I remember my first time playing Aurora, it took me 20 hours of setting things up to design my first ship. And then I realized that my laptop's resolution was too small to view the entire game screen so I had to get a program that changed that.

That honestly seems kind of silly. You can see it with pretty much any game that has a modding community, but once it hits critical mass the modding community themselves will be able to support helping anyone who has problems with bugs or just doesn't know how to install mods. A more valid reason would have simply not wanting to devote the development time to programming more in-depth mod support.

Oh god, i sunk to many hours into learning Aurora 4x to barely escape the sol system. Just when i thought i was out you drag me back in! Aurora 4x is going to hopefully end up like dwarf fortress. Where we wait 20+ years for it to become accessible to normies reeeee!!! Thanks for this in advance, i might not finish the whole thing but i truly appreciated the 7:30 hours of F.U.N!

I dabbled with a4x genome stuff a long time before C# version was a thing, so my memory might be a bit blurry on this. I made it a point to populate my solar system with people before venturing forth, so I went hard on terraforming and then biomoded my people to suit their planets post terraform. Then I created Martians, Mercurians, Lunatics, possibly Venutians, and I'm not sure if I used Lunatics on the 2-3 Gas giant moons that's easily terraformable, or made Ioites etc. Then I had fun watching these different populations populate various bodies in other systems. :) I also made it a point to have academies everywhere in SOL, and eventually elsewhere as well, so I could have officers and governors from various planets and genomes. In the end, it was quite satisfying to see SOL having a well developed civilian economy.

I've found that to refit ships when I get new engine tech, it's important that the total hull size of the original and refit ship be the same. I try to do things in multiples of 50 HS or 100 HS rather than just doing the maximum HS available. This is mainly important with Freighters - I have a lot of freighters so being able to refit them rather than scrap and rebuild is a time a resource saver.

I think it's within x% of hull size AND refit cost must only be y% of total build cost I can never remember the numbers though

Sometimes the moons of GG planets are large enough to create Lagrange Points of their own. The end up in the Moon's orbital path, and thus are very near the parent GG. This could be very useful for situations like Minerva in this game.

Anywho, I guess I'll get some idea from watching this, but for anyone who sees this who has played both, how does Aurora compare to Distant worlds 1/2? I played a good bit of DW1 and only a bit of DW2. Obviously the visual aspect is different, but this seems very similar to DW1, what is the benefit to this spreadsheet version? I guess this is more granular than DW, but I guess I'm wondering if that is actually an improvement or not. I look forwards to watching more of this to find out.

Something I've noticed with survey ships on 5-day tics is that they will not survey multiple objects during those 5 days. They'll fly to one and complete the survey, but will only ever do one object every 5 days. When I'm surveying many asteroids in the early game and time is important, I will go down to 1-day tics so that my ships aren't wasting multiple days waiting for a new order cycle.

Maybe someone pointed it out, or maybe it's mentioned a couple more hours in, but regarding the species growth rates... 10% of each species means if you have a thousand humans, you'd get 100. If you have 1000 but with 100 in 10 species then it's still 100, just 10x10 split between each species.

The issue arises because the % growth rate drops as the size of the population increases And 10 100s growing at 20% grow faster than 1000 growing at 10

I'm only up to Chapter 2 so far, so I'm not sure if you discover this and explain it later, but I ran into the same issue as you with regards to the survey ships not being able to "Refuel, Resupply and Overhaul at Colony" and it took some searching to realize what causes it: You have only 5 maintenance facilities, providing a total maintenance capacity of 5000 tons, and the survey ships are larger than that, so there is insufficient maintenance capacity to overhaul them. Need to build more maintenance facilities.

1:01:50 You probably realised it further on in the video but because each 'species' is its own colony then the gene modification will always target that specific species and not touch any of the other 'colony' populations. It also means that when you want to change to modifying a different particular species, you'd need to move the building from one 'colony' to the next. As because as far as Aurora is concerned they're entirely different colony entities, just with a shared owner. The same can happen when you conquer or cohabitate a previously NPR owned world, you end up with your colony on the world, and then the previous NPRs colony as a second entity that you 'own'.

By the way, transferring them from one colony to another might be a useful task for civilian shipping. Just put in demand/supply orders in each 'colony' and civilian shipping should take the job and have it done pretty much immediately once civilian shipping is booming.

Question about Sector governors. I assigned a civilian admin on the commander screen to the sector governor and if I close that window and go back in it says he's assigned to the sector but on the Summary screen it says I have no sector governor. what did i miss???

The level of complexity itself is completely on another scale, not mentioning that the games focus on entirely diffrent aspects of space exploration and management. Also, this is way more of a personal subjective opinion, but terra invicta is a glorified board game (the grognard complicated type of board game though!), instead of being a simulation or a immersive sim game.
