0:38 - Have you ever had your AK's front sight get caught up in a barrier or obstacle?
1:55 - Ian - Do you think the AK ever had an open bolt format in it's conceptual stages of development?
3:00 - What would rather carry, the Type 38 or Type 99 Arisaka?
3:40 - What makes the M1 Garand so good?
5:47 - Karl - What firearms do you recommend for someone looking to get into cowboy firearms?
7:57 - Have you ever experiened any issues or stoppages at a match due to enviroment?
9:35 - Do you have any plans to mud test the M27 IAR?
10:17 - This will get buried, but is there any central place to find where you post every new video? Facebook, youtube, full30, etc?
11:24 - Why aren't there straight pull sniper rifles?
12:35 - Court ruled in favor of a man posting data to 3D print firearms online.
15:32 - How did you co-witness your red dot on the Hudson H9?
16:22 - Why isn't the ZH-29 style of front magazine catch used in more weapons?
16:58 - Can you to the best of your knowledge explain the history of the armsen OEG and similar operating sights?
19:14 - Hey guys! What is the best piece of firearms advice you’ve ever received? Thanks for all the great content!
19:43 - I would like to know your thoughts on the AR10?
20:46 - Repeat: Can we see a WWSD mud test?
21:31 - Why do we continue to see non-aperture iron sights on combat rifles after the P14?
22:50 - What do you guys think about the rapid decline of the popularity of the 40 S&W?
24:58 - Karl, Ian- have either of you played with a Walther P99/PPQM1?
26:01 - Best rifles that aren't an AR15?
26:47 - What are your thoughts on hanguards with integrated bipods as far as weight and utlility vs complexity and practicality?
28:55 - New to Patrion and haven’t watched all of the Q&As so forgive me if this has been asked and answered. What is your take on the grip pod?
29:49 - Did you ever get in touch with Franklin armory and if so when are we gonna see some reformation run and gun?
31:33 - Karl you’ve stated that you’d take a modern lever gun in .357 MAG, why .357 MAG instead of other revolver calibers like .44MAG or .500 S&W?
32:56 - How much influence do you think you are having on modern multi-gun competition?
33:46 - Do binary triggers have any use in 2-gun?
33:56 - Would you guys still like to check out an Ohio Ordnance Works Heavy counter assault rifle? If so let me know and we can schedule it.
34:48 - Please discuss weight and balance as part of getting a rifle "just right" to make most goldilocks happy for good handling in diverse situations.
36:03 - With your alternative history lever gun project, doesn’t the lack of training for the average Calvary troop on the frontier negate a lot of the advantages of the combined arms concept. In that the troopers can’t effectively employ it?
36:52 - Do either of you see any utility in the more modern versions of the m60?
37:45 - Now that you have broken GWACS what would you substitute for the lower now that it’s going to be some time before they redo the molds. I was thinking a Brownells retro Lower with an A1 stock.
38:51 - For your WWSD builds, you were both limited 14.5 with a pinned flash hider for the shortest legal(non-sbr) barrel length you could go. If those legal limitations did not exist, would you have gone for a shorter barrel, making the gun lighter and more maneuverable?
39:50 - For your WWKD: You mentioned in hard as hell 2 gun that the ammo selection is pretty crap. I would agree, quality 5.45 is pretty hard to get in the United States. However, have you considered looking into getting an AK in 5.56 as part of it's evolution? The action and system of the AK-74 platform is left untouched, but you get the advantage of quality ammo. Your thoughts on the system and evolution?
40:58 - Have either of you, fine gentlemen, handled or fired a double stacked .45 acp 1911 styled firearm (such as "legendary" para-ordnance p-14), and what are your oppinion of them.
41:47 - What strategies have you employed to mitigate extreme handguard temperatures when competing in the AZ sun?
42:22 - Karl- Have you determined the cause of the malfunctions you had with your H9 at Hard as Hell 2 Gun?
43:06 - Any news on doing Tiger Valley again?
44:44 - Will there be a desert brutality 2019?
44:54 - At what point does a rifle stop being practical and become a "gamer gun"?
45:26 - In today's world, do you think that videos of action shooting sports (2 gun, 3 gun, IDPA, SASS, etc...) are probably most effective tools for getting new people interested in firearms?

