kinda sounds the same too.
