President John F. Kennedy going for a swim in the ocean behind his brother-in-law's home in Santa Monica, Calif., and being mobbed by hundreds of bathers.
Kennedy was staying at the Santa Monica home of his brother-in-law actor Peter Lawford for his L.A. visit. At about 5 p.m., Kennedy emerged for a quick dip in the ocean.

When I see film or video of President John F. Kennedy, a wonderful feeling of joy comes over me and I immediately smile and think how fortunate we were to have this wonderful and Blessed man as our Chief Executive for those Thousand Days in the early 1960s. We have a treasure trove of his speeches, quotes, video and film archives to learn from and grow! Thank You Mr. President. REST IN PEACE ~ PRESIDENT JOHN FITZGERALD KENNEDY.

Can you imagine that? Our president comes out of his brother in laws home, walks across the beach and takes a dip in the ocean. A simple pleasure for anyone to enjoy, and no one bothered him. Of course the people on the beach were struck by his presence, but they let him enjoy himself for a short time. So much has changed...

I am not sure how the water was at that time.. but I know it was getting pretty polluted in the late 1960s onward. I know of a surfer who after one unfortunate day swimming has lived with a chronic skin condition all over his body believed to be from some sewage that he was swimming/surfing in, in that Santa Monica water. I sense at that time, the government was not as closely looking at the condition of the water as they are today. I won't swim in it, even now. It's too risky for me.

Jack had a special grace, an understated coolness, a reservation of movement, emotion, and expression that resonated with Americans for its air of remoteness, self-reliance, and existential valor. He was a unique thinker and public figure years ahead of his time. We shall not see his like again, in American politics and life.

+Charlie Brown Thanks, CB. Jack Kennedy had a rare gift in American politics - a true belief in egalitarian democracy that derived not simply from the early onset of Addison's Disease that nullified any feelings he might have otherwise had of superiority owing to wealth and privilege, but based as well on his comfort with, and respect for, those of all social, class, ethnic, religious, and racial backgrounds with whom he served in WWII. The men with whom he served revered him, telling me that he had no pretensions, no hauteur, no sense of superiority at all, that he was happy to be accepted as "just one of the guys," (although, they told me, he was "terribly bright and funny. He had a GREAT sense of humor.") That is so rare in American politics. Jack truly liked people, respected them for who they were, wanted the best for them, and sought, via his policies and programs, to aid them in the full realization of their respective dreams and ambitions. A good guy - and great president. I miss him.

He ran into the ocean with the enthusiasm of an 8-year-old, who had never done it before. This young president represented a prosperous era for the whole Western civilization, while being the symbol of the real American ideal. Just like its leader, the US was full of ambition - that would take mankind to the Moon by the end of the decade. It's deeply saddening to see who sits in his office by his table nowadays, and to see how the country has lost its true meaning.

August 19,1962 was a Sunday. I can imagine my parents, my brothers Anthony, Raymond and I, enjoying a hot Summer's day in San Fernando, California. My mom was pregnant with my sister Leticia who would be born on November 2,1962. My parents admired the Kennedys and my late mom Rosa voted for Senator John F. Kennedy in the 1960 Presidential Election. My mom adored the First Lady Jacqueline Lee Bouvier Kennedy! Not very far from our home, unbeknownst to us, our Beloved President Kennedy was enjoying the day at his sister Pat Lawford and Peter Lawford's beach home. I would turn 5 years old that Summer of '62 on August 28th and begin Kindergarten at San Fernando Elementary School.

He used a brace, but also did a lot of swimming in the White House pool (sometimes sans clothes!) to help the pain from his war injury when thrown off his boat from the impact of the large destroyer that rammed it. He also experimented with drugs to also help alleviate the pain. Anyone with that longtime pain would have tried anything to stop or lessen the pain from an injury or disease. Can't blame him, although many conservatives use that as a way to denigrate him. Too bad they aren't peacemakers, although the last president (#45) was the best one in that regard (hated wasteful war) than any since #35.

