I think it would be cool if sometime you could cover crusade rules because it's really cool, but I feel it could be a bit confusing to other people. Besides, hardly anybody talks about it, and I think it's really cool, especially with the extra buffs you can get.

They should do that at the end of the Edition at least. I don’t think GW realizes how big of a market there is for people collecting older 40k stuff; making a “start of edition” and “end of edition” books would be great

That happened in 8th ed, at the end of 2019 they release a mini rulebook with the updated rules, but with rumors of a upcoming new edition I think that nobody bought that mini rulebook

Best way I've seen is every piece of terrain has a footprint as hard or soft terrain. If you're in the footprint then the terrain affects you with cover/hull down/fortify. If the terrain is hard terrain and the footprint is between you and the target then it blocks LOS. If it's soft terrain then it doesn't block LOS but provides cover if you're in it.

During the Ruins section, it would have been nice if you expanded on “what gets cover” especially vehicles/monsters that aren’t wholly within, plus the new overhanging bits rule.

Here's a question I see come a lot and no one seems to have a definate answer. Let's say I charge a unit within range of an objective and destroy that unit. My unit is already within range of the objective, so can I move closer to it or not since I am already in range of the objective?

For Conslidate movement after Fight: You may choose if you want to Consolidate or not. If there's an enemy unit within 3", you MUST move towards that unit, moving each model to the closest enemy model and be base-to-base if possible. At the end of your Consolidate, your unit needs to be in Engagement range and in coherency. If there is no enemy unit, you may choose to move towards the closest objective marker. At the end of your Consolidate, you just need to be in range of the objective and in coherency. So my reading is that, if you have a unit already within range of a marker, you can move closer if you wanted to so as long as a model ends closer to the objective marker than before the movement occurreded.

The part that confused me for a long time is that ruin walls don't really matter for visibility, since most of them have windows throughout. So they really only matter for movement blocking, except that infantry, the guys most likely to be in the ruin in the first place, can phase right through the walls. And the ruin itself, even though it's mostly empty space, DOES block visibility.

Some tournaments play with bottom levels always blocked, even tho there are windows. Breaks the immersion of the game but it’s a better game.

Man, 10th Edition has rules that are really fantastic for Competitive play but suuuuuck if you are a narrative player first. I’m glad they fixed the insane mess of 9th, which was bad from a fluff and a competitive perspective both, but they do still feel weird from any perspective other than as a competitive game. Thats why I play Kill Team with friends, and 10th 40k at events.

Love the series! Never quite understood the ground floor windows are closed though. Unless I do not understand the intent, that seems very strong for melee armies like Custodes. Especially, since many popular terrain layouts feature a good amount of ruins as well.

The issue with true line of sight is that most terrain pieces have at least a tiny gap you can see through, so your units that are hiding behind it still get shot from every angle and only get a +1 cover save. So if your opponent has a strong shooting army, they'll just delete your scariest units because you have no way of hiding them.

@@Ducky97743 Well yes, but without true line of sight... how do you ever get shot? I presume you could advance from ruin to ruin with elite infantry and never be a valid target to shoot. I guess that rule does not prevent your infantry from moving and charging through walls?

