I have a friend who is 89 years old and taught history in 6th and 7th grade for over 30 years. He now has several former students (who are grandparents themselves) come to visit him regularly. He loved teaching, and still talks about his experiences fondly...he's a real inspiration. I have a feeling you're cut from the same cloth as my friend...you will have a great career in teaching. :)

Your video of your new classroom brought back some good memories. I, too, taught sixth grade among other positions during my 38-year teaching career. During summer, after teaching summer school, I would often backpack in Yosemite.

I enjoyed your CT series Audrey. I just retired in May from a 33 year teaching career. Great to see that you are also an educator! I thruhiked the CT in 2016 to celebrate my 50th birthday. Looking forward to doing it again! Congrats on your completion and have a great school year.

Hey North Star... Here is a suggestion that will make you a very wealthy woman.... kinda.... maybe. Create a line of merchandise and call it: "The North Star." Start out small. Use some of those awesome AT and CT photos to make wall calendars. Use a photo for the cover and one for each month. Sell them here and try to place some with your local outfitters. I'll buy the first five. Boom!... And just like that, instant profit. Next, make some t-shirts with "North Star" on the front and whatever on the back. Then, when you're not busy carrying all this newly made money to the bank, you can start writing your book about your thru hike experiences. Title it: "Following the North Star." Eventually, you will make so much money that you can hang up your chalk and eraser, turn in your room keys to the principal, appoint Joe as your business manager, your mom as the CEO and then head off to the PCT followed by the CDT.... maybe....kinda. Uh, one correction: I'll buy the first TEN wall calendars. They'll make great Christmas gifts. But don't dilly dally; Christmas is on the way.

Best of luck with the new position. I just retired after teacher for 35 years. Starting a new type of teaching assignment is a lot of work, I know. I taught more than a half dozen different subjects, sometimes at different times with new curricula. I look forward to a JMT hike since that is also really beautiful.

Hey North Star... It's good to see you back, safe and well. But actually, this comment is about homemade cornbread. Say what? I know but stay with me here. If you've ever made your own homemade cornbread from scratch using stone-ground corn meal and a cast iron skillet and then go back to store-bought cornbread mix, there is a huge letdown. Once you've tasted the homemade version that doesn't crumble apart into a powder and has that signature crusty bottom, then the mix version never does fully satisfy. (I think you can see where this is headed.) In nature, on the trail, we discover the freedom and peace of long-distance backpacking. There we find the opportunity to let our inner child out to play without all the cultural inhibitions imposed by society. There we find our niche. There we thrive, relax and we feel so right there... like we're home... where we're we supposed to be. And we begin to realize that a transformation has occurred in us. We feel like we've become a resident of the wilderness. No longer do we leave society to visit the wilderness. Rather, we leave the wilderness to visit society. When we return home, we feel uprooted and often suffer the pangs of separation. Back at home we constantly wonder what natural displays we're missing. And sleeping is often difficult because the air seems stale, and all the familiar night sounds are muted by walls and windows. Oliver Wendell Holmes said, "A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions." The AT and now the CT have certainly stretched your mind. And just as one finds it hard to leave homemade cornbread and go back to a mix, I suspect that even though you appear well, refreshed and happy, leaving the AT and CT has so stretched your mind that you no longer can fit into your old dimensions, and that the "homemade cornbread" of the trail has become "just cornbread from a mix" at home. Now, of course we all long to return to our loved ones, to again sleep in a real bed and to enjoy the bliss of flushing a toilet instead of digging a cathole. Nevertheless, if you feel that you've left the "homemade cornbread" back on the trail only to return home to the "mix version," just know that you're not alone. I think all of us hiker trash experience that. But at least when we can't take anymore "cornbread made from a mix," we know that all we have to do is load up our pack, head back to the trail, point our feet forward and there, immersed in nature, once again as always, the "homemade cornbread" awaits us.

