Aung San Suu Kyi in a time of transition

Join contemporary Burmese writers as they consider the role of deposed leader Aung San Suu Kyi in the changing political landscape of post-Independence Myanmar.
Acclaimed Burmese-American author, Wendy Law-Yone, will explore the role of Aung San Suu Kyi as a symbol of political 'transition'. Dr Ma Thida, who worked as an assistant in Aung San Suu Kyi's 1990 general election campaign, will discuss post-Independence politics with a focus on politician and opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
The event will give a rare overview of how Myanmar has reached its current political state, ruled as it is by a military dictatorship, which jailed Aung San Suu Kyi and ousted her government in a coup in February 2021. Joining these two Burmese voices is Melissa Carlson, a specialist in the development of Burmese modern and contemporary art, who will show how art has been a means of articulating changing political messages since independence from British colonial control in 1948.
This event is part of the public programme supporting the exhibition Burma to Myanmar (2 November 2023 - 11 February 2024).
