Honestly mate, you and your videos are nothing less than pure class... Really informative and extremely helpful and on plenty of occasions I've been affected by gear or apps you're either doing a review for or are simply speaking about how much respect you have for said item. Not once, have I bought something you recommended and have it turn out to be less than stellar. And that's no easy feat believe me. The missus would be first to tell you that once I've decided on a purchase, I'll spend days doing research to make sure the kit I decide on is exactly what I was after - I mean, yeah of course nobody plans to go and buy something they're not happy with but there's plenty of peeps who will get fed up trying to find that elusive "perfect" piece of equipment and settle down with their purchase quite happy with whatever new toy is getting unboxed... yet unknowingly to them, had they just looked at one more page or clicked one more drop-down menu, they would have saved 50 quid and would currently own the exact bit of kit they don't even realise they wanted it. I'm really tired right now - it's coming up to 6am and this is my first weekend off work in almost 4 months so excuse my shit-show of an attempt at decent grammer, my piss-poor punctuation - or should say, the general lack of if. And if I'm blethering on a bit, sorry about that but not keeping track of tangents and going off on them at the moment !! All I really wanted to say was thanks. Thanks for the great content, the upbeat humour and the in-depth knowledge you possess but more importantly, what you pass on to us. Especially now we are properly into this new era where iPad Pros taking the crown from the over priced MacBook (along with much more powerful, yet equally priced Windows PCs, running on huge 4K screens - an absolute godsend now I can run Ableton Live on a 60 inch TV screen with the laptop providing a second screen when needed, instead of using multiple monitors just to be able to use it comfortably) Anyways, even though in the past 4 years, what I've spent on iOS apps make up a tiny fraction of what I've spent on Ableton 8, 9 and now the Live Suite 10 upgrade itself plus an immense amount of Live instruments, racks, synths and so many plugins that I've not only lost count of the amount - but in a LOT of cases, I've actually lost where large amounts of files are stored lol. On ios it can still rack up if you're not careful and are one of those people who just have to buy literally everything that comes out. And goddam subscription based payment plans.... Aaaargh, I hate them. Hate them so much. More than loot boxes in multiplayer games (yep, I'm a gamer too - So yeah, thanks for the help buddy. As I said earlier in this far too long comment, I have a lot of respect for you and your channel. I could actually count the amount of KZbin uploaders who I regularly follow (and actually care about what they're on about, on one hand. You, the DJTechTools team, Doug from TSTR, Carl Rag, Point Blank and not many others. Well that was a much larger wall of text than I intended it to be. If you do actually read this Jakob, I just want you to know just how much I enjoy - and appreciate - your videos. Cheers !!! Hmmm, looking back, I could probably have gotten away with just:- Thanks for the upload Jakob 😉

Please do a video using these techniques with the Akai Fire Controller if you can get your hands on one. I'd love to know if it's possible to map each layer in a similar manner that is the default in FL studio but using a range of apps, for example, make use of a looper like ENSO + use the 16x grid for step sequencing some percussion + use the Drum Mode (4x4) for live play. In general, I'd like to see your take on it, and how far it could be pushed as a controller for iOS music-making.
@JakobHaq
@JakobHaq 3 жыл бұрын
Akai hasn’t released MIDI implementation for the Fire and so it’s been undocumented for some time. I’m not sure that thing talks standard MIDI language and it’s probably something more native to FL studio. One could probably script/code something for it but that’s not something I can do. Plus you’d have to figure out how the thing works first. There is a company that sells a script for $28 (CROSSFIRE) that makes the Fire compatible with Ableton. In any case I wouldn’t recommend getting that controller unless you’re a FL studio user.

Yes, I have the same issue. I really love AUM. Sending MIDI CC commands from my Electra One MIDI controller to AUM and its AUv3 apps just works seemless. But I just wonder how to send MIDI CC commands BACK to my Electra One MIDI controller to see immediately parameter updates on Electra One display. If I'm not wrong the problem is that MIDI routings in AUM in are limited in general. AUM does not allow sending MIDI CC commands back to external MIDI controllers. But nowadays some MIDI controllers have displays. Is there any solution for this issue?

