this is one of the rare ones. while some older ones do. I now feel like most autos have no nothing to them. on top of my head, i would rank league last compared to all the mobas i've played regarding vfx and sfx of basic actions. there are some good ones, but over all they do not feel good, rare are the mord naut even kindred. Somehow garen sion orn and mundo have either no weight or sound like a kitchen knife.

@aurumludum3695 slow does not mean theres weight to it. Everything doesn't match. It's slow and winding, does little damage, fails I flavour how a blacksmith would do his craft. Sound could be hame more echo, it sounds like he is hitting them with a pillow. Muradin is thematically similar, ornn is very dwarvern themed, and play for a bit and you can see how his autos feel better. And I don't doubt riot can do better but they didn't.

Funfacts about Velkoz autos: 1. His auto isn’t a projectile but a laser. this means it can’t be windwalled which is an awesome addition. 2. Velkoz crit animation looks exactly like I would want Velkoz crit animation to look. (and made me play him crit in friendlies (his E and Q are actually pretty useful while W has no cast time))

The nature of Vel'Koz's attack is actually pretty cool. It synergizes reaally well with his passive. Remember, part of his passive is that his auto attacks reset his passive's mark count timer.

Tried Volibear for the first time last night. His windup was my biggest complaint, kept on missing CS because I was cancelling autos to move. He attacks way slower than many other toplaners it seems. Similar feeling when I tried out Fiddlesticks jungle I wonder if large windup could be a parameter to potentially play with to shift a champion into the jungle. Longer windup matters less in the jungle clearing camps compared to in-lane

Vi's auto attack pattern looks so cool even if there's nothing in the kit that works with it like Sett's auto attack pattern. I wonder if a characters art or animations have ever inspired something on the kit instead of the kit dictating what the animations look like.

ive always said that! When the topic comes up in my group ive always said that league's biggest advantage over other moba is that just moving around and having your character do moment to moment actions feels smoother and snappier in league. Because a lot of the other comparison points end up being taste and subjective but the responsiveness of league is as close to an objective pro as we will get.

Interesting take. As someone who came to League from HotS, the worst part about transitioning to league was/is the auto attack animations. 7 years later and they still fuck with me sometimes.

I think its cause a lot of the Auto-atack characters in Hots are more of the Turret style (So stand style and autoatack) and less about Kiting, which is a Core mechanic of playing AA champs in league, in Hots very little champs could Kite properly cause autoatack animations were kinda long (Only 2 characters that come to mind that can Kite semi-consistently are Raynor and Vala) and then there was champs who had Specifically designed passives that allowed them to Kite like Genji and Tracer being able to move during their autoatack animations or Orphea's passive making her autoatacks instant so that she could Kite with her Q

@@Theoriginalmistwalker As someone who plays both about equally, I can say that hots has longer animations, but next to no windup. It's almost impossible to cancel your autos in hots, even on low attack speed champs (even Stukov never misses a punch). Autos in league work almost like spells similar to Anduin Q heal (you can interrupt the cast time by moving). It gives you the option to commit or not, but requires more finesse on deliberately doing so instead of just accidentally cancelling or being fucked by vision/distance/stuns

@@yargolocus4853 That is true, for me it always made kiting feel really clunky unless the character has a designated way of doing so, specially on characters with high atack speed but long animations (Like Tychus or Cassia), it kinda made it feel like you kinda had to stop moving and hit a few autos then kite instead of weaving in and out of animations, but then again that could be a deliberate design choice so that champs with kiting mechanics feel more special

@@Theoriginalmistwalker yeah there is much more deliberate design that breaks norms in hots. from characters like abathur (well yuumi comes close) to characters with 3.0 atkspeed on level 1. Tychus needs to go turret mode to attack, unless he has bonus movement speed. Then he can chase by not touching anything after right clicking. He still can't kite effectively though.

