I was nine years old in 1969, and I was fortunate to have built the Frankenstein, Dracula and Wolfman in the "Frightening Lightning" long box. The others I built were all in the square box, but I'm thankful I had the chance to build those as well. Funny story about the Dracula kit. In the summer of 1969, I had helped my then teenage cousins with something, and they took me to Woolworth and let me pick out a model kit for my assistance. I chose the Dracula kit, and as we were leaving, my oldest cousin sagely told me that, "Vampires don't 'glow-in-the-dark.'" Flash forward some half a century, and I bought one of their daughters a figure they wanted of Edward Cullen from "Twilight." I couldn't resist telling her that, "Vampires don't 'sparkle.'" It took her dad a second, but he smiled broadly when he got the reference . . . . Thanks for sharing this! 85th Like.

I had most of these, except those customizing kits, the guillotine, and the Bride of F. ~~ which I never saw before, even though my family ran a "variety store." I got all these, plus all those quarter-ounce jars of Testors model paints, with our "family discount." (The $0.99 models only cost me 66 cents !) Some models I bought twice, when they came out with the glow-in-the-dark versions. I would thin the paints with the turpentine so the parts had a wash of color, but still glowed at night. Also had Batman, Zorro, and the Starship Enterprise. Zorro sat on a horse reared up on its hind legs, and it was difficult to get it glued, it took 2 or 3 tries.

As a kid in the 1970s I had the King Kong model at least 4 times as I would build, then play with until it completely broke and disappeared. The earliest one of mine had the dinner-mint green details and the last one, which was still lingering on the shelf of a discount-variety store just before 1980 had tan details. All of the kits were the glow versions in the square box. I thought that was the only box the kit ever came in, until I saw pictures of the other versions in the late 1990s.

I remember building every one of them growing up. I joined a model builders club. It cost a dime you sent back folded in a card you got in the kit. I also seem to remember a mummy kit of the sarcophagus that had a key in the foot of the sarcophagus. And when you opened it and turned the key the mummy inside turned over and it “came alive “.

Happy memories. My older brother had to make them for me as a child. Great job. Had to replace the 'glow in the dark' pieces as he couldn't get to sleep straightaway with me. 'Tom, Tommy, Tommy, they 're moving Tommmm.' He would have to get up and put them face down. However 'Tom, Tommy, Tommmm' they're still moving Tommmm. Back up again, empty a draw and stash them away. 😂😂

I bought and built all of these models back in the day. At 13 I had a paper route like all the boys of the day. All money went to buying these models. They were expensive at that time. About 7 to15 dollars depending on the kit. Also built WW2 airplanes and tanks. After building the planes, used to take a hot pin and make bullet holes and with black paint make it look like oil was coming out of the holes. They looked really good. But, I guess like most people, moving around they got broken or lost . Heartbreaking 😢. Always got high as a kite from the glue.

I have a re-issue if the Guillotine from a few years ago that used magnets to hold the head in place. You needed to add some lead slugs to the blade carriage so it had enough force to sever the head. I modified mine because two magnets would continue to hold the head in place after the blade went through the neck, the head would just spin 180 degrees and be facing straight up after the blade fell. I left the magnet in the part of the neck on the head and installed a screw into the neck on the body part, the head comes off now every time the blade falls.

In the latter half of the 60's I built the Wolfman, Godzilla, and the Witch. My brush painting skills were lacking, so they didn't look too great. My recent builds of the Atlantis repops are much better. You older folks may remember the Dick Van Dyke tv show from the 1960's. One of the last episodes in the spring of 1966 had scenes in the son Richie's bedroom. He had some monster models including the Guillotine.