Jakob: Dude this stuff is awesome. Completely lost . So a midi controller can be any digital piano or synthesizer ? IOS apps that have reverb effects can be connected through an I phone to a digital piano with a lightning cable ? If there are latency issues , when you press the keys, and the sound from the app is delayed , what would you do ? Also with hardware like Eventide Black hole reverb pedal : What is your opinion on connecting it to a digital piano ? Do I need another type of USB cable ? I have a Kawai DG 30 . Thank you for making these videos . I really want to figure this stuff out , but don’t know where to start . I saw some of your videos and was very impressed . This stuff is fascinating ! 👍

If you open an AUM channel with a Loopy instance and then midi map the tempo of Loopy, you automatically control the tap tempo of AUM also. This is a workaround.

Me again…So I definitely know how to map my hardware controls to AUM now and it’s a beautiful thing. My remaining problem that makes this still unusable on a gig is that the DSP is running too high and I get occasional dropouts and crackles, but I don’t think what I’m doing should be that taxing. I have tried restarting ipad, clearing RAM (neat trick I never knew about), and either having the background apps running or not and can’t figure out how to improve DSP. What I am doing should be simple (I would think) - Just layering about 5 or 6 sounds, not even calling in FX units (yet). All going to channel 2 with key ranges set and many do overlap but I’m pulling them in/out as I play. (Eg: bass on left end, and a few types of keyboards for most of the range so I can mix or switch them, strings pad and organ that I might bring in). DSP sits around 25% to 60% mostly but will often go into 90s or spike above 100%. Also the channels are showing peaks in signal that I’m having trouble taming even after lowering gain o the node. I’ve tried only using sounds from SoundFonts or from bsi but it doesn’t seem to matter for the DSP if I mix if different apps like Ravenscroft or not, still get high DSP. Also still get high DSP even if I make a session with fewer instruments. True on phone or iPad. IPad is a few years old - maybe 4 years old. Is this just a limitation of trying to work only with iPad? I’m not interested in taking a laptop to gigs and I don’t even know what software I’d use on a computer…I would continue to just use a synth instead. I’m only using for performance, for sound layering.
@JakobHaq
@JakobHaq 2 жыл бұрын
[balance is hard] Some apps are definitely way more heavier to run than others so finding a good balance of apps you like vs apps that run light on DSP … well it can be a real pain in the b*tt quite frankly. iPads and iPhones are pretty powerful but not nearly as powerful as desktop/laptop systems yet, so the limitation is definitely there. . I too have had AUM setups where I’ve got maybe three to four apps loaded with DSP spiking as if it’s trying to off itself. Then there are times when I run sessions where I’ve got about 20different apps loaded including effects, compressors and other things where DSP is comfortably taxing around 60%, no spiking whatsoever. . It really does depend of the app(s) you choose. I know, It’s not clear cut either. I test a lot of apps, I mean like a lot and I never know how well an app is going to run in a setup until I’ve properly tested it out for some time. It’s not something one can find out on the AppStore. It’s pretty frustrating. . [Graphical shenanigans] For instance when running AUM setups and I have many channels and I try to scroll back and forth between the channels, I sometimes get clicks and pops in my audio. DSP might look fine but I still get clicks and pops. So I looked into it. Turns out that some apps run heavy graphic stuff for the interface and that that can cause audio spikes. It makes sense when I think about it, all apps aren’t made equally and I remember similar things happening to me back when I was using desktop/laptop computers. Some synth apps had these gorgeous graphics but I had to set those settings down in order to run them. . [Romplers and Samplers] Another thing is RAM. Ravenscroft for instance is RAM heavy due to all that sampled material. So loading several other “rompler” type instruments might cause issues. . [FX] You mentioned not loading any effects yet. Well there’s another thing that can muck stuff up. Reverbs in particular. Reverbs are some of the most resource heavy effects out there and can eat up a whole lot of resources (DSP, CPU etc). They’re often way more complex then a delay or phaser etc. so if an app has built in lush quality reverb, then that might be heavier than the “actual instrument” itself. . [Live performance] I use synthesisers and effects most of the time. And I often use synths that sound like I want them, but also runs low on DSP. It really matters. When building setups for live sessions, I try to build setups with as few plugins as possible. I’ll also try to build setups where DSP doesn’t reach a over 50% just because I want to make sure that it’s stable for the performance. You want some resources over for the actual system and also for polyphony. . It’s like a rule for me and I pretty much did the same thing back when I was using laptops for live stuff. It was only in the studio where I maxed out my stuff because in conventional daws, one can freeze tracks and free up resources that way. In fact I still do that, freeze my tracks inside Cubasis to free up resources due to heavy projects. . [multi-processing] Many do not know this but AUM is not using multi-core processing. It’s running on 2 cores max. So even if you have an iPad Pro with 8 cores like the one I have, only 2 is being used. So there’s about 6 cores of power just sitting there “idling their thumbs” (nerd joke). . It’s been like this for a long time and the only apps that actually does support multi-core tasking are FL studio mobile and Cubasis 3. Every other music app is still just using 1-2 cores at the most in a processor. . At the beginning of every year I do this video in where I talk about what I think devs should focus on. I this year I asked for Host app makers to get multi-core tasking support into their apps. When it happens it’ll be amazing. Even older iPads with more 4 cores or more will be able to do more at that point. . [Upgrade] Your iPad might be getting old for the type of work that you want to do. You mentioned it’s about 4 years old. With every iOS update, more resources are being used by the system and music apps get more complex. So it’ll slowly tire out an older iDevice. . My old iPad Pro (1st gen) doesn’t even get close to what my current iPad Pro can do now. I think I can load about 3-4 times as much stuff on this new one. My current model is an iPad Pro 11” from 2018. I got it used and it’s pretty dope what it can do. And when looking at what people are able to do with the new M1’s, we’ll I’m very jealous. I will be upgrading an at some point. . Btw, I’m curious. What model iPad do you have? Do you have a model number? And what apps exactly are you trying to work with.
@JakobHaq
@JakobHaq 2 жыл бұрын
I even forgot to mention polyphony. Polyphony is a real CPU/DSP killer. The more notes you play at the same time, the more resources you’ll eat up. So if you’re already running really heavy apps on a taxed system. Playing lots of notes will play into it (no pun intended).
@JakobHaq