@@Othilion So here's the perspective of someone who has played for 20 years, and who has seen both variations of this. With full TLOS and GW's terrain design, playing against shooty armies used to kind of feel like you were on an open field with some pretty blocks and trees that fundamentally did very little. This led to some big problems with fire hose/alpha strike shooting armies that could simply remove an opponent's entire army off the board and essentially be impossible to interact with. I remember a few situations where it was like "My exorcist can see you through two windows and this seam in a building, hehe got youuuuu" (Exorcists didn't have indirect fire back then!) and of course my wagon went up in smoke, its occupants now stranded in my deployment zone. With the current rules, on the other hand, coupled with *very* dense terrain, I have seen melee armies do much much better, albeit at the cost of some problematic abstraction and many long range, non indirect guns feeling quite shafted. This isn't helped by the "you must fully be on the terrain's base else your big thing can't shoot" rule, which, due to many ruins' base sizes, means certain larger units like Tyrannofexes, Kill Rigs, and such can almost *never* shoot out of any terrain, as their base will overhang the base of almost every ruin. This, coupled with the "my antenna can shoot the tippy tip of your overly extended claw" rule leads to some misgivings and feelings of unfairness. There's also the "I block your move by standing an inch from the wall" interaction, which was certainly unintended. I don't think GW has ever quite got terrain rules perfect, and even those who've attempted to extrapolate rulesets for it (WTC et al) tend to miss the mark by a significant margin as far as at least some are concerned. The current rules feel very "video game-y" and "esport-y" in a way, but I do ask myself if I'd rather go back to the above example with the exorcist, or uninteractive fire hose armies that sit on their board edge and bowl the opponent off the table with nary a chance to respond. The answer is no, but I hope someone can come up with better. (If you shill OPR at me, I will bite. :P )

I have only played this current edition tbf, but not being able to shoot through a ruins profile already seems to restrict long-ranged shooting quite a bit. With the partially inside ruins rules and restricted movement avenues for vehicles on many popular tournament packs (dense terrain or at least on level with WTC) I find it often quite difficult to align a good long-ranged shot without indirect as you say. Tbh I think my opinion may be biased as I love fielding tanks. But since melee armies (like Custodes, where everything has assault + blade champs for charges) are popular in my meta, I was curious how people found them with this rule as even without it they seem to be fine. But may speak to the skill level of the players I face. I dont know.

​@@OthilionI agree with you fully, as a votann player with short/medium range I spend the first few turns watching melee armies bounce from one magic terrain box to the next, until they're on top of me and ready to charge. The "all ruins are LOS blocking" rules of WTC massively favour melee armies and in my humble opinion the restriction of not being able to shoot thought 2 ruin walls is more than enough cover for them. Especially as most melee armies are also very fast. I recently played a friend's WE army and once he's in a ruin over an objective it's quite easy for him to just sit there knowing I don't have much of a melee threat to charge inside but can't shoot him off it either.

One rule clarification I’d like to have answered, is how do you determine save rolls for leader’s who’s bodyguard unit died? Say I have a leader with a 2++ and bodyguard unit with 6++. If I have one bodyguard left alive with one wound, and two wounds go through, can I choose to do one save at a time so that if the first fails, the second save will be a 2++ on my leader rather than the 6++ of the now dead bodyguard?

Yes that is how it would work. The bodyguard is dead and thus the wound is being allocated to the leader who is now his own unit and thus using their save profile.

"can I choose to do one save at a time" You actually have to do them one at a time, because the 'fast dice rolling' method can only be used when you require the same saving throw against all attacks (see 'Hints and Tips - Fast Dice Rolling' in the 'Battle Round/Making Attacks' section).

I have a pile in question. If I tank shock something to death, can I then pile into another unit within 3 inches of me?

Yes. The two requirements for being eligible to fight are being within engagement range or having made a charge move. Tank shock requires a charge move so once you hit the fight phase you'll be eligible to pile in, fight and consolidate even if that unit dies (assuming each of those is still possible)

Cover is one of the worst implemented rules in my opinion, how it works right now makes AP1 and AP0 to be practically the same thing unless your unit (of course) ignores cover or is in a very unrealistic scenario in wich all dudes in a unit see all the dudes in another unit in a kind of cowboy deadmatch in the middle of nowhere. Just bad design.

10:10 Would units on top of a hill/building normally get BoC, at least to units at ground level, because there will always be some fraction of their base or feet that are obscured?

