I remember my first time going through Aurum Vale. All the other players were had done it before, but I was the healer and didn't know what I was doing, so we wiped a couple times. Coincounter's chest dropped the robe and one of the DPS was just like "OK everyone but healer pass on the loot. Healer, take the robe and put it on". Apparently my ilevel was pretty bad LMAO. I am guilty of not sprinting much if at all as a tank. I learned to do this from dealing with inexperienced healers not being able to keep up and having to wait 5-10 seconds for heals at the end of a pull, usually making me pop invuln to survive. Not sure about others but it happens a lot to me, especially if I run dungeons lvl 70 and under.

Duty 3 really felt like what a Mentor systems should be. New people trying something for the first time, running into some issues and getting help to not have those issues in the future. Odds are both the new tank and their friend will never forget what they had been taught there. Like, you can see the thought process with the first room large pull. Since it felt like someone was trying to explain what they had seen while doing the dungeon in the past. But wasn’t too knowledgeable on what exactly was supposed to happen. Experiences like that really makes me hope that more people stay interested in playing tanks. They aren’t as bad as some people make it out to be, and honestly very enjoyable as you get into the 50+ levels where your kits open up a lot.

@16:40 The spikes are in fact arrows, for this and similar tells. They point (and flow) outward from the center of the line, telling the player to stretch it out. When you get far enough away, it remains as a marker of who the attack's going to happen to, but there's no further action that needs to be taken (aside from the possibility of other players moving out of the way, since most attacks like this will do identical damage to each player they hit; contrast the Towering Oliphaunt's charge that shares its damage among players in the area). That may be a helpful thing to point out to the next group/player that has issues interpreting it!

For Duty 2: The "mistake" of pulling till you hit the wall is something I do often aswell. not because i like to hit the wall but because im often unsure in dungeons I didn't had for a while if there will appear more enemies once i reach a certain point which happens in some dungeons. so hitting the wall ensures im not having one last enemy pack that we have to fight seperate. The few seconds I loose running is nothing compared to the time I would loose in some dungeons to pick off new enemies

@@CaetsuChaijiCh I think if you drag the entire left side of the first room onto the first boss, there will be too many AoEs between the poison puddles that melee DPS won't even able to hit anything. I've never seen anyone pull the trash farther than behind the corner in the boss room. The trash plus the boss is just way too much, lol. There was a time when I didn't use sprint in dungeons, but now it's more like a second nature. But even if I'm a tank and use sprint, I try to look if others are sprinting as well, just so that I don't get ahead too much and pull a pack that I cannot handle without the others. Once again, tanks, keep the dungeon pace suitable for everyone. I don't know why, but I have seen it is quite common for Reapers to use Arcane Circle before pulling the boss, or even mobs. One should never use damage buffs before the fight starts. Language barrier can be an odd thing at times. It is quite common to see players that only talk french in chat, and they don't speak a single word of english. But it does lead me wonder; I'm from Finland myself, how would it look, if I would just chat in Finnish? I have heard, that to the ear of a non-Finn, a Finnish guy talking in finnish is like listening to a baby learning how to speak. Same thing with written language. I have also heard that finnish is the 3rd most difficult language in the world. Good thing english is a mandatory language in schools in Finland. Though I myself learned to talk in english even before I went to school. I even learned to read, when I was 4 years old.

8:58 Like you said you want to stop pulling as soon as possible, but also you usually want to bring the last pull towards you with provoke instead of going to them, with exceptions. The more distance between you and the wall the better. When you have 1 enemy left with just a few HP points (which is standard as almost every pull has 1-3 enemies with more HP than others), you can just kite it to the wall using ranged attacks and it should die right as you get there. This lets you replace the travel time with the already existing ST time. For example, in that Babil run 9:28 as soon as that Roader died the tank should take the Gunner and gun for the wall. Shield Lob + Piercing Talon + DoT and maybe a Swift Cast Dosis should finish it off by the time you get to it. That said, sitting there waiting for them to come to that first platform isn't optimal either. My preferred method for Babil is to take it to that bridge between the two claws. Same thing for the pull after: provoke the last pack from afar, run/plunge into the second, meet in the middle. There's also of course the pro gamer move of slowly inching closer to the wall bit by bit while you're damaging them xD In any case, a truly good tank will know approximately how long until the last enemy dies and time disengaging according to how long it takes the wall to disappear. Best of both worlds. It's also worth noting that saving the travel time for *after* the first pull lets your CDs roll between packs so it's actually also a damage and mit/healing gain in that regards as well, with exceptions of course.
@CaetsuChaijiCh

