Haha sorry guys I had to film on my iPhone for the quick turnaround!!
So for those who didn't know, an Australian TV broadcaster Channel 9 has recently featured BTS on their show "20 to one", but instead of celebrating their successes, the presenters have decided to "joke about their popularity" by making fun of their native Korean names, and ridiculing their presence in general.
Do you think that's appropriate? Spoiler alert, I've lodged a complaint on this program and you can actually do this here if you want:

Finally this show is being scrutinised. They've gotten away with judgemental and racists comments for many years

My least favorite part of the segment was when they used a clip of Jimin's voice cracking to push their narrative. Jimin used to have really low self esteem about his appearance and voice and has started trying to develop a more positive mindset, but that comment is basically them accusing Jimin of the same things he brings himself down over. At that moment, it just felt like bullying to me. Anyways, I'm happy you decided to speak about this. I really wanted a non fan's point of view on the issue and I'm glad you gave me one.

NeraSomnia Choice I agree with that too - completely unprofessional for a national TV to basically bully a singer by ridiculing his singing skills. As a non fan I think that video was just so wrong on so many levels so I just want to shed some lights on my thoughts around this haha. Thanks for watching! ☺️

There are two main things happening here: 1) hatred for pop music in general. This is pretty universal in western culture, if you look at the jokes about Justin Bieber, or for Disco in the 1970s. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disco_Demolition_Night 2) white male insecurity. In addition to being a pop group, BTS is non-white. And unlike Afroamerican groups, who have at least several decades of establishment as "mainstream", they are the first Asian group to tap into the western market. This obviously upsets many (not all) white males, and they were doing the same thing for jazz, ragtime, hip hop, etc in the past.

@@johnnyd6953 I totally agree. Though there certainly is racist/xenophobia undertones, people like to make fun of pop culture and especially boygroups in general so its not just because they're Korean.

The thing I really dislike whenever I see clips like this one and not specifically this new channel per se is that it downplays ALL of the hard work the boys have put in to reach where they are now. Instead of encouraging new people who might not know anything about the group to try and learn about them along with their music/message this sort of biased media really helps push the idea that they're inconsequential. That's so far from the truth especially when they are breaking language and cultural barriers left, right and sideways.

I’m sorry that you feel that way. Since my video is exploring broader themes like blatant racism in Australian media and offensive stereotypes, it is more focused on the problematic video content itself rather than BTS. With that being said, I did mention that they worked their ass off to get to where they are right now so people should actually celebrate their success for sure.

Gosh.. People always say America is racist but honestly this restored my faith in the U.S.. Almost everyone has no tolerance for racism, and nothing this offensive or xenophobic would be broadcast on our TV because it would kill ratings and is not seen as morally ok. I hope Australia will be able to learn from this situation.. Or at least the TV providers.

Don't you think its time to review broadcast regulation. Any regulation can be reviewed and change for the better, we had black face in the past and now we don't due to the racist nature of the concept. They make it sound as if since they pass the regulation so its ok even though we are questioning their ethics. One more thing which i would like to point out about BTS is that they know their value as an example in the beginning for their first US performance they were told to perform with the chainsmokers but they flat out said no to the idea and told the network its BTS only or forget about the whole thing, I think most of us would say yes to the given opportunity but not them and as an Asian we should learn and know our value so that we don't make the same mistake and play supporting cast. I remember when Bruce Lee started he had to play the role Kato and support green hornet even though he was the star of the show and when he went on his own he was more successful and became a legend.
@JefflesChangy

That’s very well said and I truly agree with that. While they might not break the regulations, they’ve definitely broken the TV code of practice as I checked, so maybe you can also file a complaint using the link I included in the info if you want haha. Yes I think we should know our value and just be confident in our own skin, because at the moment our media is still quite white-dominated. But this shows hard work is what eventually pays off. Thanks for your insights, much appreciated ☺️

How is the guy saying their names sound cool racism?? 😂😂 What is the point with him saying gay?? He was obviously joking in the show Nothing was wrong they were ok to show that No, we’re not undermining them? They (people in the show) were being humorous because that was what the show is about They were actually happy for them if you actually understood the clip And if people seriously got offended by this they need to grow up because life comes with people laughing at you It’s just a fact especially when you are that popular *it happens to everyone*
@JefflesChangy
@JefflesChangy 4 жыл бұрын
I think a lot of the fans below, as well as Asians in general will disagree with what you’ve just said. 1. He obviously has a racist/sarcastic tone to this. Why wouldn’t Western media callout Andrew or James as “cool names”? 2. This goes back to Asian males are seen as more “feminine” in western society. Just because they don’t have the prominent Caucasian features, why does he have to call them “gay”? I think this statement is very unnecessary to be publicly said on national TV. Sorry I really can’t see that the hosts or the producers are actually happy for their achievements. They would’ve presented this segment with other facts instead of mocking them. I agree that life comes with people laughing at you, but if that comes at the expense of one’s culture, this has to be called out.

@JefflesChangy

1. It is racist because they’re basically mocking their culture instead of focusing on their achievements. I’ve touched on this too and what they said is ridiculing their masculinity simply because they’re Asians. Don’t think white artists would be introduced in the manner that Channel 9 did. 2. I didn’t mention anything about Alex Williamson. 3. Racism is wrong on all levels and this has to be called out.

Jeffles Changy 1 I don’t see anything racist with that 2 it says #firealexwilliamson so you did 3 yes I agree but where is the racism
@JefflesChangy
@JefflesChangy 4 жыл бұрын
I assume you’re not POC (correct me if I’m wrong though) and you wouldn’t understand how offensive this segment is - reason behind is that Asians are already underrepresented in Aussie media, and for channel 9 to perpetuate this negative stereotypes among Asian men to create this misconception about Asians in general in our society. Similar example? Trump keeps referring covid as the “Asian virus” through mainstream media - and this actually sticks and leads to numerous hate crimes towards Asians in the western world. We have no control on how people would perceive us especially when the mainstream media/public figures choose to portray us in such a negative light. It is time to learn about your privilege and stop dismissing others experiences. There’s a reason why an overwhelming majority of the comments down here are calling out these hosts for being racist. It’s okay if you don’t understand their struggles, but at least learn and recognise that these problems do exist, and educate yourself on this topic. More importantly, listen and empathise with the experience that others have to go through.