@@JakobHaq Sorry for the delay in my replying. It’s taking me a while to read and absorb all of this, lol. The iPad I am using is an iPad Pro 10.5 inch running software 15.2.1. I often wait to update. I do have a newer iPad also that I use for other purposes (OnSong setlists and control of my guitar and vocal processor), an iPad mini 6th gen just acquired in December, also running 15.2.1. I have not tried using that for AUM because I don’t have the gadgetry I need to connect with the USB-C on that one. I tried using a little adapter and that didn’t seem to work so I would have to get a hub or something with correct end on it. I suspect, after reading all of your comments, that the polyphony is the biggest problem. I am trying quite a bit of layering because I’m used to working with a workstation that allows me up to eight instrument parts and that has spoiled me. I will try something simpler this weekend. I also have a hardware synth box, a Ketron SD2, which I might just go back to using, and skip the iPad experiment, as fun (LOL) as this has been. I have an M-audio controller that I can divide into four zones and put four sounds from the Ketron into, and go completely DAWless and no iPad needed. I used to play in a band where that was my set up and it was simple and easy, once I set up all the zones and presets. I liked the idea of switching to iPad but it may not be practical with my particular tastes for layering. AND Another issue is that I have a shit ton of gigs this summer, all outdoors, and keeping ipads from overheating while still being able to see them is a concern. The one I already use I have to keep under my keyboard on a shelf to keep it out of the sun.

Question for you! I have the ipad listening to Ableton Link via the cam con kit using the apple ethernet adapter - works FANTASTIC. Question would be how and if you can get midi from that connection integrated into the AUM midi routing screen so I can CC, notes and even Start/Stop commands to different places within AUM from the Imac running Ableton Live. I hope I'm articulating this right. I love that LINK doesn't offer that stuff - It does sync very well and we need that. However just needing the rest. Head is kind of spinning with options but would like to not add gear to complicate things ( ie iconnectivity hardward etc) . Thank you my Swedish fish...erm, friend.

Super helpful, Jakob. I was wondering if you could also program macros in AUM. So if I tweak one know, several parameters might change in a defined rate (e. g. Filter Cutoff + Reverb Wet + Detune).

How about jumping values if you make a change in a parameter on your touch then on your external Midi Controller, then the value jumps. It seems AUM doesn’t support the catch up feature. How to solve this problem?

Great video, man !!! For me it doesn’t work - I do all as described, but when I assign the fade to the channel, it just doesn’t work - the movement of the fader is not recognized and assigned. Also, the knob’s movement left / right doesn’t work smooth for me. Is there a hidden mode of the nano maybe? It’s just not working correctly.

Perfect tut, cheers! Just picked up a pre-owned nanoKONTROL this aft for $50 :) Is there a workaround for the Play button staying lit if you stop or rewind rather than hitting Play again? The button is set to Toggle, mapped to Toggle Play in AUM with Cycle disabled. Seems like it needs to send another CC to reset the LED, so maybe not possible. What do you use the jog wheel, Cycle, Set and Marker buttons for in AUM? Thanks again!!

