MST3K - Favorite Moments - The Thing That Couldn't Die

In episode 805 we learn that a 16th century devil worshipper, with a hypnotic severed head, with aspirations of world domination, doesn't exactly present much of a threat.
As a matter of fact, making a movie about it is a lot more dangerous, as it could easily cause worldwide, spontaneous narcolepsy.
Look out for evil winds, threat of line dancing, battle of the network boobs, evil voices, the smoking of a field mouse, evil wishes, the inability to bend spoons, a skilled artisan rat, a geometrical savant, lack of tonsil boxing, evil books, the kindly peeper, non-feminine lamps, the colonisation of North America by elves, an evil sofa, punishment by yoga, a psychotic virgin, Gideon's drool, coming of elbows, evil sticks, and lots of talk of evil, but very little actual evil.

The cinematographer on this film was Russell Metty.who also filmed Spartacus, Touch of Evil, won an Oscar, filmed 90 other films starting in 1925 and Monster on the Campus. He would work on anything that came his way, and do it right.

Joseph Gershenson was house composer for Universal for 20 years; his scores have been recycled in other films, like "The Mole People", "Kitten with a Whip" and "The Deadly Mantis"--all of which got the MST3K treatment.

I saw this when I was far too young on some late night cable channel (UK) - probably scifi or TCM or something similar in the mid nineties. I was watching alone in the dark. I have no memory of all the other people and the plot as I was scared shitless by the head and never watched more than 30 minutes. But it left an unshakable impression. I could never really lose the dread I felt seeing that disembodied face trying to get back the rest of its body. Throughout the years and from time to time I tried to track it down, I never knew the title. I just knew it was about some beheaded 16th century wizard and a creepy scene involving a dowsing rod. I finally today have traced it, after 25 years. And it's not nearly as creepy as I remember. In fact it's quite dull and cringingly bad. That dark part of my childhood has been replaced with relief. Thank you.

Them singing (especially over soundtracks with no lyrics) is probably my favorite thing ever. I have so many stupid melodies stuck in my mind that I find myself randomly singing. There's not a day where I don't subconsciously hear them singing "Rotor" at least once. 😂

Also the music cue from where they first reveal the head is the monster's theme music from _Creature from the Black Lagoon,_ which they watched the sequel to at the beginning of this season. Also, I'm pretty sure it was in _Women of the Prehistoric Planet_ from season one.