Good Q&A and happy you're back safe and sound. With the John Muir Trail, isn't the end of it(or the end of a section of it)at the Summit of Mt. Whitney, the tallest peak in the lower 48? Moving to middle school? I taught in middle school for about 20 years, prior to moving on to another field - still miss the kids(but not much else). Good to have Joe and your mom along for parts of the journey. Please keep us posted. Be well, stay safe. 🥾

Audrey thank you so much for sharing your CT hike. I looked forward to each and every posting. You have a delightful personality. Your bright smile is marketable you should send off some some of your vlogs to a toothpaste maker and become a spokesperson for them …. Really think about it. You have the personality, the camera loves you and along with your smile you have a very distinguishable voice that pulls people to listen. I hope you continue to post content even your adventure as a Middle School Math Teacher and hopefully so if your local adventure with Joe & you lovely Mother. Good luck in your school year with your Middle School kicks they will be different I know I volunteer at my Church with our Middle & High School young men & women on Fridays for two hours. We actually pick them up at the schools in a bus 🚌. Love you. ❤😊 God is Well Pleased with you.

Great recap and Q&A, thank you. Also appreciate your listing of town re-supply stops. Have a question about your Mom and Joe's travel back home. Did they use a shuttle back to Denver to fly home? Seems like quite a shuttle distance especially for Joe. Hope you enjoy teaching Middle School this year.

Fabulous recap! I loved that I was on trail at the same time as you even if you were WAY further south than I was. Thanks for all the videos along the way. One day I'll finish this trail! And wait... your district provides you with everything you need?? What is that like?? 😂 I teach in OK and we are 49th in education and our state superintendent hates teachers (and public education) and calls us horrible names daily in the news while continually turning down federal money for schools. I wonder what it's like to teach in a state that supports education? 🤔 Have an amazing year, and have so much fun in 6th grade. I taught 6th grade Science and Geography for a few years recently and they can be a lot of fun!! I'm in year 28 and just changed to Art last year for middle school and am LOVING it. Cheers to new adventures in the classroom!

Wondering if any body pick up the stakes you left behind and try to find who lost them. That was a kool way to scale with numbers how human stool changes on a backpacking trip even at high elevation. What about a scale for a pee color chart. Glade your back to work and a upgrade to teaching math. Wish you a safe and successful year. ✌️♥️💪🇺🇸

congrats on finishing the CT.... any plans to finsih section hiking the OT maybe next year or something? i live in missouri too, in columbia... ive sloooowly been section hiking the OT myself. my favourite section by far is the taum sauk section. awesome seciton of trail and supposedly the hardest trail in the state tho it didnt seem too difficult to me [even thou i got turned around once after taking a lunch break and ended up hiking back on the trail a good two hours before i turned around again and also ended up sliding sideways and falling on my hip... having to limp while i hiked the rest of the way]

Top of the morning to ya girl 🌄😊. Tht sure was fun. So glad u did it. Who knows perhaps u will do the east side next ! Or the Pinholti. There r SOO many to Chose from 👍🏽🤗. I THINK ur guna enjoy this class abit more cuz of the interaction with you will be so different. Thanks for the FUN !!!! Ps .. when was ya born ??/??/??. T mm r u tall ?? Cuz tall people generally walk faster than people with short legs like me😅 🤠. When I was in my twenties and thirties i could easily do 3 mph. But that was just my energy level and not my natural gate. ☺️. What pack did you use on this trip ?? 0 it did not seem to be fitted correctly or maybe the load levelers needed to be pulled in it looked like there was a large gap at the back of your shoulders and towards the top ... Which means your pathway is sitting on your hips. Is this true ?? Atb Audrey !!!! That's a funny story about Joe... Corkscrew ...lol. Reminds me of a friend of mine who went backpacking with me for the first time in his life we're up in the mountains and he rolled off the trail and his legs and arms up in the air he couldn't get right side up. So he looked like a turtle😂😅😮😅😅. So u can guess his trail name. ( But he didn't like it too much😅 )