Even their own diagram the top left explains the model is 'fully visible' with nothing in front compared to the 'visible' marine with the terrain. Then they manage to make it confusing by specifying the diagram bottom right 'One model in this unit is visible...' He looks 'fully visible', not just 'visible'.

oh god the thing about vehicles and monsters getting easy cover remind me of a game i had where my guys were on the top floor of some ruins and because the tank was in front of a small barrier it still was considered benefit of cover despite that it was a full view from a upper angle outside the tiniest bit of barrier

i think a good videoidea is clarification of LOS and range. as the rules state as written, you can only shoot at a model if you can draw LOS and range to. only then you can fire at the unit. this is something that is overlooked ALOT in games. basically makes it so you can be visible but say some intercessors are shooting and your own visible model is at 24.2" for most of the unit then they cant shoot the unit even if the cloest model isat like say 20" but not visible. ill copy paste the first 2 sentences of "select targets" under shooting phase that clarify what i mean. Each time a unit shoots, before any attacks are resolved, you must select the enemy units that will be the targets for all of the ranged weapons you wish its models to make attacks with. Each time you select a target for a model’s ranged weapon, you can only select an enemy unit as the target if at least one model in that unit is both within range of that weapon and visible to that attacking model.

Me and my friends basically just say that for anything that looks like u could shoot through it, then units can stand within 1” of it and be able to shoot in and out, but with +1 to saving throw

so question, if a unit inside terrain is shooting out does the unit outside get cover since your technically shooting thru a wall or is it no cover since they are out in the open?

monsters not being able to move through ruins is baffling to me. I'm pretty sure a carnifex can go through a ruined wall faster and easier than a fire warrior. Might not be a wall there afterwards but the Carnifex isn't gonna slow down much.

​@@desitri2956I appreciate it, seriously. I couldn't find this anywhere in the rules and I can't believe it wasn't addressed. Part of the point of a tank is to shield infantry from enemy fire, so I think that kinda sucks it wasn't incorporated into 40k.

One thing that has people tied in knots right now: for imperial agents who can join all Imperium battle line infantry, say Draxus, could she join units like sword Brethren that can be joined by anyone who joins intercessors? Opinions seems to be very divided. Made even more complicated by custodian guard with pyrithite spears switching their wording to any custodes character that can join guards can join them.

I would personally read that as she couldn’t. I think the key here is the calling out of battle line. If the unit doesn’t have the battle line keyword they shouldn’t be able to join it. Intercessions have the battle line keyword but sword brethren don’t. Likewise for the custodes, it’s a unique data sheet for the guards with melts spears and they lose the battle line keyword.

is the base considered part of the model for a model being obscured? like the whole entire model is behind the building not in it but behind it except for it's base sticking out. thx this happened in my friend's game i was watching the other day

Yo Auspex, could you explain how the Pistol keyword works? If I shoot the Plasma Pistol of a Hellblaster sergeant, would the rest of the unit also have to shoot their pistols? Or is it a model by model basis?

Model by model. Each model either shoots with their pistol(s) or with all their non pistol weapons.

It's model by model. To give a perfect example, I play CSM and when I run a brick of Chosen, I run them with 6 Boltguns (three of those models are also armed with Plasma pistols), and 4 armed with Combi-weapons. Normally when I get them within 12'' of an enemy, I'll shoot the 4 combi weapons, the 3 Plasma pistols, and 3 Boltguns.

Relatively new to the tabletop scene. Question about CONSOLIDATION as me and a friend of mine came across a bit of confusion regarding it. Does it happen no matter what? For example, His unit completely kills one of mine and is able to consolidate base to base towards my other unit, can he choose to not do the consolidation move (as to avoid being potentially wiped?) or is he forced to do it since his unit is eligible?

Pile in and Consolidation are bot oprional. What's not optional is that if you choose to do a consolidate move you have to prioritize the enemy model over the obj. But you can just let yozr unit stand still if u don't want to go into more enemies.

Do the defending units get to consolidate? For example, on my opponents turn he charges, piles in, attacks, consolidate. I fight back, do I get to consolidate as well?