M E "Tariffs on Italian gun imports - bring them home!" -- They are home. Those are Italian companies. Don't blame smart people for figuring out how to execute on a business opportunity. We have our own revolver makers, so go here: www.smith-wesson.com/revolvers and change "Action" drop down to "Single Action". Tell me how many you see.

Then you can go here: ruger.com/search/ , change Type to Single-Action Revolver, Caliber to 357 Magnum, and see a long list. So that tells us: (1) There is a domestic manufacturer, and you can buy it if you like (2) S&W does not see a business justification for getting into a rather small CASS market.

"I like top-breaks." -- One day I will get a Schofield or maybe even a Webley, but I am just not sure if anyone makes replicas of a Webley in a useful caliber. "two Rugers and an Uberti 1873, all in .357" -- Curious, is this because people end up shooting .38 Special out of them anyway? I guess it is cheaper than .45 Colt if one does not reload. Does Uberti 1873 work well with .38 Special? I hear some .357 lever actions are not thrilled about .38 Specials.

I used to be an armorer in the Army, and I worked with AR's more than anything else. I know the platform pretty well. Better than most. For the life of me, I will never understand how gun guys can get so upset by hearing that an AR, is an AR, is an AR. They're all the same. Only difference is brand name and materials used; and smaller technical details such as gas port to barrel size. Other than that, AR parts are all made to the same milspec standards, and fit together with minimal smithing and tooling. There is no reason whatsoever to mud test every AR out on the market, or even a quarter of them. They're all the same. You can take an AR from the 80's and fit todays parts to it. I totally get the cringe, Karl.

With regards to the Bindin concept/OEG sights, we used a similar method in the army, combining a PVS14 on the left eye and a CCO68 on the right eye. If you had an issue with or just didn't want to turn on your PEQ, you could point shoot with NODs on and be reasonably accurate for CQB ranges at night. Not really necessary, we did it occasionally

There is one place where straight pull actions are generally used today: Biathlon. Not a rifle meant for anything other than sport but they do use straight pull because of the increased speed and ability to stay on target while cycling the action. This is mostly possible I think because of the small cartridge (22lr) that allows for a very short length of pull. This makes it possible to operate with two fingers on a lever placed close to the trigger.

Combo gas block - front sight, Draco length gas system, KNS gas piston, KOP replaces rear sight, Magpul AKM handguard, some solid stock with a QD mount, a safety with 2 tabs (one middle like a classic Krebs, one rearward for fast lefty operation), shortened pencil barrel with pinned FSC, all for a 5.45 or 5.56 AK.

Regarding the question about the OEG sights, when I served in the IDF I had an M4 with M203 GL, eqquiped with Meprolight M21sight, along with OEG sight for the M203 that sits behind the M21. It worked great, although it take a little time to get used to it but when you do you can make really good hit at ranges of aoround 400m. In the end, I really liked it and I still do when I get to use it on reserve duty.

Yes someone else holds my belief that 357 is the perfect lever gun cartridge! My reasoning behind it though is from a practicality stand point, I own a 44 mag Marlin and a 444 Marlin. I love both those rifles, but I'd rather carry a 357 or 38 revolver as opposed to either of those calibers. I think a lever gun that could share a more than decent revolver cartridge is key, plus being able to plink with cheap 38s is a nice plus. I think everyone who is into firearms should own one lever gun, they are just an awesome classic!

On the aperture sight vs leaf sight question i'd say more light, snow/water resistace, ease of use. Had my rk62 aperture sight once blocked by a snowflake... which wasn't nice... so on rain the aperture might accumulate a water coating more easily... if you know what i mean. It's a pain in the ass to find a stick to poke mud, sand or snow out of those apertures...

Para double stack owner here - had one for about 6 years now, shot a few thousand thru it. It works SWELL for the first, say, 300 rounds, and after that starts to seize up. If you continually clean it between shooting sessions you can keep it running well, but you can't neglect it like you can a Glock or M&P. My Para remains my personal favorite pistol in my collection, but my Glock 21 will shoot circles around it in terms of reliability and ease of maintenance any day of the week.

