The Chinese condemnation of the deal stating we are adapting a “Cold War Mentality.” This deal will supply the Australians with 7-11 submarines. The Chinese have a submarine fleet of over 70, and are increasing their fleet by an equivalent of a new Royal Navy each year. On that basis who is adapting the Cold War Mentality??

This gentlemen needs to get his facts right. The Chinese promised Obama that they wouldn't militarise the sth China sea in circa 2015. They broke that promise by building islands on reefs after the international court rejected their 9 dash line claim over most of the sth china sea. Then they broke their treaty with Britain with regards to HK. And along with many other unsavoury acts Australia started to wise up that the region has become very strategically unstable and new submarines were needed quicker. The original price for the French subs was 50 billion which quickly increased to 90 billion with a delivery date blowout of over 12 years and we finally lost patience with the French.

I can’t speak for the Kiwi’s but I think it’s fair to say we Aussies were over the Rainbow Warrior bombing and French nuclear testing in the Pacific a long time ago. I’d guess the general perception of French competence with nuclear power and nuclear weapons is pretty good. But we trust the US and UK more than we trust the French government. We just tend to be better aligned on foreign policy too, and that matters when you spend alot of money on critical military hardware, where your supplier has the ability to mess you around alot if they don’t like how you use their gear.

It’s worth pointing out cancelling the order with the French is entirely legal and above board. If you get offered a far superior product with all the diplomatic, political and military advantages that come with it Australia would be nuts to refuse. The fact the French have got such a surprise by all of this is the icing on the cake. No country flounces off in the huff quite like France.

Eh, you can shred any contract you want, but there are clauses in contracts when you do it, there's a clause of $142 million in damages Australia needs to pay for cancelling the contract. As far as "superior product". Eh, the US submarines are for 2041, in 2 decades. And they will be commanded by US officers, just like the UK nuclear submarines involve US officers having command over them. This also puts a giant target on Australia's back, China has already said Australia now is a legitimate target when ther is US aggression in the South China Sea.

@richard cooper.. do you actually know what your talking about. first of 12 Subswas due to be delivered and operational by the early 2030s.. Its very normal for a submarine to take 5 to 10 years to build (look at RN Astute class) the last of the 12 boats was due to be in service by 2050s.. For comparison, the Contract for the Astute class Submarines was signed in 1997 with the first boat being launched in 2007 and commissioned in 2010. so 13 years. From Australia a report from one of the senators involved in the Submarine contract. The contract budget started at £23 Billion for a number of Submarines with Diesel engines and a target date for completion of all submarines was laid down. The contract also said that the Submarines would be built in Australia with French engineer's support and technology. The people who attended the final signing of the contract was. The contractor to build the Submarines. A member of the French government. A member of the French Naval Military. What was also in the contract is that the French company would provide engineers on-site and attend meetings on the progress of work. That was fine. But when the French got back to France they changed the contract. The designs kept being changed by the Fench. The budget was increased. The contract to build in Australia changed the French said that France would build the submarines, not Australia, which is in the original documents. So, the cost was £23 Billion went up to £65 Billion and then £90 Billion. As mentioned kept changing the designs and time scale for completion of the works. With the delays in design and other problems, it put the contract by 6 Months. So the Fench contractor broke the contract agreement and the Australians should have pulled out then not later but better leaving now before being cond any more out of money. To the French Nuclear submarines. The life expectancy is 7 years before having to re-fuel with nuclear fuel. Now the US/UK and Australia deal. The Nuclear Engines submarine's life expectancy is 35 years without a refuel. Now France Macron and Ambassadors and others in the Macron government. Need to re-look at their phone calls as every phone call that the Australian government and US/UK governments have used is recorded. Under contract law. The French government was given notice that the contract was coming to an end as times have changed and the costs going out of control and delays increasing. The Australian government is willing to share the phone calls if challenged. This is all from Australian government, not false information So France should tell the French people the truth.

@MaxFromSydney1
@MaxFromSydney1 3 жыл бұрын
No, that isn’t correct. Up till recently, Australia was uncomfortable with anything to do with nuclear power, nuclear weapons testing in the Pacific, Chernobyl, Fukushima etc. So Australia asked France to supply diesel / battery powered subs. Then China started pushing us and it’s other neighbours in SE Asia around, interfering in our politics, punishing us economically because we didn’t kiss enough a$$ etc. ie. China became our biggest worry. In the meantime, the French Naval Group were screwing us on price, and delaying the job. We were part way into a dysfunctional “marriage” with the Frogs, but they didn’t think the contract was in any jeopardy. PM Scott Morrison had rolled out the red carpet to the UK well before Brexit finally happened, offering to do deals on trade. By the sounds of it, Scomo then approached Boris about access to decent attack subs with the benefits of nuclear propulsion. Biden had realised that China had become a big problem and both he and Boris have come round to the idea of selling Australia their sensitive nuclear reactor tech to help support a common strategic goal. And so here we are.

France should stop pretending this is about stabbing allies in the back, since they originally won a bidding war between Germany, Japan and themselves (did Germany say they were "stabbed in the back"?). Also the French/Aus deal was bilateral, no other French 'allies' were even involved, they were going it alone. This new deal seems much more about a strategic and defence pact than a business deal.

Missed couple of important factors re the French contract (1) cost blow out has over doubled since 2016 (2) timeline for submarine delivery is already 10-15 years behind (3) Even if the French were willing to upgrade the subs to nuclear their engines need refueling every 7-10 years and this could not be done in Australia, but the UK/US subs last 25-30 years which is basically the life of the submarine.

France is supposedly upset for 2 reasons: 1. The loss of the contract, although the reasons are clear (cost blowout and Australia’s changing needs in their region). 2. Being kept in the dark over the AUKUS agreement, which given France has interests in the region and a similar stance towards China, feels like a betrayal of sorts. Does this host have the slightest idea of global trade? China is the second largest economy in the world. Of course Australia (and many other countries) would be heavily impacted by China’s actions. The waters in which China are acting aggressively account for 1/3 of global trade. Yep - all countries (not just Australia) would be in trouble should China take control of it. Maybe it would be worth reading up on a subject before going on television, demonstrating a complete lack of knowledge on not just the topic itself, but global economics…

UK won't be in the eu army as no longer in the eu! commonwealth countries are not in the eu and it is only right the UK help Australia with its defense of its territorial waters. France needs to let go of the eu and be its own country again!
