Congratulations on working with LA LUPONE! Diva LuPone is talented, but she TERRIFIES ME and I, just personally, would avoid seeing her on the street or in theatre. Tyne Daly's "GYPSY" is available in full on KZbin--and THAT ONE is life changing for me!!! FOR ME!! FOR ME!! FOR ME!! FOR ME!! FOR ME!! See what I did there? Audra is BEYOND TALENTED-- what NEXT LEVEL TALENTED, and comes across not as a diva, but refreshingly down to earth. She can modulate/alter her singing style; as she proved brilliantly when she transformed herself into Billie Holliday. For Rose, she must again transform herself-- hopefully abandoning soprano for full on belt voice. But, if she couldn't do it, I don't think Audra would do it. God knows what brilliance she will bring to the drama in the story. I must add, I adore Danny and his late wife, the angelic Rebecca Luker. I agree with you that "GYPSY" and "CABARET" are Best Musicals, but may we also add "SOUTH PACIFIC" and "MY FAIR LADY" to the short list of "Best Musicals" as well? I played Mama Rose in high school. It is a very demanding role, acting wise, but more so vocally, and she dominates the musical, being in nearly every scene. Gypsy is not the lead character. Mama Rose is the star of Gypsy. It is flat out a belter's role, with the final song, Mama's Turn, a tour de force. I almost lost my voice by the end of our run, on that song, alone. I love love love Audra McDonald. Her voice is absolutely mesmerizing, and puts me in another realm when I hear her sing. Yet, in my opinion, she is not right for Mama Rose, vocally, as in range wise. I hope I am proven wrong, but I was shocked to hear you say that she is Mama Rose in this new revival. I will be the first to stand up and cheer her, regardless, because Audra is a beyond talented powerhouse.

Same.. love everything she does but I'm also concerned / interested to see what she'll do vocally. Because some things just need to be belted the acting going on behind it and the situation the characters are in

I felt like she flattened and made her voice ugly to match the character. She acted the hell out of it but it's like when Bernadette Peters did it..she made her voice harsh. There are some wonderful moments, but...that's just my opinion.

Thanks, I have tix in a few days. Early previews of course, but looking forward to seeing the cast. (And hopefully major renovations to Majestic). It will definitely be a tough revival race. Seems like Sunset is more of a reimagining than is anticipated for Gypsy.

Sunset is more of a deconstruction, they get really messy and weird with the show. George C Wolf has been very methodical with his direction and casting. Without changing a word of dialogue, a show that has never been about race is going to be implicitly about race, it is very much a reimagining. I'm very excited I think that Audra will come to the table, she can belt, she hasn't done it in a while onstage, but she will bring it What i wouldn't give to be at this first preview

@3:04 that is true. I've only seen the TV movie showcasing Bette Midler but never seen one onstage so I'm excited to see this production since GYPSY is only on Broadway if a grande dame or legend is headlining it. @5:50 I thought of GYPSY plot while watching HILLS OF CALIFORNIA. @6:35 I still wish CATS the Jellicle Ball opted to move to Broadway as I think that revival would have beaten both Sunset and Gypsy.

GYPSY the musical is so layered. To me the triangle between the mother and the sisters is Shakespearean. I always wanted a non musical - dramatic version made with Kathy Bates or Francis Mcdormand to play Rose and be truer to the actual story. They may be too long in the tooth for that to happen now. I was friends with June Havoc. She told me her mother was a psychopath who actually committed murder. June thought the musical demeaned her and glamorized her mother.

I saw this in early previews, but it didn’t wow me. If the Best Revival is between Sunset and Gypsy, I would give Sunset the Tony. No contest. I was bored. The pacing needs work in first act.