My first pistol was a $240 trade in M&P in .40 (it is designed to handle .40 pressure btw) I had gotten some trade in JHPs to go with it too, 50 round boxes of 165 gr Ranger T (more impressive than any 9mm round in gel testing I have seen) for $18 each. While I now prefer a G17 for all the cheap practice FMJ, 9mm Glock mag options and slightly faster split times (getting good and staying that way matters more than the bullet) I still think .40 S&W is a interesting round with JHP weights as low as 135 gr generating .357 Sig velocity up to 200 gr hard cast bullets.

Re: Apertures vs. Notch sites: Notch sights are easier to instinctively acquire a "fast picture" with. A tiny aperture sight is far more accurate, but does require more training to get comfortable with and more time to actually acquire the sight picture correctly. Remember, most rifles with notch sights were designed with the lowest common denominator in mind... and that means the lowest bar to entry to train your troops, and the lowest bar to entry to ensure that your troops are able to, at minimum, hit X targets over Y distance Z percent of the time, *and* they have to do both of those things (training and actual use) in the shortest time-frame to maximize their efficiency. The modern idea of "a soldier will live long enough to become proficient using better shoot techniques and practices" is just that - a modern idea. Notch sites spent the vast majority of their existence being used by countries who's forces were essentially minimally trained troops who weren't expected to live through more than a couple of engagements.

I mean technically it's still co-witness if the red dot and the irons don't totally line up. It's called lower 1/3 co-witness vs absolute co-witness and it has the benefit of you not needing to line them up which can be detracting in a shooting environment instead of just using either or. John Lovell has a video explaining why he is a fan of the lower 1/3 co-witness over absolute. Though it does come down to preference.

Regarding the Binden concept: I took part in a live fire training event back in the day with my poorly supplied guard unit who issued pvs14 but no peq15. I found that I was able to utilize the occluded eye concept with the nvg over my left eye and my right eye looking through the acog. Worked better than I thought it would and I was able to successfully engage silhouettes to 150m or so at night. My brain would superimpose the acog reticle I saw with my right eye over the green image I saw with my left.

Thanks for answering my question about the IAR. I don't question the reliability of the AR platform in its DI guise, but I'm curious if the addition of a gas piston introduces a potential point of failure that should be considered in the overall evaluation of the firearm. Again, thanks for answering the question, and I can't wait until I'm able to say Carl cleaned out pic rails just to satisfy my curiosity.

I think why the leaf sight stayed in use for so long is that an aperature sight has to be mounted close to the eye. That is going to be problematic on most bolt action military rifles with split recievers for the bolt handle to travel in.

My reason for buying a .40 sw handgun was solely due to the 10 round mag law. By the time I was both old enough and could afford a handgun, large cap mags were almost impossible to find. So my reasoning was why buy a 10 round 9mm when I could get the EXACT SAME gun with 10 rounds of .40? It was a no brainer. As soon as that ban ended, I got a Sig in 9mm.
@rurouniad
@rurouniad 5 жыл бұрын
wingracer 16 to be fair. 10 rounds in a Glock 29 (compact 10mm) would be ok. 40sw can also be shot through it. My problem here is modern 9mm ammo makes 40sw less logical if starting fresh. Nobody should turn there 40 in if they already own one.
@Zundfolge
@Zundfolge 5 жыл бұрын
wingracer 16 , I agree, it was more the 94 AWB that launched the .40 into such huge popularity with LEO adoption being second. And as battousai07 alludes to, the only reason I stick with it is because I don't want to start over re-buying a bunch of the same guns I already have but in 9x19 (and if .40 ever gets as hard to find/expensive as .357sig I can always buy replacement barrels in 9x19 for most of them). As for the G29, its probably the least reliable gun Glock ever made.

21:31 - I always figured it was the same reason you see magazine cut-offs on early repeating rifles: The European armies wanted their soldiers to fire on command instead of using their own discretion. An open sight encourages you to get a "good enough" sight picture, shoot, and repeat - but looking through a rear sight aperture makes you focus on that one target and wait for the best shot. So the generals might have thought of aperture sights as a bit of a moral hazard, making every soldier think his job was to be a sharpshooter and slowing a regiment's rate of fire.

