I think it is about abusive relationships (not just romantical relationships!). Maybe people think it's about religion because she uses the word "lord" a few times but other than that it doesn't really fit the rest of the lyrics. "That you never meant for life to hurt for me. Maybe I'll recover if you set me free"; "Why do you keep hunting, like an animal? Maybe it's because you need to own someone." That really does not fit in the context of a loving god/goddess, in which most religious people believe. BUT a common technique in abusive relationships is to isolate the victim from all / most of their other social contacts. Ultimately this leads to the victim not being able to imagine their life without their oppressor. Hence why she calls the person "lord"; because it is an omnipresent person that controls every aspect of their life.

The singing, the chords, the melody, everything seems to scream for freedom. The entire album resonates with me with the familiar feeling of needing to be free, especially this song. It's a wonderful feeling, sometimes agonizing, but it makes me feel alive. When I hear AURORA, I can see a new world, away from the chains of my own mind, everything becomes clearer. When Giving In To The Love came out I was struggling a lot with my friendship with someone. I knew they were a good person, but it felt like too much for me. I thought maybe I should just "give in to their love", and that the feeling will pass. When I decided to end things, I was doubting myself a lot, even tho I finally felt so good. And then this masterpiece came out. "Giving into love should set me free" - it's a bit selfish but I felt like these words were for me. So perfectly comforting and fitting. Not every friendship is meant to last for years or forever. And it's okay.
@uMaud2 жыл бұрын
For a long time, I felt obligated to give my friends all the time, energy, and support they would ask of me. I thought I was the selfish one for feeling like it was a chore, for not being happy to do it. I eventually realised that you simply shouldn't force yourself to do things you don't want to do, or to put up with people you find overwhelming. No matter what people might tell you, no excuse is good enough to stay in a relationship you don't feel happy in. No matter how bad someone's life or mental health is, you have no obligation to keep giving them support. It's not selfish to prioritize your hapiness above your relationships. Said relationships should bring you additional joy in your life, or at the very least, not take some away from you.

This song makes me think more about how the tyranny of the church (mostly back in the day, when they killed more people than they saved, but nowadays there are plenty examples as well) gives a painful and wrong perspective of God, a perspective that hurts people and makes them feel angst and fear instead of making them feel love and hope, which is all God really is. The way some humans destroy(ed) who God is for so many is sad. Especially because it doesn't touch God (though it sure makes Him angry and upset), we could never, but it dreadfully tortures people again and again... it's just painful to see it, even more painful to feel it. This song hits hard when we think about the men who considered (also can apply to nowadays, sure, but it was stronger when the church literally ruled) themselves to be in a higher position than other people. The kings, popes, priests, "powerful" men in general (not that many women as far as I know), who thought God made them superior (based on the material things they posessed or whatever madness was in their minds for them to think that), who thought they owned people and deserved more than them... disgusting.
@Catastrophic_312 жыл бұрын
Stronger back then or not, she is singing for minor individuals who are still alive and not killed already. Being killed is brutal but insecuring and oppressing other's rights is a Silent Violence literally killing the peace and liveliness of a living being everyday unless they are in a free stable shelter.
