What about the lawsuits of data extortion? That's all those companies do, like truthfinder. They source data information of everyone then sell it to those with an interest who will pay $ for it which is extortion! It's tech fraud & people should be entitled to a portion of the sales & people should be able to opt out their intellectual & physical property data from these companies extorting it! The companies should be having to contact people before data is sourced or sold for permission first which isn't happening! I shouldn't have to be paying a company like Aura a monthly fee to stop the unlawful extortion of my intellectual & physical property data, public or not public!

Perhaps I don't understand, but I feel like the value of services like Aura is either not explained or dubious. What am I supposed to do in response to dark web alerts, and equally importantly what do Aura or other services do after identifying that my information is on the dark web? And how does the threat resolution work? What are typical threats and what do services like Aura do in response? To me, while this review is good, it does not adequately explain the service provided in order for me to make a decision regarding its value.

Very good question. Firstly, none of these services are perfect and there are things they won't do. For instance, once your info is on the dark web, it's there. You can't remove it. So what's the value of monitoring it? One example would be if you get a notification about a specific password being leaked - you would then want to change it as a priority. Identity Verification Alerts will let you know if a loan has been taken out in your name. This might be the first notification you get of identity theft. Ideally you catch it here (like I did) and not when you receive a collections letter or notice that your credit score has dropped. Threat resolution will tell you what steps to take in the event of identity theft (freeze your credit!) and they'll do 3 way calls with you and impacted institutions as needed. Hope that gives a few examples of where these services can be helpful.

Aura quickly wiped some links off of my list of web sites that I've used for years to save money every month on car washes, grocery coupon, etc.. All these were trusted links that never caused any problems. Can't wait for Aura to expire next month! I'll go back to my old Identity Theft service that was better, cheaper and never caused issues like Aura does!

Great question! Honest answer: it's impossible for me to say. All software companies are integrating AI right now. My question for any company is: will you do what you promise to? If the answer is yes, I'll give them a try. I don't place too much weight on how they achieve a particular result, just that they achieve it somehow. Does that help?

What does the insurance cover? LifeLock states they cover bank account losses. Some others like Experian do not cover bank account losses and only cover fees associated with getting your money back. Does aura have an account reimbursement element to their insurance?

Yes, Aura advertises a cash recovery component: www.aura.com/legal/5m-insurance This is one of the few areas where we (currently) take the companies we review at their word. It's really hard to put their insurance policies to the test in the same way as, say, dark web alerts or VPN performance.

Unfortunately there is no way to remove it once it's out there😞 What dark web monitoring is designed to do is alert you to particular credentials that have been exposed. For instance, if you found that the password to your main email account had been leaked and published online, you'd want to change that immediately. You can check haveibeenpwned.com to get a sense of which of your credentials may have been leaked in the past.

I think that re-selling your information would pose an existential threat to any identity protection company and wouldn't be worth the risk for them to do so. But then again, credit bureaus appear to have been doing so for years so... It's totally reasonable to decide not to turn over your PII to a company if you don't want to.