You activated to fight wich means you get to do a pile in move and after fighting you can then consoladate. In short: yes

personally always prefereed the 2nd ed true L0S rules.... ie yes you could thread a shot through 10 windows and a doorway if you could see a target and only shoot the ones you could see, laser pointers were ideal for resolving disputes.

I grasped the LoS and cover rules pretty quickly, but my friends and I have collectively agreed it produces some undesirable edge cases. We tend to houserule it a little on a per match basis. As a guideline: - For infantry/beast models, the weapon doesn't count (such as an arco-flagellant's whip peeking around a corner, or a leaper talon over a wall), but any part of the person themselves do. They much trace line of sight from their head if they have one (no boot shooting under a tank to hit someone). - For vehicles, LoS is traced to the hull and main armament (for tanks only). Greeblies (such as antennae), secondary weapons (sponsons, mounted stubbers, stormbolters, etc), and exposed tracks/tires don't count. We also confirm with each other what does/doesn't count when moving models, at least while some people are learning the game. Our terrain on the other hand is a bit of a homebrewed monstrosity. - I honestly cannot figure out where this came from, but we just roll with it now. Walls that aren't part of any other terrain structure allow line of sight to/from infantry in base to base contact with it, but block it at any other time. - Anything with the vehicle keyword may not use the climb rules, unless the outcome would be funny. For example, baneblade variants are not allowed ignore any walls (regardless of height) while moving, and rhinos cannot drive up the side of a building to park on top, but we did allow a castigator to sit on a Shadowsword it destroyed the round before, just to flex. It's worth noting that none of us play public matches, nor have any interest in the competitive scene. We just dick around with each other as an excuse to show off our favourite models.

Note: Ruins have a caveat stating only Infantry, Beast, and Swarm can climb up onto it by default. The [Fly] ability allows some units outside of these three unit types to also climb onto higher floors in Ruins.

One thing I don't know is that large vehicles like the stompa have guns on their back so do you still shoot with them when facing enemies even though that wouldn't make sense?

correct, because 10th ed LOs doesnt make sense... previous edition to strathammer had vehicle facings... no battle cannons fired from tank treads peeping round a corner

A model can fire any and all of its guns (with a few exceptions) it doen't matter wether your tank has a backfacing sideweapon or if your cool sergeant model has put their weapon away to scout the enemy with magnoculars, they can still use their weapons.

kinda wish it was if the model was in the open it had to be those that got hit first so ap1 was more scary. feel like i rarely get ap1. maybe would encourage more light cover which is my favorite type. im a sucker for barricades

I am glad my friend group house rules this shit because for example 7:15 is one of the dumbest things I have ever seen as well as the "tip of a claw is hiding behind terrain I get cover" just would be insanely aggrevating. Fuck that lmao.

As long as you and your opponent agree on the rules you use for terrain, it's fine. It's something i go over with my opponent before the match.

Important thing to keep in mind is that models that are out of range, or los can die, as long as the shooter has range to unit.. if over half are out of los they get cover

the reason no one understands the LoS system is that 5 or 6 different standards exist. "first floor blocking" is the most confusing unofficial patch that did the most damage to the official rules and enables the most amount of gameplay degeneracy

As someone who bought an army, built it and is now halfway through painting it with full plans to play the table top. I can now say I’ll just be a collector. The rules change every 2 hours and I’m not a fan of that. They are staggered releases between factions and that’s dumb. I bought in at the start of 10th and I thought that a new edition meant they had all the rules set and ready for you know, a new edition! I think it’s just a lazy money grab. So I’ll skip the table top because the rules that I don’t get now, will change by the end of the day.

I get what you're saying, but honestly it really is fun. Just play casually and discuss some quick house rules with your opponent that you agree on beforehand.

I paint and collect way more than I play... usually only about 10 games per edition. So I completely understand where you are coming from... but I've been a collector since 4th.

I think it's about time GW just give the rules to the americans. We'll have the game down to 2 and a half pages of rules in no time. Each match of Warhammer will take around 55 minutes. Hell, we couldn't be doing much worse than GW is doing now.
