I defoliated my red gum a couple of days ago, thinking of this tree of yours! It's looking very good. Such good ramification. Thanks for the videos.

Can you put a small fan blowing air across your phone (away from the tree you are working on) to help cool it down? The spitfire caterpillars I normally see in South Aussie are Sawfly larvae. They are mainly black and bunch together and can spit eucalyptus oil type stuff if you hassle them. Anyway whatever caterpillars you have there need to go as they will strip the tree (or you could leave them there and let them do the defoliation work for you !)

Very nice work on this tree and the advice to defoliate once a year is something I will have to give a try. Thank you for sharing!

I was wondering why you were so afraid of the spitfires, because ‘spitfires’ to me are a type of harmless sawfly larvae. What you have are caterpillars of Limacodidae (cup moths), which also go by the same common name as ‘spitfire,’ but are unrelated to sawflies and quite painful if you brush against them. They have little clusters of stinging hairs that they evert when they’re disturbed which have a venom in them so they hurt! You might see their pupal cases on your trees which look like little gumnuts.

I can't believe how fast your trees grow. My bottle brush trees are about pencil sized trunks and i there like 4 year old now.