Best I can get is either have them on Momentary and lose the visual feedback or set to Latch and hit Play/Rec twice to reset the LED. At least it doesn't get outta sync with the function!

Can apps like OSC be used to control midi on the same iOS device (not on a second Mac/OS X device)? Seems there are a few apps like this, but all the info about them seems to revolve around controlling Mac / Windows / hardware. Also, a few mention Audiobus compatibility, but AUM isn’t mentioned (eg. knob lab)

with Aum, I'm having issues with synths failing or disengaging in the middle of a gig. Any recommendations? Im doing the ram clear trick before the gig... Do i need a more powerful ipad? I have maybe 6 synths loaded for this particular set.. but its random. Only happens once in a while... Does it stand to reason that if i buy a newer ipad (pro?) With more memory will i have less issues? What's your recommendation? Thanks!
@JakobHaq
@JakobHaq 4 жыл бұрын
A more powerful iPad can handle more apps yes, but some apps are really heavy. There are some synths that I can only load two or three instances of before I get laggy graphics, like Model D from Moog. It’s so power hungry. This is the problem when mixing apps, especially if you’re using compressors and EQ’s and FX. Really good sounding reverbs are really taxing on the system too. If I where you I would meticulously test out several different combos until you find one that is stable. Write down what you’re using and make screen shots. Look at the CPU load and stay away from the heaviest ones.

Great lesson my friend, so glad you did it. Couple of questions though. I accidentally hit the wrong parameter and "taught' it. Any way of undoing that without removing the effect from the channel? And how do I get rid of the "+1". Tried long hold; added another insert. Tried moving it to the side; added another insert. Etc. Etc. And do you get paid the same if I skip the ad or more if I watch the whole thing. Love watching the Native Instruments ads even though I like the Novation stuff but some times they put in lame stuff. Thanks Bro, I am Grateful.
@JakobHaq
@JakobHaq 5 жыл бұрын
If you accidentally record the wrong CC# then you can clear it sliding the parameter in the list to the left. You’ll get a red clear option. . To add a slot one slides the “line” upwards and the +1 appears. So to get rid of the +1 simply slide the “line” back down.” . When it comes to adds, I have no idea actually to be honest. I haven’t looked into it either. But I will now. 👍🏼

Yes. You just need a have to multi I/O interface that is USB class compliant. I’m using a really inexpensive device right now, a Behringer UMC 1820. I’m also using a DIN5 MIDI splitter to hook up various synths to this thing for sequencing etc. You can easily set up a multi-track template with AUM. There are multiple other options out there for sound/midi interfaces if you search around for iPad compatible multi I/O devices.

@JakobHaq
@JakobHaq 4 жыл бұрын
It’s possible to use multiple BLT controllers at the same time on the same channel. However I don’t know how the Airturn Ped Pro works and what types of messages it sends out so I can’t answer if it’ll work the way you intended it to work. AUM’s various functions needs regular on/off MIDI CC’s. Now, I found this link regarding programming the Airturn to send out other types of MIDI DATA so I’d suggest you check it it out >>> www.airturn.com/support/midi/airturn-manager-setup-for-midi

hey great video. i have a follow up question: Is it possible to disable a source instead of muting it? I would like to have a function like that because i often use three channels with different synths and control them with the same midi keyboard. then i switch between single synths by swiping left the sources in the eject view. this is the only way i found to disable source temporary. when i only mute a channel the synth is played nevertheless and takes up a lot of DSP. Does someone have a better way to switch between different channels which use the same midi keyboard? (is it possible to midi control the eject state?)

One other thing do templates cover this specific instruments or can there be general ones also. Thanks.
@JakobHaq
@JakobHaq 5 жыл бұрын
Ah, when I wrote “save templates” I meant more like, make a project, load up as many channels as you normally use plus the stuff you’d want in your mixer like panning etc. Then make your midi mapping’s and when that’s done, save that project and name it “template”. If I make an 8 channel template then I’ll name it “8 channels midi map template”. . Then, whenever you start up a new project, load that template project and start working from it. Just make sure that you then save it as a new project with a proper track name and you still have your original template saved. . I do this in ever app or piece of hardware hat I use to save time. This way I don’t have to redo the same stuff over and over and I have more time over for creativity. 👍🏼