"Can you to the best of your knowledge explain the history of the armsen OEG and similar operating sights?" For the STYLE of aiming, the ACOG stresses use of the Bindon Aiming Concept, and that concept is generally a good thing to do regardless due to eye strain that many people get when you shut or mostly squint one eye. If you need to squint, squint both.

Actually the safety lever on an AK Is just long enough to where when it is engaged in the safe position cycling the bolt removes the live round from the chamber. but does not let it travel far enough to strip another round from the magazine
@ZombieWilfred
@ZombieWilfred 5 жыл бұрын
Incorrect. Go and try it, it will do no such thing. You cannot eject the round from the chamber of an AK with the safety on... At least not with any of the ones I have used (many) and heard of. The bolt doesn't travel back far enough with the safety on.

Interesting thoughts about the influence of the shooting videos. As a former military brat and the son of a professional military historian, my general interest in guns was seeded at an early age. However, my more recent interest in actually acquiring more guns and shooting them comes directly from watching Forgotten Weapons and InRangeTV videos. TV/movie interest is probably limited to the P90 (thanks to StarGate SG1). I have never found first person shooter video games to be entertaining.

Only worthwhile double stack 45’s with decent ergos and mag capacity are the fnx 45 and glock 21 with a +2 extension bringing both to 15 rounds. For a 45 weight,capacity and reliability are the best with these 2. I personally prefer the fnx 45 for 45, and m9 variants for 9mm like the 92g so i can have better sights and decocker only.

The FBI justification report I read said that 9mm was simply cheaper, got within a certain percentage of .40s&w power, and was easier to train new shooters with, +2 rounds. It's not a better cartridge, even with new load tech, it's just logistically easier, just like sticking with 556.

@ZAKW42 5 жыл бұрын
@@Front-Toward-Enemy No, I didn't label one as better, and I didn't mark the 40 as superior in every way. It's the same discussion as with 6.8spc/6.5g/300blk vs 556: 556/9mm are cheaper to load and mass produce(billions of dollars for major disbursement), and hold more per mag than other options, with less recoil. There is no denying the other options have more energy, more barrier penetrating potential, and improved ballistics over range, but they don't make sense for mass general use, 556/9mm do.
@ZAKW42
@ZAKW42 5 жыл бұрын
My point was that for a large entity cheaper and easier to train with ammunition makes sense; smaller units who can put more into training with a more effective cartridge do so, and it makes more sense for them. Not all FBI is switching to 9mm, DHS still uses 40, Air marshals have a variety of options they can choose from to suit their situation. Pick any non-generalised SF military group, and they can choose other than 556/9mm if they need to. 556/9mm are great because they are just effective enough and cheap.

The real reason is that the XM177e2 had already established and proven the carbine length gas system. The original flash hider/sound moderator filled with carbon and over time, the sound moderation effect was reduced and the decision was made to discard it. The 14.5" barrel was the shortest length that allowed for a bayonet to be affixed to the carbine when using a standard front site block and an A2 flash hider. I have heard a lot of "mumbo jumbo" regarding the 14.5" length, but its all about the bayonet.

I was under the impression that the Japanese wanted to switch to a 7.7 rifle for logistics purposes due to their machine guns being chambered for 7.7. I'm pretty sure they made 7.7 Type 38s too but decided to just design a new rifle around the cartridge instead, giving us the Type 99.