It's very hard for me to defend wanting tanks to always use sprint on mob pulls, I've had way too many encounters as a healer of the tanks hitting sprint, only hitting the mobs once, and running as they lose agro because they are out of range of their range attack, everyone else is attacking the mobs to whittle them down, and I have to fight to keep myself or the dps alive because they're sprinting off to grab everything and not trying to grab things back. Hell I've had tanks yell at me and leave the dungeon multiple times because I'd pop sprint with them and get agro for using my AoE attacks to get damage in before they stop, just to wipe cause the sprinting tank can't keep agro. It's a gamble if that happens for me, but even being an experienced healer, it still puts fear in me when I have to. Also, with the tone of this video... Might I suggest that you start hiding or shortening the names of your party members for your mentor roulette videos? While I know the community is usually nice, with how things were said, I feel someone would go after these people after watching your video for not doing things right and causing more harm to the community. Course I'm just some random person who also enjoys playing the game so my thoughts are just in the sea with others.

Theory about the Phys Ranged love of Narnia from someone who exhibited the behavior until I learned better from you. One motivation for playing the class is you can (in principle) stay out of harms way by keeping distant. Moreover, most of the ARR dungeons up to... around Meridianum (?) don't have a lot of big party-wide damage from bosses. So up until that point I don't think the game really tells you that Narnia is a bad place, because for the most part if feels like you're mostly avoiding damage and thus not troubling the healer.

I understand you're making this series for educational purposes but... in #10 I respect the reapers choice to tank the tether attack. Tech step was up, and I think it's safe to assume the reaper had dance partner. The clip is not long enough to know for sure that hell's egress/ingress is available at that time meaning we can't assume he could blink out as the cast completed nor would I expect that of a duty finder party. Knowing the difficulty of the dungeon, roughly how much damage the attack does, and how small of a punishment 1 vuln stack is. I would have absolutely done the same had I noticed the Techstep. That being said I probably would have used Arcane crest or at least Feint if I had either available to me in that situation. I'm not going to let the Dancers buffs go to waste running the tether away, especially if I don't have Hell's ingress available. Now if the RPR repeatedly ignored mechanics, that's a different story but in this situation I think they did the optimal thing. The only consequence was the healer used some of their capped resource (arguable unnecessarily), and a single vuln stack. If anything I think you over healed for the situation as the Reaper was not in any immediate danger and a bloodbath (which to be fair we can't assume is available either) could have easily remedied the missing health, the Reaper may have even planned to do so. I suppose I wrote out all of this to say that doing a mechanic in casual content isn't always necessary. In some cases it's actually better to ignore them. Do you critique every crystal tower run ever in the modern game? I bet 50% of your audience wouldn't even know about Amon's bomb attack thing that gives a player a debuff (cleansable) that explodes repeatedly for damage and a knock back. I wouldn't blame them for not knowing about it, I don't even know when I last saw it, and I've never esuna'd it, though I do remember it. Just like that dungeon many of the mechanics in the CT raids can be simply ignored. Also I pray we never meet in Aurum vale, though it would be funny as hell to have you make a video like this about me as I go for high scores in the final boss room. So far my record is 6 stacks on WAR, 5 on SCH.
@CaetsuChaijiCh
@CaetsuChaijiCh Ай бұрын
I mostly pointed out the mechanical mistake because while I can handle it (of course), some healers might not be able to. The reaper essentially ate the hit relying on either the boss dying before it became a problem, or me healing them. My choice of words were perhaps more for comedic effect 🤣 It was essentially an opportunity to bring up how the mechanic actually works, because a lot of players tend to do it wrong (melee or ranged doesn't matter) 😊

