It's also interesting, that in newly discovered Gothica Bononiensia it occurred in quotation from Isaiah as 𐌰𐌿𐌶𐌰𐌽𐌳𐌹𐌻 (auzandil), which translates (in that particular case) ἑωσφόρος, which means Lucifer 😮 So, at least from the forth century the star meaning is attested

Great video, thank you for linking this with Aurevandill ❤ Tolkien also appropriates the "Eala Earendel..." phrase with his Quenya equivalent: "Aiya ëarendil elenion ancalima" which Frodo calls out when using the phial of Galadriel. "Hail/behold Earendil, brightest of all stars" And just as a note for those interested, his Elvish "Eärendil" is pronounced a bit differently from the Old English version: if the second-to-last syllable in an elvish word (and elvish-derived words) contains a long vowel or a consonant cluster (in this case -ND-) then the stress falls on that syllable. e - a - REND - il

Fascinating, your knowledge never ceases to amaze. Additionally, if you find the time to make any content discussing the elements of our world's mythology that J.R.R. Tolkien drew from to create his mythos then I and others I know will certainly watch!

Great video. In a few games that I play online if the character is good/affiliated with light/holy etc I often use the name Aurvandill (since its likely available in the game, unlike most others) and everyone asks me if its Sindarin and I have to explain who Tolkien was outside of being an author and why it sounds familiar to them. Now I'll just link them to this video.

For Old English enthusiasts, Old Norse and Tolkien are close to the heart. It's strange if you liked one of those and not the others.

Eärendil was also originally named Earendel before the name changed with the further development of the elvish languages. He figures in some very early Tolkien poems that predate most if not nearly all of his Silmarillion mythology and are some of the earliest records by him when elements of his later legendarium appears. Poems about Earendel the mariner sailing in the skies. Early Tolkien seems to have often mused over such alluring scraps of allusions to lost Anglo-Saxon and wider germanic myths. Earendel is perhaps at the genesis of Silmarillion, even the earliest written story that he was working on during the Great War was of Earendel's parents and his birth.

The OE reference is a translation of the Latin O Antiphons (early monastic liturgy for Advent), which begins, O Oriens. It shows up in our modern hymn "O Come, O Come Emmanuel" as "O come thou Dayspring from on high . . ." Referring to Christ as the "bright and morning star" (Book of Revelation).

I can't remember whether you've done a video on the Gandalf/Oðin connection, its especially clear in the Two Towers when Wormtongue is telling Theoden he needs to get rid of Gandalf, he calls him Stormcrow and elaborates on what he means by that.

Interesting. So the stars may have played a bigger role in the Norse oral tradition than is recorded but it's hard to know.

Arendelle is probably more related to the city of Arendal in Norway. Disney spent some time in Norway doing research for Frozen.

A long time ago, I read a suggestion somewhere that the "toe" may have been a euphemistic substitution for a much more intimate part of Aurvandill's anatomy. Is there any substance to this idea?

Interesting. I would have thought that a goddess of love, say Freya, would have been associated with Venus. I guess that is just a Greo-Roman thing.

@@MrEnaric but that's only an association that came about with the arrival of Christianity and Classical knowledge. Freyja was analogised to Venus by Christian missionaries and the association with the planets ensued.

@@elfarlaur That is an interesting thought, but are there literary sources to it? Orion is associated with both Frigg and Freyja by the Swedish name Friggerokken/Frejarokken (Frigg's or Freyja's distaff. The distaff points to Seidr and is clearly pre-christian. The association between Freyja and Venus is not necessarily a later medieval invention.

In regards to Norse/Viking star-knowledge, it would seem peculiar indeed to me that a sea-faring people _wouldn't_ have a great deal of astronomical knowledge. Navigating by the stars, even in such a cold cloudy place as the North can be, seems to be pretty universal among ancient mariners.