"The real confusion and division came with the weapons. Not only did they develop them independently, but they used a great number of different guns individually and used a variety of ammunition. For example, both used derivatives of the Vickers machine gun for fixed aircraft mounting, but the IJN used a copy of the .303 British ammo while the Army used their own 7.7x58SR ammo. (they also had a host of flexible guns including the .303 Lewis and copies of the MG 15 using the German 7.92x57mm Mauser cartridge) Both developed derivatives of the .50 Browning gun, the Navy with their 13mm type 3 used the 13.2x99mm Hotchkiss ammo (identical to the .50 BMG except for the caliber and ammunition) while the Army used the less powerful 12.7x81SR .5" Vickers export (also used by Italy). The Navy also used a version of the MG 131. The Navy used 20mm Oerlikon cannons in their Type 99-1/2 (-1 is the FF, -2 is the FFL) while the Army had their Ho-5 derivative of the Browning as well as the heavy and slow firing Ho-1 and Ho-3 cannon. They had 3 different 30mm guns: the Ho-155 (scaled up Browning) while the Navy had their Oerlikon derived Type-2 and indigenous (and powerful) Type-5. The Army also used a number of even larger guns with their bulky (closed loop belt fed) 37mm Ho-203, .50 Browning pattern 37mm Ho-204, 40mm caseless Ho-301, and 57mm Ho-401." ww2aircraft.net/forum/threads/japanese-army-vs-navy.15786/#post-423741

Speaking of OEG, I was born slightly cross-eyed, it went away after a few years, but the neurons in my brain didn't actually wire in just right to combine the picture from both eyes into one, so I don't have the depth perception that most folks do and of course I can't use that kind of sight at all - at every particular moment I'm looking with one of my eyes, while the other is blacked out by the brain, so I can either see the dot or the target. Both eyes work just fine, I can consciously choose which one I'm looking with, it doesn't hinder me in my life at all, and in fact I'm a pretty okay shooter. I wonder what would have happened if I got issued one of those "scopes" in the military.

If you're starting fresh, there's no reason to pick a .40 over 9x19. However if you're already invested in .40 there's really no reason to dump it and start over. The pros and cons of both calibers are just too close to really matter. The only little caveat is competition, 9mm is going to give you a noticeable advantage in competition over the .40 (lower recoil, larger capacity) unless you're shooting some weirdly scored matches that reduces the number of hits required for "big bore" calibers. Most of the .40 bashing you see recently is just as stupid as the "only useful caliber starts with a 4" idiocy we heard back in the 90s.

If you have legal magazine limitations you might consider to go with something bigger or if a 9mm for what ever reason is too big for you and you want to carry something smaller, there is also a reason because better to carry some smaller caliber (as long it's over the toy category) than not carrying at all. For competition - there is no reason what so ever to not go with 9mm.

Certainly a WELL tuned Marlin is a sweet running machine. But faster than a '73? Your comment got me thinking. Yes the Marlins can be made to run mighty fast but if they're faster than a 73 why aren't they more prevalent in SASS competition? After all they were much less expesive. Actually you did see more of them in the early days of cowboy action but less so now. I think the answer is two fold. The Marlins seem to me to have a lot more complex geometry going on in the action and are more difficult to tune plus the gunsmiths that truely know how to do it are few and far between. Where the winchester toggle link is simpler and the tuning is much more straight forward, so much so that even the home tinkerer can greatly improve the speed of opperation. And a number of gunsmiths have truely been able to perform magic on them including the short stroke kits and light weight replacement parts. The Marlins are also much more sensitive to cartridge length where the Winchesters are more forgiving. Would be interested in other opinions.

I would take exception to Karl's assertion that the 40 is an obsolescent cartridge; it's still throwing a bigger and heavier projectile at a similar speed to the 9mm, and the advances in bullet technology that have helped improve the 9mm have also the 40. While it's currently en vogue to libel the 40 as inferior or inadequate, I think that the more appropriate assessment is that the 40 is no longer clearly superior to the 9mm, so that given the cost in complexity, capacity, and money, it's no longer a superior platform to the 9mm. I have never been a 40 fan, but it does have it's place; I actually have two of them (well, one and a half); the first, one of the police trade-ins you mentioned. I low-balled an auction for a P226, mostly because I'd always wanted a P226, and I actually won and got a good deal. I was similarly able to get a good deal on ammo. It doesn't see nearly the amount of range time as my 9mm, but it is still an effective defensive handgun, especially as it's generally relegated to nightstand or glove box duty. There are better options, but I'm also not under-gunned when I shoot it. The other 40 is actually just a conversion slide that came with an inexpensive 10mm; it's nice to have the option, especially when 40 is the "cheap" ammo to shoot lol.