I just had 2 consecutive runs of sunken temple with new peeps yesterday morning that went... Interestingly. Context, friend and i are on new alts just unlocking the dungeon, we're at level but have poor gear and I'm healing(friend is dps). First run, new DRK sprints through to pull as much as possible... It goes as expected with an undergeared healer. I hadn't even had time to warn him so i did as soon as i die, he rage quits. We wait a solid 5 minutes to eventually get a solid tank who i warn immediately and they adjust for it. We clear safely. Second run, VERY new tank who hasn't done hall of the novice(should be mandatory!) and didn't know what tank stance is, so i let him know after the first pull. He is pulling small, good safe option. new dps decides tank is having trouble pulling mobs and pulls a second group for us. I ask him to not do that(though i didn't explain why) to which he informs me he's trying to help and "just need(s) to clear this piddly dungeon for a quest"... Not a good sign. We reach first boss and tank and dps both die to doom, no surprise, i wasn't given time to explain(i type slow). We wipe to final sting and "tank buster" style hit from boss(dps was never revived because i had to rez tank twice). We return, tank is on top of doom now and i see a bright future for him. dps, on the other hand, was sleeping while dead and didn't try to learn what killed him, he dies to doom each time. Rest of the dungeon goes okay, though the dps kept pulling the avoidurpois out of place and tank really needs a lesson on enmity and aoes vs single target attacks.

It has gotten better, but that doesn't mean I still don't get why some bosses can oneshot me with seemingly no warning. One example was the clown in I think amdapor keep. He has a move that oneshot anyone who only looks for yellow indicators. If you don't look up from your skill list and the team hp bar, you'll likely die without knowing why

While it does not heal nor give a shield, you can still get toxicon stacks from it I might have a wrong understanding of the class but if you use eukrasian diagnosis on a target which rathalos casts his fireball on, the “shield “ would break and you will get a toxicon stack to cast :D

The tank grabbing stuff, stopping for a bit and making it feel like the pull is completed and I can either put up shields as a healer or start bursting as a DPS.... then moving again. 2. Taking stuff further than it needs to be. It has NO upsides, it's stupid.

It is a weird balancing act, because leaving more than necessary time to run back, while giving more cooldown time is nice, also spends unnecessary time running for longer. On the other hand, dragging the mobs further than needed also delays when everyone can go full blast, which wastes time in the other direction 😅 admittedly this is a bit of an excessive gripe to be more than mildly annoyed about though! 😁

I do a good chunk on mine as DPS. thing about being a good mentor is that you never know how receptive people are to feedback so I usually only give it if its something I can type quickly (dont regen > cure 2 > cure 1, or dont use doton in single target) or truly atrocious play. some things are a bit too complicated to explain wihout writing a novel mid pull. theres also the fact you have to pay real good attention to know in detail what these people are doing. like its easy to notice a healer not dpsing but is harder to tell how they are using their oGCDs for example. what you could do is find someone really good at the game and ask them to come with you to dungeons and give you feedback. this lets them pay attention to you specifically and gives them time to give you a detailed review. its hard to give you too many tips without knowing which job you are playig, as for example astro can do aspected benefic + aspected helios on the tank during pulls and both regens will keep them pretty healthy, but WHM doesnt have access to medica 2 at that level so that tip is useless to them. at the end of the day the most important things are the basics: keep an eye in how fast the tanks health is going down and know for how much your gcd heals for. dont forgot oGCDs and remember a dead mob is one that cant kill the tank.

