My beat friend plays Nids. If you look close at his models, you'll see its a slap dash airbrush jobs. But he picked good colors and they look great in play. They also take contrast paints super well.

The meta comes and goes faster than you can get a model shipped, built and painted. Even if you are the fastest sloppiest painter there is, by the time you get it on the tabletop it’s already been nerfed 3 times and may be time for a buff. I mean some lists like world eaters a few months ago literally got a little under two weeks to compete before they were 💩 on. Some like Necrons can stay S tier for months even a year.

There's even a strong argument that the Emperor should have understood that telling him, "just don't fuck with the Webway, it's not done yet and it's very delicate." was absolutely not enough. That's why I said he did nothing wrong... except for wrecking said Webway... and inadvertently letting a daemon horde into Terra... and failing his Feel No Pain roll against Russ' knee... I’m painting some kill team rn so I still have until I finish painting those to decide but a versatile army originally I thought world eaters and custodes looked pretty cool but I feel like I might get bored with their niche plays styles. I like the way sororitas looks a lot but I keep hearing they’re not a good beginner army but I think I might just pull the trigger on them when I finish painting my kill team stuff

@@korrosiv3 sisters are more or less a chess style trading army. They are frail but you line them up to die and revenge kill your opponent to come out ahead pointswise. For a first army I suggest a well rounded marine equivalent army... that is have a large well rounded range that have equivalents to major units... eldar have wraithlords an equivalent to the dreadnought for example. Space marines, Orks, Craftworld Eldar, Tyranids, Chaos Space Marines all of these can MOSTLY do anything and build heavily in a direction once you know what you like.

A decent 2000 point army can be had for under $600 total for most factions. That said don't buy your army all at once, that's the fastest way to burn yourself out on the hobby side of the game. Start with either a combat patrol or 500 points worth and work up from there.

If there's a good LGS near you it's a lot of fun and a great way to meet people. Big recommendation: pick the Army that you like the look and play style of (and maybe lore too). Do NOT pick an Army based on how strong they currently are. The meta changes all the time.

I think what is really important to consider from an "army rules" perspective is the overall strategic archetype of a faction. Someone that loves gundam but can't stand camping in video games probably shouldn't pick T'au as their main playable faction.

I agree. World Eaters aren't suddenly going to become a gunline army in the next addition. Regardless of army rules/abilities, if you want to play a heavy melee army, World Eaters will also be a safe choice.

@@warnerjohnson7321 Yes, but such a playstyle hasn't always been viable, and there's no guarantee that it will be in the future. Even then, some players might view the positioning phase without the means to engage units meaningfully as more than a speedbump/trade as a "campy" playstyle itself.

i do have to say, the world eaters combat patrol is one of the more useful ones given every solid army list will use every single unit from the box. if you're looking to start world eaters, the combat patrol and a couple boxes of eightbound is the way to go

I chose Knights because of the following reasons: Cheap considering points per € Large models more forgiving to paint Might look nice in a shelf Cool as fuck What I learned since: Painting large models come with other challenges. Only cheap when you actually stop buying them eventually. I dont have a appropiate shelf Need some special case to transport.

My biggest piece of advice is don’t be afraid to course correct if you don’t like what you started with. I started with Dark Angels and while I like them I learned that I don’t really enjoy painting marines very much - I find them a little monotonous. I made the jump to necrons and I’m so much happier now. I still work on my marines but now they’re more like breaks from my necrons and I’m enjoying painting them a lot more.

So one thing I wish I had seen as a bullet point besides price and rules is “difficulty playing”. I know what my armies are like, but a new person window shopping wouldn’t. I love my Thousand Sons, but I cannot recommend them to a new comer unless they’re willing to commit to playing weekly to learn their ins and outs and everything about them. I don’t even play them well because I don’t have time to play like I used to, and I can’t imagine how frustrating it would be for a new person without much time to grasp.

Had a friend who played sons on his second game. Thousand sons aren’t as hard, as people think, even though he did make some mistakes. Something like genestealers are a different story though.

