Betty Buckley also played Rose at Paper Mill Playhouse (with Debbie Gibson as Louise) in 1998 and that production was heavily rumored to be transferring to Broadway. It was a sold out smash hit at Paper Mill, but, apparently either Sondheim or Laurents or both hated Buckley's interpretation of the role so much that they banned it from transferring. And that was that.

If you look at video clips of Pearl Bailey starring in “Hello Dolly” ( on KZbin) singing songs like “ So Long Dearie,” then you can see the potential for a supremely talented actress creating an iconic performance when a beloved musical comedy decides to switch the kind of casting that, over the decades, we’ve grown used to.

My first thought was that I was hoping there wouldn't be too many comments about how Audra shouldn't play this role because Mama Rose was white and Audra is black. And then I looked at some comments and was a bit bummed out. Broadway has been doing color blind casting for years, and this show has become so separated from the historical characters, and there's certainly a lot that's not historically accurate that's already in the show. Also, we've had people who were not age appropriate who didn't look like Mama Rose play the role, who didn't have the right hair color, etc. But there was definitely not this kind of feedback. Why not? If it's so important we match skin color, shouldn't we match hair color, age, look, build, etc.? But the focus is somehow always on the race piece, haha. My feeling on colorblind casting is as long as a specific race is not a crucial plot point (ie A Raisin in the Sun, Miss Saigon), I don't see any issues, and it should just be based on talent. Race is not a plot point in Gypsy, and I've seen Audra live and she's phenomenal.
@MickeyJoTheatre6 ай бұрын

@NickyMay166 ай бұрын
Hair color is very different than race. Build is relevant if their body was a major part of their public persona. For example I find it off putting that Louis Armstrong was barely 5'4" and was known for being small and the actor playing him in the upcoming musical is a giant. How lucky for McDonald that everyone will be afraid to be honest lest they be considered a bigot. I adore her but she does not have the right voice, nor does she have the acting chops. That is not an insult as few actresses have the talent to play the greatest role in US theater. Once Daly and LuPone have played these roles the bar is raised very high. Personally I think it is ridiculous to have someone play a real live person and cast someone of a different race.
@rebeccag85896 ай бұрын
@user-sh4mv3tc3r But why is hair color very different from race in this context? Her vocal talent is obviously subjective, but she can belt really well very much in the right style, it just might not be what you've heard from her. Bernadette Peters did a great job and also didn't fit the Merman/Lupone mold. People can and should put a different spin on the character, otherwise you're just doing a poor impression of someone else's performance. Based on seeing her live in Carousel and in concert, she also definitely has the acting chops. But again, that's subjective. You're entitled to your opinion if you don't think she's talented enough for the role, even though I strongly disagree. My issue is saying that she shouldn't play it because of race. Again, as this is so far off from anything that's super historically accurate, why is race different from hair color? Why does it bother you so much? Why is it an issue? There have been so many films and plays have people playing historical figures with different races and ethnicities and religions than those figures. This isn't anything new, it's only relatively new in terms of going in the direction of people of color playing someone who was white. And suddenly there's outrage, when there wasn't before. I'm not being antagonistic- I'm genuinely wondering and asking you- why is it different in the context of this show, and why does it bother you?
@NickyMay166 ай бұрын
@@rebeccag8589 People of other races playing someone outside of their race was an old practice which has since been condemned for it's insensitivity. John Wayne playing Ghengis Kahn or Mickey Rooney playing someone Japanese in Breakfast at Tiffanys or Shirley MacLaine playing an Indian woman in Around the World in 80 days have ALL been vilified. It is not about her talent. It is about her appropriateness for the role and she is wrong for it. Peters was just awful, receiving negative reviews except for the juvenile valentine from Ben Brantley. Rose is a BROAD, not a lady, not a little girl. Mc Donald does not have the mettle for the role but she has the luxury of knowing that critics will be very hesitant to give her bad reviews for fear of being accused of racism.
@NickyMay166 ай бұрын
@@rebeccag8589 And it bothers me because things have gotten out of control in the theater with this inane casting. The national tour of Anastasia had an African-American in the lead role...absurd! The whole idea contradicts the entire premise. The Paper Mill Playhouse did The Sound of Music with an African-American Maria. Absurd. Now if a white person played Duke Ellington, the world would end. And this POC bs in the industry is nonsense. The priviledge is clearly extended to one group 90% of the time.

Another Broadway Rose that you didn't mention was Linda Lavin, who replaced Tyne Daly in the 1989 revival, the only time a Broadway GYPSY has replaced the leading actress when she departed the role. Lavin was my first Rose and she was a revelation. Though she is a New York theatre icon, at the time, I primarily knew her from her starring role in the sitcom ALICE. I still hear in my mind this exchange between Christa Moore (as Louise) and Lavin like it was yesterday: "If I'm the star, shouldn't it be 'Louise and Her Hollywood Blondes?'" [perfectly timed take from Lavin] "Rose Louise?" The audience burst into laughter and I, for the first time, lead a mid-show round of applause for these two actresses as we saw, for the very first time, Louise stand up for herself and Rose give in a little. And the story they conveyed BEHIND both of their acceptance of the compromise told volumes. It was masterful.
