as an autistic person myself there is no way I can't think of L as autistic hes such a comfort character for me. I barely ever see people like me and people who think like me and act like me, especially represented in the media in an accurate way. not just a nerdy white boy who is rude to people and doesn't feel anything (we do feel stuff by the way, some of us just can't express it). L is quite the stereotypical portrayal, but still, he's accurate. not seeing people like me anywhere is quite lonely. you start to wonder if your wrong for being like you are, if you were a mistake, if you even belong on this earth. but seeing L, his intense interest on detective work, his very strict eating habits, his social awkwardness, and pretty much everything about him made me really really happy. especially cuz he was one of the first blatantly autistic characters I saw growing up also. but there is diff types of autism, some are higher functioning than others. L def has sensory issues (barefeet, food textures/tastes) and social barriers (sympathy, morality too alot of times, hyperfixation) but he doesnt seem to be a robot. I do believe autism doesnt make a person a machine, just makes it hard for other ppl to understand them and for them to communicate. There are times Ryuuzaki seems to genuinely try to put ppl at ease, but L's empathy stems more from logic and rational thought than emotion...example, he rly doesnt feel anything abt detaining light HOWEVER he LOGICALLY AND RATIONALLY KNOWS that mr yagami feels alot about it, which is why he tries to accomodate his feelings into his work. Its the same w aizawa and ukita and the same again when aizawa quit the force. The only time he rly failed to empathize w someone was when light punched him out. I think had ryuuzaki not been depressed he wouldnt have said all those things in front of light and angered him to the point of punching him. Normally L keeps his thoughts to himself

I really liked the end portion about autistic representation!!! especially about the part about implying that non savant autistics are worthless to society. I have a damn near encyclopedic knowledge of entomology, my special interest, despite not getting any formal education on it. but people don't really care bk "eW wHy Do YoU lIkE bUgS" I see L as good representation, partially because he was one of the first characters I media that I recognized as being like me and that was a huge comfort. but I definitely think that, for as diverse as the autism spectrum is, our representation in the media should reflect that. more girls, people of color, older people, romantic and or sexual characters, and more diversity in the traits presented. because there's so many autistic traits and it's a shame people only portray a few of them. low empathy is an autistic trait. so is hyper empathy. no eye contact is a trait of autism. so is intense eye contact. some autistic people are complete loners. some are social butterflies. and people inbetween all of those things. no one autistic person is similar to the rest still, I see L as positive autistic representation even if he's a bit problematic in some ways

L being autistic is 100%, my headcannon is that both L and Light are autistic, Light is just masking really hard, trying to meet societal expectations and serve his family, which creats this great tension in him that causes all the trouble when the note appears. To me the rain scene and "have you ever told the truth even once in your entire life" is exactly about that. Also, L discribing himself as a monster who lies because he doesn't understand human heart or fell hunger or academic strive? That how I would describe myself before I knew I was neurodivergent, should be in DSM5 Anyways, I'm a little bit late to the party of this video, which was 3 years ago, I still wanted to say i liked it!
@elsorzis5692 Жыл бұрын
My history with L is quite special. When i first saw him, i was fascinated. I could not explain why. Maybe it's because he is also considered eccentric (like me) or maybe because he sits like a frog, which reminded me of Toad from X-Men, which is another character i like (i love reptiles and anphibians for some reason), but when i started to make some research about the character, i stumbled upon the theory of L having Aspergers syndrom. I was schocked to see that i related with most of it's symtoms. it turns out i have Aspergers lol. L made me realise i am autistic.

That freakout of him screaming is almost dead on what it feels like to have an autistic meltdown. I know L explains why he sits the way he does, but I'm not sure why he holds things the way he does, like how he holds his phone from the top part and not the whole thing like people normally do. Is that ever explained in the anime?
@scottmon3y3803 жыл бұрын
He does not explain that, but I've heard some people headcanon he does that (and in general moves in an odd way) because he has Dyspraxia, which is common for autistic people. I chose not to mention it in the video because I personally don't know a lot about Dyspraxia and didn't want to say anything I wasn't sure of.

To be honest, I've not watched Death Note but I can say this guy could hold phones like that for... Well, okay, I hold the phones a bit similar to him for these reasons so I thought it could work here. 1. He wants to avoid his face skin to be covered by the cellphone owner's skin marks (this kind of oil in the skin... Something a bit triggering). 2. He's sensitive to sounds. The phone's sounds can be really painful so he holds it at a safe distance, like, "That's a tolerable distance, a tolerable tone". 3. Both reasons. 4. None of them, L being L is L holding phones in L way.

Okay this might sound a bit weird but just hear me out, i personally don’t think of L as an autistic person but he definitely isn’t neuro typical, L is the greatest detective in the world which to my understanding would mean that he is constantly doing interrogations with different suspects, a detectives job in an interrogation is to analyse and observe the suspects body language and emotional behaviour, as an autistic person reading a persons emotions or even just holding eye contact for more than 3 seconds is incredibly difficult, i believe he has Asperger’s which is definitely related to autism , this would explain why he doesn’t have all the symptoms of autism, i also believe he has OCPD and possibly paranoia, but who knows I’m no physiologist.