I was thinking of getting back into it, and I have some Tyranids and Eldar. But I think if I do, I’m going to focus on Eldar since they have that codex coming out next year. And I look at Tyranids now and I’m like, “WHAT THE HELL IS THAT THING?!” at every model. Plus I’d have to lop the limbs off half my models properly. But I picked Tyranids because of the cool monsters, and because it was easier to get stared with them. I got a Battle of Macragge starter set, then a Battleforce and two metal Zoanthropes. Then I built from there. But I really wanted to play Eldar because I liked the idea of these last survivors trying to hang on in the grim dark future. Kind of reminds me of Battlestar Galactica, now that I think about it. Plus I really like the look of most of them, the aspect warriors, the harlequins, the grav tanks, the jet bikes, the wraith constructs. I’m just into it. So eventually I gradually built up models until I got about 1500 points of them.

@@ZaZi-Zeta01 Kind of, now that I think about it. I think the Tervigon and maybe the haruspex were new in 5th. But I don’t think I’d ever seen an exocrine, a neurotyrant, a maleceptor, a psycophage, the toxicrene, a few of the new gaunts, or the different lictors. The Tyranofex seems familiar also, maybe it’s from back then too. I remember in 4E I had a Carnifex with a venom canon and barbed strangler for that role, but in 5E you couldn’t have both of those on one Carnifex anymore. Also I’m not sure when they made the biovore bigger, I still have an old medium base one.

People will tell you to get custodes because they’re easy to paint and cheap. This is true for experienced painters however you’ll learn nothing about painting hitting the whole model with a spay can and wash and then try desperately to paint the tiny fine details of the custodes models. You can’t learn to run before walking so you don’t know what steps you’re skipping and how to hide that if you don’t know how to paint. Beyond that their model range is really small, they have very little variety and their vehicles (all vehicles are great for new painters since they have big and well defined details, that don’t get drowned in unoptimally thinned paint), are resin from forge world so very expensive or 20 years old. You’re much better off going with space marines for something generic and easy to paint. Or tau suits, tyranids, demons, craftworlds, necrons. I highly recommend craftworlds because their combat patrol is awesome atm just spray they all a single colour with a spray can, then hit the joints and guns with a few layers of black contrast paint. Maybe a different colour for the heads if you so like. As someone who started with custodes I wish I didn’t bother trying to save money because I ended up just destroying a bunch of brushes using metallic paint when I didn’t know how to load a brush correctly.

Great advice. Particularly about loading the brush. This is incredibly overlooked, and rarely mentioned ! And it’s literally the most important part of painting I’ve found, everything became easier after learning this. Thinning your paints is useless if your brush is drenched or too dry !

Love the lore, the different battlesuits look soooo good and alot of them can shoot in melee thanks to big guns never tire. Then theres montka where your men become rockets thanks to army wide assualt. So fun.

Honestly reading their lore, and seeing their models, I love the Votann, it'll be interesting to see what their codex beings, I've not decided if I'm going to get into 40k yet, but the Votann might be the faction I start with, either them or the eldar. I haven't checked how much a 1k army of Votann costs though, so price might be an issue, my inner tight arse wants to just go custodes cause they're so cheap.

I've already chosen a mix of Space Marines and Imperial Guard, but this should be interesting. I'm planning on converting Solar Auxilia into my IG units, but I heard you mention new Krieg models coming out soon, so I may end up changing my plans. The lore for my chapter involves about 9 out of every 10 aspirants that survive testing being found to be either women or too old for augmentation, sometimes by as much as 2 decades, and joining the chapter as non-augmented infantry and vehicle crew. So my plan is to use a mix of space marines and imperial guard, to hopefully balance out the weaknesses of each faction.

I'm slowly playing different combat patrols to see what I like and I've come to the realisation I like painting models that are easy to dry brush and contrast paint. I like armies that are easy to play and don't have a million different weapon profiles in each unit. Simple is fun for me.

Orks. Most squads except leader all have same weapon. Army rule only matters 1 turn. Tons of variety for play style just due to all their units (though even shooty army will have ok melee). Most paint schemes look good on them because Orks can look good either clean or dirty.

I had a really hard time deciding to be honest and between kill teams and some second hand models I dipped my toes in a number of factions but to be honest I just found salamanders the most fun to paint. I think I would recommend getting a cheap mini of a faction you like and just seeing if you have fun painting them.

After playing Space Marine 2, I got into the lore and started an Ultramarines because I really like the characters and lore. I also really like Adepta Sororitas lore so I'll probably build them next but will eventually build Death Guard and Orcs. I kind of think it might be fun to build ynnari just so Guilliman can hang with his Girl. Ultramarines are probably my favorite but I wouldn't mind building Dark Angels as well. Right now, I have about 1000 points still painting but will probably move into another faction once I hit 2000 points. I just like to have options to play different armies.

