Gear for Hunting Forests - Part 2 (Clothing)

Just a bit about my clothing when hunting state forests, the focus of my clothing systems is mainly about dealing with temperature management and environment whilst also try to keep it as light weight as possible.

Honestly buying a mountain bike during last lockdown has improved my hunting more than any equipment. I lost 15kg from the exercise now I can hike higher for longer.

I have found running two socks (a thin pair under a medium pair) reduces blisters or the hotspots before blisters occur....something to think about if people struggle with feet issues like I have in the past 👍🏻

I worked as a hard rock miner for many years. My wife changed my life for the better when she bought me a pair of "Pillow Feet" socks. They cost a bit more.... BUT...... TIP ...... Don't go cheap on your feet. Happy feet changed my life.

HTFU ! Chopper would be proud. Good video mate with some great thoughts. I have found a vest very good for keeping your core warm. Some are water repellent as well. Depending where you are and the climate, if your core gets cold, it's all over.

A couple of things I ad are accusat (Long was away from help if you get bitten by a brown snake) Are nd a ferocium rod for weatherproof fire starting. Compass and signal mirror. Aye, state forests-especially high elevation regions like Essington and Vulcan-are very fucken variable in weather. 0.8° C back in December at Dog Rocks NSW (Central Tablelands, 1113 m AMSL)...in summer!

You don't have to book! Just get a gma deer license and you're good to go. Check out the "More to Explore" app. It has all the state hunting areas marked (You still need to check against paper maps) www.gma.vic.gov.au/licencing/apply-for-a-game-licence

Mitchell Burke you definitely still need to book in NSW and must carry written permission at all times while in the state forest you are booked to hunt it. Don’t get caught without it in nsw!

Probably never going to be useful info for Aussie hunters, but on the West Coast Nz I've found this system works a treat. 1.5mm wetsuit leggings both a silk or merino t under a 2.0mm wetsuit top. Almost bullet proof in any wether, ( - in the bush its seldom too hot, protects from the sandflies, super insulating for long sits and zip front opening allows cooling or strip down to the T. On the feet I use 2.0mm wetsuit booties and lace up rubber boots with 6 holes in the soles to let out water. I have a neoprene beanie. Thats it, winter and summer. I carry a lightweight bivvy or a tarp and hammock for overnights as the group is always wet. Id love to hunt in dry warm conditions, but truth is, here your’e always going to get wet.

I got hold of some Surefire Ep3s for $29.95 very good ear piece as they are double flanged which means they have noise cancelling so you can hear talking and staff but you can plug them up to get full noise block. I think they noise reduction rating of 24db.

I believe suppressors are allowed in NSW now. you lucky welshmen hopefully Victoria will follow suit. Ive enjoyed this series on Gear for the hunt. after a few decades in hunting limbo Im finally getting back out into the field, with the hope of getting some local larger game in Central Vic. I have been doing a bit of scouting the last few weeks in my local State Forests with a day pack and some gear to improve my fitness, no gun, just getting to know the landscape and looking for signs of larger animals. My fitness is on the improve. Thanks for the tips on gear, you give good, simple advice and the way you present it is in a no fuss approach. I totally agree with the layers system, less weight is always helpfull especially in rugged terrain. Whats your thoughts on Camo gear? Ive noticed you use some Hi Vis camo, does it still work as camo! Whats your favorite footwear for hunting. I saw you carry a pair of garden clippers for the thick stuff, woild a short machette work as well? Keep the vids coming.

Hey mate, no suppressors are NOT legal for recreational shooters in NSW, blaze Orange with black camo markings can help break up outline more than just solid colours. A Machete would work but it’s not ideal, you need force and to make noise to use it, snippers are subtle and can be used mid stalk when you need them to most, particularly on blackberry

Personally I only take the back pack for multi day trips where I camp out and need to carry a bit more in way of creature comfort. For day trips I use an old military LBV that I got for 30 bucks. Shooter side I have a utility pouch close to my centreline where I keep my phone/GPS/map and compass, and a mag pouch for snacks. Non shooter side I have two grenade pouches, one purposed for ammo and one for a first aid/fire kit. Water wise I have a 2 litre bladder on the back for drinking water and carry a 1 litre canteen on my left hip with the hexi stove and purification pills. Last piece of the puzzle is a butt pack on the rear where I carry jacket/spare socks/game bags and processing kit. I really like having the weight distributed across my torso this way rather than having a backpack. I absolutely love the secateur idea and will incorporate a pair. I use one of those Ridgeline hunting jackets. It's quiet, comfy, waterproof and takes up very little space rolled up. Also a big fan of a mesh shirt over a thermal. Very good option for changing conditions which can become extremely warm when a good jacket is thrown over the top. The added bonus for me is that I get an annual uniform complement at work which includes 100% Merino thermals. I don't wear them at work but you better believe I get a new set every year :D

Apart from the fitness necessary to hunt successfully suppressors are definitely one of the most important health factors in protecting your hearing. Fuck the bureaucracy that legislated them out and made them illegal. Professional roo Shooters culling around the ACT were about to be prosecuted by the police for using them. How else would they be able to perform their duties surrounded by houses and urban areas culling roos at night without disturbing the neighbourhood? Suppressors and appearance laws are the stupidest laws ever passed. End of rant , love your work by the way.👍

Hi mate great series, i i met a guy here in Victoria the other day, he's a vermin/game contractor , he said he's helped other shooters to get their silencer permits . must be a few hurdles to jump over as most things are . but id be curious to know if other states make it similarly easy to obtain for you also, probably something to consider

I spent a little extra and bought Sport Ear ear buds. They are not the greatest but you can keep them in. They have a little 'valve' - press the button & they close, press again and you can hear. I don't use them on the range (not the level of hearing protection I like on the range but ok for bush work). On the subject of legs, good boots ( I have a pair of Cabela's I've had for years) & good quality socks & make sure you carry at least a spare pair. Really does make a difference - nothing worse than socks sliding down in your boots. Agree about suppressors, have discussed this with authorities, but has fallen on deaf ears so far. Lol. Keep up the good work. Might catch you in the forest some time.

You mentioned gators , I suppose you'd have mentioned if you've ever been snake bit or have you had any close shaves with snakes ,do you think gators are more a psychological help , I've been struck at by a couple of blacks near creeks they seem to strike below the knee height but I've never run across tiger or browns in this manner ,also do you take any precautions around camp, thanks ,love your work

Well the gators I have are designed to be snake proof, Moroka30s. But Psychologically yes the have an effect and give you a lot more confidence in the thick stuff. Around camp I just make sure gear and tents are zipped up, I have found a red belly curled up next to my swag once.

Majority of bites occur on the ankle or foot so hiking boots and gaiters will offer you a lot of protection. Black snakes will make you sick, but the venom will struggle to kill a healthy grown man. Brown snakes, while extremely venomous have tiny fangs (3mm) so boots, gators and thick socks are good protection. Most snakes are all bluff - even tiger snakes are reluctant to bite despite the posturing. Venom is costly to make and they don't want to waste it if they can bluff you away with hissing, strikes and flattening the neck. But yeah, if you step on one you might not be so lucky. I always carry a few compression bandages, and carrying a PLB is a good idea as well.

I go solo most of the time. It depends on many factors, your experience, fitness, confidence and where your going. Thats your call to make but I'd suggest starting simple/easy and building up from there.