@@Kayte-tv2cw I only know about Jackie from videos and audios I've been graced with. I've never doubted her love for him, never heard any rumors of affairs by her. What sealed the deal on my beliefs of her love was an audio I heard where jfk was trying to get her to go to camp David during the missile crisis and she told him no, that her and the kids wanted to be with him in life or in death, they just wanted to be by his side. Anyone with an iota of knowledge knows of the great love she had for him. I was 8 when he was assassinated. I cried and prayed he would live. I don't remember anything else about that day. We had a satirical album some comedians had put out about them. It truly was Camelot. She was so admired as our first Lady not just for her style and grace but her intelligence and eloquence. I've never seen a woman with more grace than her. They were both a national treasure. Thank you for your comment.

I bet you Marilyn Monroe never crossed his mind. But secret plans to overthrow Castro did. Two months later it led to missiles put in cuba by the soviets. That gave us the Missile crisis. The Marilyn connection to the Kennedy's has been greatly exaggerated by our more modern superficial media. To him (JFK), she was just another babe he conquered. I'm not saying its justified, but that's the way Joe Kennedy taught his boys to treat women.

He was in on all those plots on Castro. Stop trying to rewrite history. Check operation Mongoose. That was orchestrated by bobby kennedy. Guess who that was? Yes the president's brother, and attorney general. JFK was in on all those plots.
@0907oliv
@0907oliv 10 жыл бұрын
iamtman1 The full record is not in. It may never be in. I am reserving judgment. Some historians have said there is no smoking gun, but they tend to suspect Robert Kennedy. Operation Mongoose was about a sabotage campaign against Cuba. In writing, at least, it did not include an assassination plot. Most of the folks who have made this accusation about the Kennedys have been CIA -- and/or General Lansdale. I wouldn't trust any of those people. The only non CIA person who has indicated a "plot" with Kennedy knowledge and whom I would take more seriously was Joseph Califano. There are a couple of memos that have been found implying RFK knowledge. I personally would like historians to compare memos in CIA or Pentagon files with memos in the Kennedy brothers files because as some of us know the CIA is noted for disinformation including planting false information in writing. The internal CIA memo about assassination attempts against Castro ordered by LBJ in 1967 said that the Kennedys did not know about the assassination attempts. People who worked with and around the Kennedy White House or who worked for Robert Kennedy vehemently deny it, including John Seigenthaler and Arthur Schlesinger and Richard Goodwin and Ted Sorensen. Given the tenor of the times and the fact that JFK did not the U.S. military to engage in any invastion of Cuba, the concept that he might have been tempted to accept the concept of assassination makes some sense to me -- but I am not saying that I believe he did - just that it might be understandable how he fell into that trap. Beginning in early 1963, overtures for rapproachment went between JFK and Castro through mediators that were mainly journalist. The two journalist involved were Lisa Howard of ABC News, who carried the first message from Castro to JFK that Castro was willing to negotiate, and a French journalist who was meeting with Castro on the day of the JFK's assassination who was carrying a last message from JFK to Castro. There were several communications in between those two meetings. Things were proceeding to the point that a diplomat was about to enter the negotiations. This is established fact. Castro has admitted it -- and so has the French journalist and the diplomat William Attwood. For your information, Castro was not such a great guy, something lefties don't want to see. He tortured and executed political prisoners. On the morning of JFK's inauguration, Castro announced that although he was planning to execute two prisoners that morning, he decided to grant them clemency as a gesture of good will to the new President. Fear of communism was real in the early 1960's, although it is hard for the people of today to realize that it makes it no less real. I have just given a more complete view of the situation than you did in your simplistic accusation. But this video is really about a swim in Santa Monica Bay.

0907oliv Interesting you name the CIA guys who said kennedy was involved in those plots vs castro as biased, but then take the word of Kennedy loyalists who deny any kennedy connection. They were equally biased the other way. I believe Kennedy was determined after The Bay of pigs to overthrow castro any way he could.

Sad this great man died so young. I do wish he had never gotten involved with Marilyn Monroe though. Jacqueline was a good wife. What was he thinking!

There were only 2 people in the water, when he took off his shirt, and the clip jumps to where he came out. I'd like to see how many went into the water, while JFK was swimming. They looked like a school of piranha, following him around. As a child, he was my 1st world hero...after mon père JFK sera connu comme le plus grand potus depuis Abraham Lincoln; et personne ne l'a dépassé depuis.
