Hi Lon. I have the second generation lock but I also have the door cam and I believe that is when the paid service kicks in. Once someone walks by or rings the bell I get a notification anywhere I am. Also the doorbell includes a Wi-Fi module that allows you lock and bell both to show on your app without the small relay box. So it may be worth a look to pick up the doorbell also and take another look. Keep the video's coming!!!!

Super expensive, but I LOVE that it leaves the key half of your deadbolt there. Misaligned doors are a common problem, though. Also lol Bluetooth AND Wifi - so many points of failure. My "Smart" bulbs won't even stay on the wifi network half the time, not sure how much I'd trust this.

Daniel Pierce is lockitron still up and running? I had one of their locks on my Amazon's wish list but it has been "temporary out of stock" for a while now. It seems they either went out of business or were overwhelmed by a huge demand.
@chrgeorgeson7 жыл бұрын
If you have a misaligned door lock (have to pull the door and turn the key to engage the lock) try and tighten all the screws in the door jams, then grab a file and file away the hole that the bolt goes into. Don't do too much but if your only a few millimeters off it's usually ok.

I've seen several videos on this lock and a lot of people are having problems with it to completely unlocking or completely locking. Also I noticed the companies videos have not been updated for instance to replace the batteries in the cylinder in their videos that tells you how to do it on their old one but not the new generation. I think this company's got a little bit of work to do before I purchase anything from them. Plus you have to download IFTTT to get around they are greediness to charge people it's just another app to take space on my phone. Thanks for your time every Christmas

This is my first time on this channel. I have watched at least a dozen reviews on this specific product, and this is my favorite one! I am planning to buy this product soon. You've got yourself a new subscriber. You've made a very interesting point about someone screaming through your window to unlock your door... haha. One very simple thing you did that I appreciate is showing how to manually unlock the lock, which is something I was curious about but haven't seen in any other video. Excellent complete coverage! (Would you say that it is somewhat difficult to lock and unlock manually for someone with small hands, such as a child?)
@LonSeidman6 жыл бұрын
It doesn't appear to be too hard to unlock manually. Since it "bolts on" to your existing lock it'll be about the same amount of force, just with a larger dial.

If you have Apple devices you can also set up push notifications for free through HomeKit. A lot more reliable than IFTTT and you don’t need a wifi dongle as long as you have an Apple TV.

Can a second guest disable the auto lock feature if the master/primary user has it on enable? Can you have another user like my wife to have full access as a 2nd user instead of a guest?
@HughD7 жыл бұрын
Lon, thanks as always. I'll bet this lock fails with its purpose if you lock it with the door open. It will tell you the door is locked when it isn't. That's exactly why I chose one of the standard lockset manufacturers (I used Schlage, but Kwikset would have been fine. ) I then am able through Smarthings to check if the lock is closed, but the door is open and send me an alert/text. No subscription is necessary. I'd never use Homekit for a door lock unless it allowed you to also have it accessible with an Android device. These things need to be cross-platform, in my house, anyway. This setup works fine with an iPhone and an Ancroid phone as well as Alexa and Google Home. Oh, I notice the iFTTT triggers don't include actually locking or unlocking the door.
@VicInCommentSection6 жыл бұрын
Hugh Dinwiddie you make a good point, but your information is incorrect. If the door is open and you try to lock it, you will get a notification in the app to say that the door is open. I don't think August had this feature in its second and first generation locks, but it is available in their current third generation locks.

Interesting lock. Btw I recently stayed at a red lion hotel and checked in via their app and it displayed my room number. Then when i arrived at the hotel i used the app to open my room door and when i checked out i used the app. I never once had to talk to the front desk person which is both nice and somewhat sad as theres less human interaction. Seems to be the way hotels, banks and other business are going.

Thank you for the detailed review. You didn't really explain what you meant by a 'digital key' or how it is used. Do you mean that the person you issue the key to now has to download the app on their phone and use it when they walk up to the door, while ensuring their Bluetooth is on? Do they have to manually connect to the lock? It sounds fiddly and with a lot of unanswered questions that I wish you didn't just gloss over.
@LonSeidman7 жыл бұрын
Yes they need the app installed and an August account.

So does a guest have to be able to connect to your wifi network? Say you wanted to give someone access but not to your wifi network? Great review, but the main issue I see with these products like those that a phone allows you to do, is I still have to have keys and cards with me in the event the battery on my phone or the lock dies, and I still see the likelihood of those things happening much more intrusive than just carrying keys and cards around.

The mechanical turn mechanism is completely useless. I really just want to unlock securely. I'll turn the knob myself, thank you. Nice review though!
@JonPrevost6 жыл бұрын
It's for a deadbolt where turning it is the unlocking part. This is not for a door knob.
@daryl42256 жыл бұрын
@@JonPrevost I don't think I'm clear on this, or maybe we need a reminder about how locks actually work. Locks match a key before actually unlocking and allow entry. I just need key matching to allow access, I think I'm still strong enough to turn open the latch :)

Never understood why people would buy a deadbolt on a door with side windows or a window. If a burglar wants to gain access to a house, all he has to do is smash the side window and stick his hand through the glass and unlock the door. Kinda defeats the purpose right? I'm a big fan of the deadbolts that have key access on both sides.
@TheMediumDaddy6 жыл бұрын
Daniel Peters most home invasions don't go down that way. This product is just for convenience not additional security. If you have a double keyed lock and don't leave the key in the lock them you run the risk of not being able to exit in an emergency. So pros and cons with everything. This may not be for you.
@parallaxggyt6 жыл бұрын
A bugler would rather go through the door. Easier and leaves less evidence. But if they really wanted what was inside I suppose they could smash the window
@jhartmac1006 жыл бұрын
A door opened without it being destroyed can make robbing easier, simply because you the thief can impersonate someone like a tech working on the home. But lets face it, home robberies don't typically have folks stealing TV's anymore. TODAY its all about HOME INVASION- get yourself a gun.........for me this device is about making it easier in case there's an emergency with my father, I can open it remotely for EMS
