I'm a fan so far! It makes carrying groceries in super easy. And I use it for things I didn't even think about, like now i don't have to pull house keys off my key ring if I want to heat up my car in the morning. Just hop in the warm car and lock the door from my seat!

My Clever House how does the proximity work? How close do you have to be when it unlocks? Is it seamless? Meaning, once you reach your front door is it already unlocked? Or do you have to wait for it to connect or still take your phone out, open the app, and press unlock?
@MyCleverHouse7 жыл бұрын
Hey Tylee. Since I use bluetooth, not a smart home hub like Apple's HomeKit or August's Connect, my range is limited. In that case, it should depend on your phone's bluetooth range more than anything. I can connect and operate while sitting in my car so my needs are met, ya know? I would say my car is approximately 20-25 feet away from the lock. Connecting with Bluetooth is not always seamless though, and I turned off the auto features for when you walk up and walk away to auto lock and unlock. And that has nothing to do with the feature's performance. That's a personal choice. While it might be okay for my smart lights or thermostats or other items to goof up, I don't like leaving my front door lock 100% automated.

Bought this version to add to my existing smart home setup as I primarily use HomeKit and Alexa. Just wanna make it clear to everyone interested in this. HomeKit will only work while connected to the same network. If you’re away from home you will need a home hub (Apple TV 4K or an iPad running the latest software that lives at home at all times.) I have an Apple TV 3rd Gen and was not aware that August is not compatible with it while trying to use it remotely. While everything else in my home works with the 3rd Gen hub, the august lock does not per the customer service agent I recently spoke to. I am only able to control the lock remotely via the the August app as of right now using the connect bridge. Now Im forced to be in the market of upgrading to the newest Apple TV 4K if I want to control the lock via Siri remotely.

As I’m new to these locks and just bought a Ver 2 used, I’m a bit confused. I see that yours, which I think is a Ver 2, does not come with the door sensor and bridge. Maybe Ver 3 does. So, are the major differences that: You will not know if the door is actually latched when it locks for Ver 2? That this, for whatever reason, does not need a bridge and, if so, how is it that the newer ones need a bridge and the old ones don’t? Again, I don’t know how accurate my questions are but, I just want to make sure I got the right thing. I bought this, specifically, so that if I have to travel, someone can come in and feed my cats. But, if I can’t operate this remotely from my phone or I have to worry that someone merely “thinks” they latched the door and my cats get out, I won’t likely be happy with this. Any advice is helpful.

This is a pretty comprehensible video, well explained. The only thing you must be aware before buying this lock. is that is not compatible with all deadbolts! Go to August.com to verify if it will fit your kind of lock before ordering!

Absolutely. It came with several options to help, but it never hurts to double check. You can probably get your money back if it doesn't fit but what a hassle!

Great video..I just subbed..I was thinking of getting this lock..On older houses where there has been settling, sometimes the lock drags a bit. Is the lock motor strong enough to compensate, or is there something that can be done to correct this?

Hi, thanks for the nice review. I have a few questions for August Lock. Is it worth to buy the second generation over the first one? I am an Android user, most probably not going to switch to Iphone, second generation focuses on Homekit if I am not mistaken. This is not an important features for me. Apart from this, what are the difference between 1st and 2nd generation? Without August Connect, it is impossible to control the lock remotely but do I still get phone notification when I am away? Much appreciate if anyone can clear my doubts.
@MyCleverHouse7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching! This is actually a great question and I did all my research and couldn't find anything different between the 1st and 2nd Generation outside of HomeKit. So I thought, "surely there must be SOME sort of upgrade outside of HomeKit..." There must be some tweak. Some modification. So I called August myself to ask. And the answer was "nope!" So if you are not going to use Apple HomeKit, there isn't much incentive to buy the 2nd Generation! HOWEVER... I am an Android user as well, and I would still buy the 2nd Generation. Why? I just have the (probably erroneous) belief that "newer is better." And I worry about getting a messed up refurb or something that I'll have to send right back. When it comes to tech and gadgets, I like buying newest and latest because it gives me that sense of security. Like maybe at the factory they discovered some inefficiency in production that they fixed that isn't a marketable "feature." That's entirely an irrational, emotional thing. It has nothing to do with features or benefits of the product. It's just one of my quirks. Great question though, thanks for asking!