@@scottmon3y380 The biggest issue with these kinds of videos is people boil down the reasoning behind why these characters seem autistic is characteristics that make that character interesting or unique without falling into a trope, or just being an all around uninteresting character. It all implies that "neuro-typicals" cannot be the way that a character like L Lawliet is without people thinking they are neurodivergent. This sets yet another layer of obnoxious identity politics in the ongoing parasitical phenomena we see as "media representation" Where after autism glorification has come full circle and we end up seeing a lot more of forced into media, it'll cause more bad writing, more tropes, and a general frustrating environment in media where people care about superficial and petty identity politics points like how much of a minority a character is. Neurodivergent characters can be written of course, not saying they shouldn't be, but doesn't it seem counterintuitive to represent an autistic character that you can point out traits that make them autistic? What about those with autism with no visible characteristics of it? Autism is a spectrum, so those affected by it aren't always the same. Furthermore, with that logic, isn't every single character in any story ever made legible to be autistic in someone's headcanon? This form of glorifying a mental condition or disorder or whatever just seems strange. And lately, it hasn't been about representation, it's been about more division in the collective conciousness. Comparing how people with autism are to those who aren't. Why is this even a thing?

@@sleepybosslamb Ouch, sounds like a neurotypical person got really butthurt about someone using actual diagnostic criteria to show L as autistic. Consider the following, there is literally 0 reason for you to be so bothered by this (or to watch a 9+ minute vid about it) unless you are literally just ableist and can't handle autistic representation in media. You then made a massive paragraph full of strawman fallacies - for example, arguing "what about the autistic people that don't show symptoms??" As though that in any way relates to this (oh and btw autistic people who "don't have any visible symptoms" don't exist. Those are autistic people who mask every second they are around you because you are quite obviously not safe to show symptoms around) and "romanticizing mental disorders" which literally isn't even happening here - all for the sake of... what? Trying to make an entire community of autistic people uncomfortable? You didn't disprove a single thing from the video; literally the only thing you did was whine about how you don't want L to be autistic despite him absolutely fitting dx criteria that is actively used to diagnose real people every day. It would honestly be so much less effort to just come out and say "no! I don't want this character to be autistic because I'm ableist" and call it a day bc you did not hide any of your biases sufficiently. For the record, on the subject of the "romanticizing mental disorders" strawman you were arguing with, Autism isn't a mental disorder. It's considered a neurological difference (hence the term NeuroDivergent) and unlike actual mental disorders like depression, anxiety, etc, there is literally nothing wrong or harmful about having autism besides the fact that neurotypical people don't like it and intentionally refuse to allow autistic people to live in the way that would allow them to be both comfortable and productive - that is, by never having to mask the way L doesn't mask. So to act like there's something wrong with autism that means it shouldn't be on a show being represented for some reason is really just yet another extension of your ableism peeking through. Similar to deaf people having a culture and pride in that culture (because there is not anything wrong with being deaf, just different than what you and I live like), there is a similar culture and pride for autistic people. Realistically, people with actual mental disorders like MDD, OCD, GAD, etc would still struggle if they were in a society of just others like them. However, autistic people, blind people, deaf people, ADHDers, etc wouldn't. If a group of people could build a happy, functional society if you removed typical people from it, then the problem is ableism, not an issue caused by the disorder itself. Therefore, there is nothing wrong with being proud of being autistic, and there isn't anything to "romanticize".

@@littlesparkkitten If you're finished with your condescending cope about how backwards it is to overanalyze a character's demeanor to try to find a way to see them as neurodivergent, I want to remind you that the west -- specifically the US in north america, is the only place where this nonsense seems to persist. not only was the concept of L Lawliet as a character never once considered to be autistic in creating him, but the fact that you would frame the points I make with buzzwords like "strawman" is incredibly ironic considering the only defense and argument that even hints to the character showing such signs can just be explained by a demeanor that is generally seen as abnormal. I've met a lot of friends on the spectrum, most will show "symptoms" (how self-depricating to call it that imo but ig thats how people say it) but some's symptoms are not social or seen by people because they are more internal. The whole point about the diversity of these symptoms and how if L was indeed neurotypical, he'd be a stereotype, was to show that people's symptoms are different and that is entirely normal. The fact that you'd go as far as to call me ableist for trying to dismiss the naive and psyop ridden post-modern agendas to make a big deal out of mental disorders or "neuro-divergence", whatever the name may be, because it seems counter-productive to represent them the way people are making them out to be, goes to show the genuine lack of social awareness and the need to seek validation and attention on something most don't care about. If people made less of a deal about redundant nonsense like if a character is divergent or typical, there wouldn't be so much conflict. But videos like this exist, and insufferable weirdos like you exist to divide put people in ultra specific and over-categorized boxes of identity. What's next, what kind of childhood trauma L suffered in his past? is he an INFP or an INTP or whatever? what his zodiac sign is? It's trendy to make trivial bs like this the centerpiece of your personality. and its truly sad to see that there's an "autistic community" that drowns itself in deafening ignorance and isolation the way Ive seen it so far. Is it ableist to think caring this much about neurodivergence or whatever is some psycho crazy behavior? absolutely not. But iIdigress. Please continue to cope, weirdo.

@@littlesparkkitten Also I really love the redditor energy I get from you, please use more buzzwords and keep that tone to as condescendingly offputting as possible! "I'm autistic and I think L is too because I relate to him! 🤓"