@@yargolocus4853 yeah and even then i find very little cases where the clunkyness doesnt feel intentional, like i mentioned Cassia cause i feel like for a character based on never loosing tempo having her autoatack animation be so long when her atackspeed is so high and you can go atack speed builds just feels strange, in many cases you loose passive stacks just by kiting, but then i can totally see why Tychus cant kite or why Malthael and Leoric feel so slow and impossible to chase with, its fun how the smallest of changes in game direction towards a central mechanic can make or break how you balance characters, always felt like most AA characters in HOTS are more like Kogmaw than Ashe because of the lack of fluid kiting, but then again it makes characters who can fluid kite more interesting to make since it becomes a special trait

There are a few good ones, but i would not put basic attack sound and animation as something that is above its peers. quite the opposite and even comparing to hots where the autos feel so crisp (leoric could feel more blunt and less smooshy, mord does it better yes). because of how trackign movement and autos works in hots animations from attack don't get canceled so youalways get the full animation making it look organic when walking and attacking because the animation of walking and swinging are mixed instead of 100% canceling the backswing and going into walking animation. Youstill get the benefits of stutter stepping each attack withotuh the animation jank that league and dota or dawngate did. So when you are butcher swinging you feel like a juggernaut romp and stomping people as youwalk and swing. The most "jank" youcan do is with some arcing attacks make it look like you melee air behind you and it hits becaues of how the animation looks (i.E muradin swinging his axe) valla feelsbetter than mf or vayne for being either dual wield or short crossbow (silver bolts don't count, ofc on hit effect procs give a lot of oompf), thrall you feel the crush, stukov you hear the swing of all the air moving from how much mass and how fast his muscles swing his infested arm. For all that league does better than anyone else, this is not it. the combat feel is good by how hitbox can be transported and the combo nature of most characters, most melee are indistinguishable compared to dota's where there there are idk how many sword users and archers and somehow they all feel different by sound by expectation of how powerful it should be etc (mirana is not, that shit is ass) PS: dawngate melee's were so freaking cool. the crush, smash and blunt sounds were soooooooo good, illaoi can be an entire OC but i can't unsee how much it looks like it took inspiration from dawngate artstyle and spell type, it just feels like it came from there. And i'm not nitpicking using master autos because they are ass across the board, i know its a design choice to inform through play that they are not strong and should not be what you focus on (zyra\xerath\zil\annie yze\lion\skywrath\persephone\hades\thoth\both zeri's\dibs\etc)

SMITE (at least SMITE 1) is pretty awful in this regard imo and worst than League. Every God feels the same. There's no weight to their movement, everyone feels like they're just gliding across the floor. All of the autos and skillshots feel really linear too.

@phillvwj2065 the topic is on the attacks not spells. They are linear by the fact the camera is locked in behind you, just how the asymmetric view brings different limitations. Many can feel like like they glide because you can attack while moving so while the moving animation doesn't stop I know for instance some swk swings can feel like that. But I entirely disagree about the sound part, the most similar ones might be 1 or 2 guardians that use their fists like geb, Gaia and artio in druid. Their thump can be similar other than that attack sound wise , specially because attack chains feels so much better, there are many users of spears and pole arms but they use it in all different styles.

Ill have to add that something that made Hots more capable of translating specific weaponary into atack animations and animation delays is that each character in Hots has different access to stat upgrades, so usually you could make a champ's autoatack Completely fit the atack speed that they would have in every game cause they have no access to extra AS, And if they did you could always account for that into the game, hence characters who have access to AS can kite consistently but each of them has their own kiting timer, different from league where at a certain point you can kinda kite with every character on the same timing unless ur one of the special cases August mentioned

For instance if you are just about to be in range but you're not range will aim down and melee will rise up their weapon ready to strike. There are enough external steroids with different values that just make that argument void. Since alpha there have been 2 characters that give you attack speed so by design characters have had their animations feel flowy and organic co.pated to the other games. Some characters have had attack speed added or re.oved from their kits, doesn't change a damn thing, just like range carries in league just do their much faster as you get attack speed. Just as an example, for a big part of the game history etc trait was to give attack speed buff after each ability, removed, and Johanna was the slow pushing vanguard but now she has a ramping attack speed talent. These are design decisions for the game, not particular characters. PS: reminded myself of the sound of dracena axes vs zul'jin how are zul's meatier and sound like they chop while dravens as big as him and sound like a katarina dagger. In the air no sound, zul's sounds like it's a spinning air being thrown, and by how fucking hard Draven hits it should feel like you are throwing trucks

When it comes to CSing it is true, which is when most people notice its shortcomings. Annie's extremely long attack range IS a strength. But it's not one of her strengths as a character, but a fallback or a crutch in most cases.
