IMO, Orson Welles was the best Rochester, but Ciaran’s is a close second. Rochester is a man who is trapped in a situation that is an endless, constant source of frustration and despair. Ciaran shows that and also does a great job of showing Rochester’s mischievous sense of humor and his desperation to escape. Samantha Morton is brilliant as Jane, the best IMO.

I own it too, Fred. You are right-- easily the best. Some seem to object that he "yells too much" but hey. His bark is worse than his bite, and if Jane doesnt mind, why should we? During corona virus, I have watched 3 versions of Jane Eyre clear through, and parts of others. The 1983 BBC miniseries with Timothy Dalton follows the book most closely -- it has time to, since the total running time is longer -- and Timothy Dalton is a marvelous Mr. Rochester in everything except appearance (he's too handsome for the part). In the 2006 version, the emotional interplay between the actors Toby Stephens and Ruth Wilson seems perfect -- but it doesn't follow the book very closely. But this is my favorite Jane. In my opinion, it also has the best on-screen chemistry between Jane and Rochester. None of the other versions even tempt me enough to watch them clear through.
@SibyllaCumana8 ай бұрын
Wow, I couldn't agree more. No other actess captured Jane's character as Samantha! Timothy is my favorite Rochester, he acts so well that one even forgets his handsomeness but - oh! - his partner!! What a letdown! I'm sorry to be harsh, but could hardly watch the series because she portrayed a totally different version of Jane. I liked Toby in 2006 but even there, Ruth played a flirtatious Jane with no display of inner strength. Overall, Samantha and Ciaran are the best couple. I know he yells too much at times, but he is a complex man with a gentle personality who feels imprisoned in a life where the only glimpse of hope is represented by Jane herself. I, too, like how he treats Adele in this version because Mr Rochester is a sarcastic man, but he cares deeply
@Rosefire4 жыл бұрын
What strikes me different in this version of "Jane Eyre" is Rochester's relationship with Adele. In the book and some other adaptions he appears irritated, even disgusted with her presence. But in this version he seems to accept the role as her guardian and doesn't mind showering her with presents. It leads me to wonder (based on the novel) if Rochester intentionally hardened his heart against Adele because of her mother's betrayal.
@nightowl62603 жыл бұрын
And is Adele even "his" child...?
@Rosefire3 жыл бұрын
@@nightowl6260 The books confirms (through Jane Eyre's perspective) that Adele is not Mr. Rochester's child. Jane mentions she tries to see if Adele has any physical resemblance to Mr. Rochester but can't find anything to confirm it.

it seems weird for rochester to call jane a madwoman. also, i don't get this performance at all, he just shouts non-stop.
@graveyardghost26033 жыл бұрын
If you read the book, you would understand why. Charlotte Bronte goodbye great lengths to explain the why's and wherefore's of Mr. Rochester's character. Sometimes you must see past the surface, in order to comprehend a person. Jane understands him all too well, and she therefore doesnt condemn his gruff and commanding manner. He never abused really, it is obvious his bark is worse than his bite. He is hard as india rubber on the outside, yet he longs to be transformed back into the caring, feeling man he was before fate knocked him about. When you have had enough life experience my dear, you begin to understand people and their motives. Millions of women who swoon over the Rochester character, cant be wrong. There is more to him than meets the eye. Incidentally, I feel that part of the appeal is that many women long to "fix" a broken man. In this story, it works. So you see, women who feel they are being "good feminists" in condemning Rochester, miss the point that he is not your average wife beater--he has a heart, but it is broken. And the love of a good woman is what repairs it. I think that is partly the point of the story. So dont take things out of context, but try to see the big picture. I hope this helps you understand.

Ciaran Hinds was an excellent choice as Captain Wentworth in Persuasion and Henchard in The Mayor of Casterbridge. But as Edward Rochester, no, He played him TOO angry. But at least he was far more affectionate to Adele
@graveyardghost26033 жыл бұрын
Agree about Persuasion, he played that part do well. But Ciaran Hinds seems to be a careful actor when it comes to choosing parts. I like his " take" on Edward Rochester, myself. Yes yes, he shouts, he commands. He is angry. But why? Because life has knocked him about, and he is frustrated. He sees Jane and is immediately attracted to her dignity, intelligence etc. Perhaps he is a bit threatened by her, st the same time he has already decided he wants her. So he attempts to establish dominance. It works, doesnt it? It works for me, in any case!

@@gracierella you are welcome, darlin. I totally understand why people think he is a jerk. But I just feel that he and Jane had certain things in common, that made her minimize his unpleasant traits. Because she could feel his pain, so she made allowances. And to be honest, a lot of women actually are excited by dominant, even domineering men. He never physically abused her or anything, so you know--to each their own. One other thought--it could be he wasn't nice to her at first because he was testing her. He had been burned before, and he wanted to make sure she wasn't like the others--he had trust issues. So he wasn't going to treat her nice until she proved herself. Sorry if this is overlong! :)

I don't understand why Jane would love this Rochester. All he does is shout. And yes, I'm a male who has read the book. Many sections more than once, in fact. I didn't get the impression that Rochester was like a bully. Samantha Morton, though, has got Jane right. She's not too "plain", but then, most Jane Eye actresses are actually not plain but good-looking. Nice of this Jane to also be playing Chopin's Nocturne No. 2 in E-flat major. Must have been a big hit at this time, as Chopin was a contemporary of the Brontë sisters!

Sorry, but I just don't consider Ciaran Hinds a good fit as Rochester. He's too abrasive, too volatile, too petulant, too histrionic, and too hot-tempered. Yes, Mr. Rochester of the book is moody and mercurial and has a somewhat irritable disposition...but when he has an episode of bad temper, he tends to become frosty rather than choleric.
@graveyardghost26033 жыл бұрын
To each their own I guess. To me, Hinds is the Rochester I like best, because yes he shouts, commands etc. Yet he also obviously has a heart beneath the rough exterior. I think Hinds nailed that complex character. Also, the chemistry btw him and Jane is electric in this film.