This is all that should matter for the tabletop. What faction calls to you, not who has the highest winrate. To be perfectly honest I think chasing balance and competitive rulesets is a fools errand. Not to mention the meta is so ever shifting and changing that even if something is broken we never get time to devise an army list in time to counter it. Many of these powerhouse lists only get a month to stomp tournaments, sometimes a week or two before it’s obsolete. So they stomp, leave, and nobody gets an opportunity to build a list to counter it or for the meta to shift naturally. Not to mention individual players have the capability to dramatically shift win rates and GW nerfs the entire player base because one or two players can change winrates by 15-20% simply by playing the list. Then we have rule changes entirely focused on sales, which is a deplorable tactic in itself. I really think, maybe more so than any other game that faces this exact same problem, that competitive tournament warhammer should be a completely different ruleset and game mode than the casual experience. Not taking your favorite model because it isn’t optimal for a list is a feels bad moment. Sometimes you literally must make a choice between victory, fun or passion. Only choosing victory at the sake of all else seems so wrong to me for this game.

Easy agents fix Grey knight terminators 5-10 Army rule. Dark pact Give them a few tank variants either pred or russ. Fix keywords for more units in each detachment.

I just got a 3d resin printer and honestly, it's the best way to start. You're not gonna be playing competitive, at least for a while, so who cares about tournament legality. If you hate the army, no big deal, the whole thing cost you maybe 80 dollars, and you have all the means to start a new one, until you home in on one you like.

would say take a look at lore and models first, then talk to someone who knows a bit about their rules and models as some are easier to play and some are harder to play, the same with making the models, some are easy to put together and some can be a pain to put together. got 9 different 40k armies (factions) and i can say there are a few i just keep coming back to as i just like the models, lore and playstyle better, but most factions can be played in multiple different ways.

Although I love my Custodes I would not for the life of me recommend them to anyone else after the way GW have decimated them in 10th ed. First reducing movement, especially for dreadnoughts, to 6 inches makes dreads all but unplayable, then removing FNP, fights first and just about any defensive ability available to us, and reducing our leader to a decent damage unit and nothing more. The army is dull to play, and although you do not need many of them you do need FW units, so unless you print them yourself, they are going to be extremely costly... The plastic range is minimal, and it seems GW refuse to add new custodes and/or sisters of silence units. I do not understand why though. Sisters of silence is an obvious way to add various strength level units to custodes opening up for greater variety in ways to play and how custodes works. Instead they have close to the weakest stat line in the game for what is considered an elite unit... Such a missed opportunity

Over the years I have found that most players first, second and possibly more armies are dictated by what appears in the most recent Starter boxes? 🙂 Not because they are the best winners or fighters, but because we are all addicted to the draw of getting dozens of models for a good price 🙂 🙂 only after you have squared those models away and got bored with them (and have the disposable income and room to store them) do you venture out into the brave new world of a non-starter set army? :-) problem with Starter set life is you end up (if not sharing or selling) with an absolute horde of Space Marines? 🙂

This. I jumped in with the Indomitus box, and really didn't want a SM army. I ended up giving the SM army to a friend for his Bday (and to sneakily get him into the game), built and primed. Gotta say, I do love my Necrons, but fell in love with Grey Knights more. So, naturally I've dumped too much into both.

I'm interested in making the Custodes my first tabletop army but their lineup feels incomplete for some reason. No dedicated infantry anti heavies/anti armor like the Space Marine's Hellblaster or Eradicator is the reason? do they actually needed it?

Not all armies have that deep a selection as Marines, so other armies often skew towards a play style. Custodes heavily favor melee and will solve a lot of their issues there (Custodes should be able to melee blend most elite units). But they do have a couple of Forgeworld models that would fix some holes, for shooting that’s the caladius grav-tank, which brings in some ranged anti-tank. Also keep in mind that Custodes can ally in Knights (shooting) and Imperial Agents (cheap infantry and/or secondary monkeys).

@@dinobro4273 The FW models aren’t mass produced plastic, which makes them more expensive. They also have the highest risk of being moved to legends in future editions. It’s why I mentioned allies as other option.

lol-wut? 1ksons is a thinking army? dude it's all in the prep. There's really no thought to spamming doom-bolt twice per turn. It's free mortals that you can use on anything you need dead, and dead now. The only thinking you have happens when your battle is below 1700 points. As that is the cost of your army, exactly 1735 points. Anything above that is filler and doesn't matter.
