When I was in 6th grade I did a book report on “Jane Eyre”. My stupid teacher thought that I was lying about having read it, so I gave him my dog eared well-thumbed copy of the book and asked him to open it to any page, read a sentence and I’d tell him what was going on in that scene. Happily for me, he opened it to this proposal scene which I loved so much that I’d memorized it. The look on his face when I gave the whole scene word for word and then explained what it meant was somewhere between confused that a 6th grader could actually read and understand an “adult” book and anger that he’d been shown up in front of the class. Just to make sure that he understood my message about the “grown up” books my next book report was on “Wuthering Heights”! As you can imagine I was not popular with this teacher! Thank you Brontë sisters!

Great story. Same thing happen to me with my hippy teacher who didn't think I read the lion the witch and the wardrobe. I was mad that he didn't think I read that book in a day, because A, I liked it so much, and B, he thought I wasn't smart enough. Felt good to show him up.

@monicacall75323 жыл бұрын
Thank you CAT07032! When I taught 5th grade gifted and talented for all subjects I would tell my students about my experience in 6th grade. The story never failed to shock them. Unfortunately, I ran into my own version of my 6th grade teacher with some teachers at the middle school my students went to after they left 5th grade. The GT English teacher complained that my students already knew how to write research papers and were reading books like “Pride and Prejudice” and “David Copperfield”, so what was she was supposed to do with them? I gave her several suggestions, but she didn’t want to hear them. The math teacher complained that I’d already taught 6th grade math to my class which messed up his schedule. When I suggested that he teach my students pre-algebra you’d have thought that I’d asked him to teach calculus to kindergarteners! When I was a student I hated lazy teachers and teachers who refused to believe that students could be capable of doing work several grades above their age group, especially when they loved what they were learning and were motivated to learn more. We often hear about the poor kids who struggle with learning challenges, but we also need to talk about and help the really bright students who need to be challenged and stretched.

I just read a book and the describing of mr. Rochester. Personally, I think Timothy fits perfectly! Athletic figure, dark hair and thick eyebrows, not small, noticeable nose… pretty mainly appearance. Book doesn’t say, that he wasn’t attractive at all, it’s says more that he didn’t fit this time standards of beauty. Also he was pretty popular with woman. And Jane said a couple of times that she thought of him as he is beautiful man. I think this series did a great job at casting, because Jane is also just perfect in this series. (Sorry for my not perfect English)

Yes! A commenter who understands that he wasn't "ugly" in the sense that he was hard to look at, but the standards at that time were very different from today's, and the language was too. Edward was a lady's man, but he wasn't the pale, prim prince that was considered a "beautiful" man back then.

I can't imagine any other version ever topping this one. The acting was fantastic and let's face it, Timothy Dalton is one of the hottest men to ever live. Totally in his brooding, dark, handsome prime when this was made. SWOON! With that face and that voice... I'd do whatever that man said, lol.

I didn't either until I watched 1973 BBC production. That Rochester isn't as handsome but more passionate. Their production hit the novel on the nail as Jane narrates her story. It's worth watching just to see Rochester take Jane and kisses her saying I love you. 😁

Not only did I love this version best of all but Timothy Dalton and Zelah Clarke were awesome together and the entire cast was amazing. But more than that this version is true to the source of Charlotte Bronte's writings..I've seen so many adaptations of Jane Eyre and let me tell you they're all very good in their own way, but nothing compares to this version. I love the language; I love the era. It was a different world, a different time.
@nora220009 жыл бұрын
Many comments point out that Dalton is 'too hot' to be a credible Rochester. In fact, the preferred archetype for male beauty at that time would have been St. John Rivers. Dalton would have been 'Vulcan' to Rivers' 'Apollo.' In fact, we have Charlotte Bronte's 'Jane Eyre' as the British cultural game-changer that made the whole idea of 'tall, dark and handsome' fit together in the same phrase. Just one more irony for this fantastic franchise. I just love this 1983 interpretation of the book. Well done!
@punch68325 жыл бұрын
nora22000 Thank you! Finally someone else realizes that Dalton was perfect because the cultural preference for male attractiveness at that time was the blond, Grecian Apollo, like St. John.

This most recent time reading the book, I finally realized what you said! His characteristics aren't too far off from the way Rochester's specific features are described in the book. I think we all just take Jane's description of him as not being handsome and assume he can't be handsome at all.

I do not understand why people keep telling me the 2006 version is the best. The script totally lacks the essence of the novel, Toby Stephen is a perfect Mr. Rochester for his appearance but he carries his role in such a modern manner, he clearly FLIRTS Jane instead of teasing her. The chemistry between them seem to be too obvious as they behave like a modern couple in 21st century. As a loyal fan of the novel, this version is really dissapointed

Liam Neeson was never Rochester. He was in Les Miserables, but he was never Rochester. And I'm afraid I don't agree with you on Charlotte Gainsbourg's performance. It wasn't bad but it wasn't good either. You're entitled to you own opinion, but so am I. I like this (1983) performance the best aside from the 1997 version although it wasn't entirely faithful to the book.
@VincentVanGoghAway9 жыл бұрын
Eh. lol Not really. But Liam Neeson is WAY better than William Hurt in my opinion. lol
@sandrareinbaha77699 жыл бұрын
yes, he was the best!
@valeriebooms82109 жыл бұрын
Sandra Reinbaha Firstly Liam Neeson never played a Mr.Rochester. End of story. Secondly the reason the only they even looked a like is because of the dress in the 1800's that they both had to wear in the individual films. Three the 1997 plays it off as lust.

Best adaptation! One of my favorite books. Loved seeing the gypsy scene...no other JE's I've seen bother with it and it's one of the best scenes in the book. :)

I believe the 1973 version (with Sorcha Cusack and Michael Jayston) had the gypsy scene as well. I too loved their exchange of words. :)

@@maricarmenmendez6658 Unfortunately not true. His eyes are changing colour like a clear water bluegreen. In Bond, Film not photo, and in 2-3 other films with close ups in close ups they are blue .

Thank you for downloading this lovely video of Jane Eyre. Always love this version back from the 80s. Love this particular scene and how he teases her.

So, the man is the definitive Bond, now the definitive Rochester... could Dalton be the best actor ever? He's certainly a candidate.