Hi, just saw the video and I realize it's been a year since you made it, but hopefully you will still answer 2 questions for me. 1st do you keep the key in the lock? I've noticed in 2 videos that the key was still in . 2nd, since it's been a year, do you still love it?
@MyCleverHouse7 жыл бұрын
Hey Cindy. No worries, I'd be happy to answer. Has it been that long already?! 1. I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "keep the key in the lock." In my mind, I picture a lonely key resting in a deadbolt after I leave home, begging to be broken into haha. I'm pretty sure that's not what you meant. But I'll try to answer. You don't need a key for install. You can still use your key on the outside with the August lock. Your August lock controls your deadbolt latch from the inside, and works with most deadbolts. But it has no control over your doorknob. I still have my deadbolt key and can use it if I choose. To be honest, I would never abandon my key completely. I don't have 100% trust in electronics, no matter how nifty. So I always know where to find a spare key if I need it. 2. I do still love it. I was worried about climate change messing with it because of heat and cold expanding and contracting the door frame and whatnot, but no issues. Just keep the batteries fresh. I think I change them every 2ish months. Maybe every 3.

Looks like I somehow missed this one while answering your other questions, my bad. Thanks for your kind words :) You can only unlock this door with your phone's bluetooth (limited range - probably around 30 feet or so) UNLESS you have EITHER an August Connect (Smart Lock and Connect bundle on amazon here: amzn.to/2lf3hfq) OR a 4th Generation Apple TV. If you have an August Connect or 4th Gen Apple TV, you can control your lock and check its status ANYWHERE via wifi. As far as full video to make a home a smart home- not yet. I do have a Philips Hue setup and review video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q2iUq5aoibKXn9U If you want to see Hue connected and working with Alexa and my Echo Dot- I have that here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rp3boWRufZKdrtU I appreciate the support and I'll keep cranking out videos. @MyCleverHouse7 жыл бұрын
If you wanted to allow a renter to get into the house with just the August lock they download the August app, then you assign them permissions from your August app to be able to unlock the door with their phone. When they move out, remove their permissions. Keep in mind- it only replaces a deadbolt, so a locked doorknob will be total kryptonite to them getting in!

Hey Jas. The app does keep a record of who comes and goes which automatically clears after a certain number of entries (I actually do not know the exact number). @MyCleverHouse6 жыл бұрын
Good question. In short- Nah. There are multiple levels of security. The long answer- You have to download the app, and set up an account to add a lock. Then you secure your august account with two step verification. Once you connect your app and lock, the only person who can connect to the lock is the admin or people they invite through the app. Now if someone wants to try and reset the lock- FIRST they need to be able to connect to the lock. But only the admin's phone will be able to connect to the lock. If someone wanted to be super clever about it and try to get help through August tech support to reset a lock, support will request a photo of information found on back of lock and proof of purchase. STILL, support then CONTACTS the previous owner of the lock (using info from the first time you register for august app) to verify. There's lots of security measures against what you're talking about.

Reviews are all over the place, looks like either used cheap electronics or the software is flaky.. A lot of people say the autolock/unlock doesn't work..
@MyCleverHouse7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I've seen that too. I sort of touched on it in other comments, but I really just use the basic functions with the smart lock (basic bluetooth on/off), and for my uses I can't complain. My typical use: I drive up. Park car. I almost always have my phone out of my pocket so I just push the button and go to my door. Nothing fancy. I never give it another thought otherwise. Sometimes it might take a second to connect, but I think how bothered that makes someone comes down to an individual level of expectation and perspective for electronic device capabilities. I can say I have enjoyed it for what I use it for. I also think I am one of those "quiet majority" guys. I don't have a raging grievance so you won't see me all over the review sites dropping 1 stars. Lastly, I know returning things is a pain but always an option. Amazon was amazing the few times I had complaints about orders from them and August has this on their website: "Satisfaction Return Policy. If you are the original purchaser of the Product and you are not satisfied with this Product for any reason, you may return it in its original condition within thirty (30) days of the original purchase and receive a full refund." I'd be interested in hearing what you think about it if you decide to pick up an August smart lock. If you'd like, come back and drop a follow up comment.
