Hey Pete, german linguist here (watching and listening to you in Iceland). Regarding the /eeee/ sound, it seems to me, that I hear a slight diphtong, as when you say your name, P/e-i:/t. Am I right?
@AussieEnglishPodcast3 жыл бұрын
Hey Elena! Very cool! I'd love to visit Iceland one day! Yeah, you could be right. I feel the tongue rising at the start of the vowel in "Pete". Interestingly, I feel the tongue lower at the end of the vowel in words like see and free. I guess it depends when the voicing of the vowel begins/ends with respect to the tongue's position. If I start early, you'll get that rising of the tongue making a diphthong, and if I hold late it's as the tongue lowers.

Gday mate , so it all depends on how short or long you pronounce these words that won't get you in trouble, Perfect explaining, Appreciate the help
@AussieEnglishPodcast3 жыл бұрын
That's one part of it. However, the i: vowel sound has the tongue slightly higher in the mouth almost touching the roof of the mouth, whereas the ɪ vowel sound is a little lower though short too.

Thank you for a helpful video! I've been a fan of your channel for 3 years. I'm here just to ask you to make more The Goss episodes, please! A real conversation like The Goss helps me improve my listening skills so much. On top of that, the topic you discussed with your father is so interesting! Many thanks for considering my request 😊

Hehe will do, mate. The main issue currently is because of the Victorian lock down my father and I can't get together to do episodes :( we're waiting for when people are allowed to go to one another's houses again. So more will be coming in the near future :D

@danielacastanoabreu88743 жыл бұрын
You should make more videos about vowels pronunciation, intonation, linking, etc., doing focuses on your lips, tongue, and jaw positions. There is not so much content on KZbin about Australian pronunciation, and that... is a shame! Because of that, there are a lot of people like me that pick American or British accent instead.

Great suggestion, mate :D Are you having trouble with this one at the moment?
@declanzhang23913 жыл бұрын
@@AussieEnglishPodcast Yes. I can't say these words like you do. For instance, "day" you guys pronounce it like a perfect balance between "day" (what I've been taught) and "die". I had an American boyfriend. I guess I picked up a bit American accent somehow. And my partner teases me all the time when any American words come out of my mouth. So I try to learn the Aussie way. The thing is, every single time, I say those I feel like I just say "Good Die"(Good Day). I don't know, maybe not confident. I'm sure that many people have this problem with /ei/ sound. Please sort us out. Thanks
