Alternatively titled "Rochester Tries To Gaslight Jane" And that "a year and a day" thing infuriates me. He's a bastard, but a bizarrely charming and sympathetic one.

nope just an old, self-centered, conceited, short sighted, self-pitying, lying loser

Rochester's use of the phrase "a year and a day" has always bothered me because that was the traditional length of a handfasting, essentially a form of trial or temporary marriage which existed in some parts of Great Britain. At the end of a year and a day, a handfasted couple would make the decision either to separate or to have a permanent marriage. It's easy to see that Rochester's infatuation with Jane blinds him to the fact that Jane's conscience would not allow her to remain in what both she and the rest of society would consider an invalid and illegitimate marriage -- but what prompted him to use that particular phrase?
@Tattie19883 жыл бұрын
@@OreadNYC That is a great point! Rochester is not certain about illegitimacy of the marriage, he asks Jane whether SHE THINKS he is justified to neglect his marriage to Bertha. Probably he is leaving Jane freedom to change her mind and leave him in a year and a day, if she decided his first marriage was legal, and yet he cannot give up Jane now.
@OreadNYC3 жыл бұрын
@@Tattie1988 What makes this so terrible is the fact that if Rochester had been exposed as a bigamist *after* marrying Jane -- meaning after she'd lost her virginity to him -- the impact on Jane would have been catastrophic, and not only because her chances of being able to find work as a governess elsewhere would have been nonexistent. The impact on her emotionally was bad enough according to the book but she at least had the comfort of knowing that she did nothing wrong. Imagine how that would most likely have changed if they had already gone through with the marriage...! She would have been devastated.

They kept character even when he's messed up her hair.

Haha I know and he does that in several scenes.. I like it, adds to the realism :)

Does anyone else think her laugh is unscripted when Rochester is caught up in her hair? 😂
@MDali-el4zm4 жыл бұрын
Yes! He really messed her hair up in that scene and at the end of it she looked like a street urchin. lol

I think that it was not intentional, and yet they kept acting!!

@@marlenadm5654I read somewhere years back that between shooting, Dalton would take Zelah fishing
@missyadams Жыл бұрын
@@marlenadm5654 in the article, Zelah had good things to say about Timothy. How professional he was and full of humour. He made the crew laugh when he kept making mistakes during the scene when they entered the church, he gripped her hand whenever he tried NOT to laugh. Lol She also said regarding the Jane Eyre adaptations, people remembered the Rochesters more than the Janes

I love how they don't go to bed together until marriage. Such a modest culture back then
@happyllama11607 жыл бұрын
Even if it was set nowadays Jane just wouldn't allow it no matter how eager Rochester was

Hephzi Wilson are you really sure? Habits change with the time, who knows...
@happyllama11606 жыл бұрын
marty mitch marty mitch They do, but I don’t think Jane would be Jane without her incredibly strong Christian beliefs and those beliefs would not allow her to bed Rochester until they were married. Without her beliefs Jane would be some other character and I imagine the story would have played out somewhat differently. Then again I doubt the story could play out in modern days at all.

This is fiction.
@LSSYLondon5 жыл бұрын
Actually that is technically inaccurate... if you look at when it was written in the 1840's... as we have records going back to the 1600's showing couples had been "bundling" before marriage. Thus the records at the time show that nearly 40% of brides were visibly pregnant on their wedding day. FYI. Also the average marriage lasted only 7 years due to disease, death in childbirth and after.

He'll tell her a year and a day? In that way, she will have had his baby and despise him when he tells her the truth. Charlotte Bronte is the weaver of a great tale. :-) Boy, he can have me no matter what!

I hate Mr Rochester in this scene. 1. He gaslights Jane and just lies to her 2. Makes her feel like she’s wrong in what she is saying to him 3. Basically traps her in a bigamist marriage and tries to soften the blow by saying I will tell you but after a WHOLE year of marriage! 4. What a bastard! 5. A cute bastard 6. I feel sorry for Jane a lot here. 7. Mr Rochester is a bastard in this scene!