To defend that Aitiascope tank: Pulling all the way to the wall is a good idea for DPS jobs that can instant AOE (so everyone except BLM and RDM, basically), because you can keep damaging the pack as they move. It's not much, but it's better than walking that distance after the mobs are dead (at which point you're dealing 0 damage). Not to mention there are sometimes hidden trash packs (like the water sprites in Hullbreaker), so if you don't know the dungeon well it's better to be safe. As far as sprinting goes, I tend to avoid sprinting in roulettes, especially if it's a dungeon I know well. I'll exit boss rooms quickly and take good lines around corners out of habit, so I'll often end up far ahead of my healer even without sprint, and I want to make sure they can keep up. It's not optimal, but it's a teachable moment for sprouts and it has saved me a couple wipes. That being said, if I see someone else pop sprint while already at pace with me, then I take it as a sign that they want to speedrun, so I'll pop sprint as well. I don't think this is the reason the Aitiascope tank wasn't sprinting, but you spent so long talking about sprint that I had to retort.
@CaetsuChaijiCh
@CaetsuChaijiCh Ай бұрын
You're right about it sometimes being beneficial, however it is actually true that if you have over a certain latency, your aoe attacks, even as a fully mobile dps job, just... Won't go off, because the game goes "alright you wanna use quick nock... Oh wait the mob is too far away now", and then it fails. It is a very specific issue, but is part of the reason why it can be inconvenient. Add to this, that if your healer is a pure healer, they are also on the list of jobs that can't aoe while you keep moving (and their damage is also significant). For the sprint thing, I stand by that I focused on the defensive properties of sprinting, it isn't about "speedrunning", it is about actually not letting the mobs get free sucker punches on you. If the healer is so far behind that you have to not sprint so they can catch up... Then you should wait with pulling 😅
@hoodiesticks
@hoodiesticks Ай бұрын
@@CaetsuChaijiCh Appreciate the response, and you bring up a good point about the latency. I'm gonna defend myself further regarding sprinting, because it's an argument I've had many times. "You should wait with pulling" This isn't really an option if you're already mid-pull, since that will only make the pull take longer and give the mobs even more free sucker punches against you. And before the pull starts, you have barely any time to figure out if your healer is competent or not. I used to immediately sprint pre-pull in roulettes, and it would often end in a wipe as the healer wasn't ready for it. You could argue this is the healer's fault and not the tank's, but a wipe is a wipe. Sprint does provide some defensive benefits, but if it means spending 10-20 seconds tanking the later packs without a healer (especially at low levels), the trade-off just isn't worth it.
@CaetsuChaijiCh
@CaetsuChaijiCh Ай бұрын
@hoodiesticks I've had to deal with this problem a few times as well, and what I've done in those situations is usually do some tricky things like trying to pull the pack back towards the healer when everything is picked up. But to be fair, usually I use sprint before I enter combat, due to the extended duration. I do think though, that while your argument of a slow running healer is valid, that seems more like the exception than the rule: if your group is found lacking in one way or the other, REGARDLESS of what role YOU are, adjusting to it often leads to a better end result. To me, the slow runner healer is rare, so I don't think of that much 😅
@hoodiesticks

@@CaetsuChaijiCh Maybe it just comes down to group luck, then. I tend to run ARR stuff a lot for zodiac farming, and I'd say there's a 50/50 chance that I get far enough ahead of a sprout while pulling that they end up faded out on the party list (without me sprinting).

In FF14's case, it's not like abilities are limited in availability or must be equipped in finite slots (except BLU), so... with the whole kit available, I have no reason to neglect using things that are useful. Sprint is part of the trash pull "rotation/opener", I as healer main more often sprint with an unsprinting tank than sprinting with a sprinting tank lol If someone tells me not to use something while that something lacks a hindrance, they can kindly f-- off. Clicking are bad players? And what about the first solo healer DSR clear with a freaking legend of a clicking AST? And you mentioned the language barrier. You might also want to advice them to check their DF setting. The default setting is only the game language. Therefore, unless changed manually, the DF of "D" and "F" player will only look for other people who have their language enabled. And these are mostly other German or French players who had the same issue of long queue times until they activated them.

Exactly. That is sort of what I mean, that people make these assumptions, but forget how it isn't all of them 😅 And yes, part of the problem is that the players that don't speak English may have been advised to toggle more language options for faster queues, from someone who doesn't realize that this causes other problems 😅 there is only so much I can do though, since the problem players would not be able to understand me anyway!

I hate to say this but knowing there are players like you watching our every moves to out our mistakes is the reason why tankxiety and stuff exists, I understand reaching for the mentoring but shouldn't it be only in cases with obvious improvements, like the use of mitigations? For example, that sprint bit? Maybe the tank just wanted to wait on the team, maybe he was just chilling and didn't want to rush it, or he was counting on the bard to keep everyone moderately faster and at the same pace
@CaetsuChaijiCh
@CaetsuChaijiCh Ай бұрын
For the sprint bit, peloton does not work in combat, so I direct you back to the reason it matters: You'd want your tank, when pulling big, to use defensive cooldowns right? Sprint reduces the damage taken while running, by outrunning the mobs. So it is a defensive cooldown. So it is the same as mitigation. Sure, it wasn't a major bit deal or issue, but it is an improvement. As to the tankxiety part, I find it highly unlikely people would be reasonably anxious about the explanation I gave, where I highlighted the issue, said it was fine, BUT it technically could be better right?
